  1. cheers guys - you were all right! the main culprit though was the steering linkage, plenty of WD40 and spray grease after, and all was good again. thanks alot...
  2. hi guys i've noticed my power steering getting worse. first it was just a bit lumpy, now it's got some really stiff spots when u turn the wheel, a bit of a whine coming from the power steering pump (i think!), and when i check the PAS fluid, it's all frothy! i straightened the front steering bar the other day (cos it was properly bent after some abuse) and thought that was the cause, but it wasn't. any ideas?
  3. someone said something about the light on the dash (which never comes on) being a factor?
  4. so it is still charging - just only a bit?
  5. Hi all going on a recent 4x4 excursion, started my disco as normal, went scrabbling round in the usual fashion, stalled after about 1.5 hours, and the battery was too dead to restart! from then on, had to get a tow start everytime i stalled. got home, checked leads, nothing obvious, charged battery, started up, all fine. suspect - alternator. now, as far as voltmeter values go: engine off - 12.70 volts engine on - 12.80 v turn on heated window, lights, blower - slowly drops to 12.30v, but no lower turn off all electric things - slowly climbs to 12.70v engine off - 12.7v ish. obviously a good alternator should be pushing 13.5V+, so what's going on here? is it half knackered? i thought dead was dead! any ideas? Rick
  6. Slindon and Boxgrove definitely - Boxgrove is on this Sunday (10th May) http://www.4x4driving.co.uk/ownersdays.html
  7. come along this Sunday, 10th May - http://www.4x4driving.co.uk/ownersdays.html
  8. it is an 'off roader' after all! and probably one of the best in standard form...
  9. i had water up to the headlights - not a worry! just remember to put your wading plug in! - see topic - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=38715&st=0
  10. nowhere near lincolnshire - but our local place charges £3 a car to go in and park, and make use of the toilets and burger van. i second landman, go and have a go. my disco is bog standard on low tread road tyres, and it goes everywhere, embarrassing plenty of people in modified stuff. just