  1. Hi Jason , in your picture the rubber drive member looks very distorted for one recently replaced and also looks as though its under endthrust. is the rear prop slider joint free to move? not siezed or at the end of its travel? If you take the rear prop off to check the slider i'd suggest a run up the road with ctr difflock in to see what change there is.This is ok to do as BM says just bear in mind you'll be in 2wd and there will be clunks from trans cos of slack in the boxs. cheers steveb
  2. 109 IIA station wagon........specifically this one B) 2nd choice early '49 canvas but thats still in resto staight out of the factory has to be 90 TDi for alround ability
  3. Happy trails JPK I hope you are going to keep us posted with stories from your trip as well as as any requests for help. B) Are you travelling on your own or as part of a group? & what is your trip plan?......will you drive back to the UK? enjoy the international Land Rover community. I'm back off to work cheers Steveb
  4. As Western says check swivel preload , also check steering damper as any reduction in damping efficiency can create "steering shimmy" which is what you describe. Worn panhard rod bushs add to it. HTH Steveb
  5. Fantastic Jim, looking forward to sending my cheque. Looking forward to wearing it a whole lot more. Top job. Steveb B)
  6. Hi Pete is away on the Lousacamp Challenge in Portugal but IIRC its a 100a 36v maybe orig off a lorry or coach to run 36v of batteries powering 24v winches overvolted...... . Seems to work ok HTH cheers Steveb
  7. Hi is it 300TDi defender eng in a disco ? smoke/steam from rocker cover immediately on start up suggests blown head gasket.. is it really a "knocking" or more of a banging? How's the water level (300tdi check header tank and at thermostat housing) .They usually idle still if head gasket is gone though. ........however metallic knocking & won't idle suggests cam belt may have slipped a tooth, when was cam belt last done? the grinding noise you mentioned on the way back from sodders also suggests cam belt . with the rocker cover off did all the push rods look straight & all the valve stem caps in place? some food for thought maybe Steveb
  8. can I add a large to my order please.......so thats 2 x XL ,1 x L all together ta B) B) ta very much Steveb
  9. OT slightly but aren't the black clothed morris men to celebrate halloween......was driving thro a local village a couple of years ago at halloween and came across a load of 'em dancing on the road all in black waving flaming torches and banging drums at 10pm ........course could have been something else entirely .......this is suffolk .......mind you i'm a local cheers Steveb`
  10. Yeah put me down for 2 XL ta ......no pay pal a/c so pm me with an address to send a cheque to TIA B) Steveb
  11. Hi Mark , blocked rad like what white 90 said . Have you felt rad tubes when gauge says hot? if its blocked you'll find cooler patchs indicating blocked sections. worth checking the viscous fan coupling altho this time of year its not hot enough to make any difference tbh. cheers Steveb
  12. Ta for the reply ........would have loved to go but was in the middle of an eng apprenticeship......everything I'm doing now is to put myself in the right "place" to do more overlanding . I'd love to do something 2008/9 to celebrate 60yr birthday of our favourite marque so i'll keep at it . I'm sure lots of us would love to hear some of your travel stories so if you have time you'll get my vote. Hey Jim, what prompted your move to SA was it after travels or work initially? Bet you have some tales to tell too eh? cheers Steveb
  13. Hi , Tinley tech are who we use for petrol lpg conversions and also diesel gas injection. The diesel system is in theory capable of reducing fuel cost per mile IF you can resist the temptation to put your foot down IIRC its something like 15% increase in efficiency...... or power. The 300Tdi my brother did at his place felt noticably smoother and more pull on acceleration, can't confirm if they are more economical tho as the company he did the conv. for use it for heavy towing so they were looking for more torque/power anyway . TT are helpful tho if you have more q's HTH Steveb
  14. Hi Jason2, try what orgasmic farmer said make sure its chocked and in neutral & hand brake off, sounds like the rear axle pinion nut may be loose( this takes preload off pinion bearing. I have a friend 20 km east of Ruffec who is a old hand at landies if you need his no ping me. Cheers Steveb B)
  15. Hi Lars, is the castor correction a more recent mod since the lift ? Lots of people here don,t bother with cc for 2" lift which puts the diff end of the prop at more of an angle......if both joints run at an angle this can reduce vibes , also pretty sure the early RRC prop with the open style joint will give more angle of operation and is the same length i think . Finally positive id of fault = take prop off lock ctr diff & try it then . final thought any broken/worn eng/gearbox mounts? hope this helps Steveb
  16. they are glued onto bulkhead aperture on series & onto the flap on 90/110 IIRC you must be close now if you are sorting out potential drafts FF ........mines been on the road 3 yrs after a 3 yr sympathetic historic resto and my door seals are only half done 2 heaters tho so its not cold in the winter. have you got any piccies with the portals ? be good to see some if so Steveb
  17. How are you then Adrian thought i might have seen you at the Ultim*te the other w/e I reckon co driving is pretty full on so well done *lee90* who was driving ? any piccies anywhere? Steveb
  18. Hi Lee sounds like you had a good event this weekend. Was Dom codriving with you? cheers Steveb
  19. Hi Kim how was the winch driven on the Toyota? A line speed of 6-9 m/min should be fine my question is has the winch got reverse? - if not how will you pay out at the end of whatever winch task you may have done? Looks like a nice winch is there a makers plate anywhere? cheers Steveb
  20. Hi diff, thats a lovely evocative shot of the moment. Do you still have the 109? you're travels sound exciting ....some Michelin maps, compass and food/water/spares..no GPS or sat phone. Back in 1983 i " Africa-ised " a 109 Camper for a family (Rover diesel , 3 fuel tanks , roof box HD springs overhaul everything else ) . They had a great trip over 8 months UK to Tammanrasset & Agadez then to Dakar then back to UK. .......mind you 3 months into their trip as the vehicle builder sat back home I did dream of sat radio to reassure me things were ok ..they were i just had no contact for ages.... looking after the son's Asia Rockster now ...he was 6 back then and I would still love to overland in Africa now again lovely photo , any mad stories to tell ? cheers Steveb
  21. No explanation for it but I got 32 on a run from Charente to Calais with my LR (200tdi)...best I get here is 28-30 .Mind you as Al says in GB you're lucky to get an hour at a constant , in France it's a case of how big is your tank = x hours of a constant speed (apart from the looooong hills ) Steveb

    ITV 4

Saw the prog onBBC 2 ....good prog but you could never tell the whole story in an hour. I was 19 when it kicked off & can remember it . Dad's Grandfather signed up and fought in the Boer War and then again for WW1 and was took prisoner in France in 1915 . He spent 3 years in POW camp in the Ardennes. Still got the letter from King George saying welcome home to your home country. Be nice to think one day conflict could be over ....... Steveb
  23. That's abig stack of engineering you have set yourself there dude..what about the TGV 2.8 Tdi? much more power and torque and still relatively simple and LR based. Funny what you said about Ted Simon because when did the trip again (book is out now) he chose ...A R80GS BMW carbs good simple cdi... there may be a clue there B) ....... I could be biased tho I love my 200Tdi and my R80GS as well Good luck with it what ever you build and just as important I hope your travel plan comes together cheers Steveb
  24. So with B + E you are not effected ...cheers Mark90 eased my mind on that one .......life withoot regular new legislation ....unthinkable Steveb
  25. Just wondered if anyone knows anything about an up coming change in towing laws (saw it in a tachograph thread on *RRP when i was lurking t'other day) relating to making all trailers less than tow vehicle wt ...the thread hinted that its proposed for next year......certainly if this is the case things will change for lots of us. BTW hi Mark when are we gonna see you in the essex mud at Bures again? Back to topic I tow lots to pay n play and when i used to trial but then i've always had a trailer and space to keep it safe but its each to thier own I reckon cheers Steveb
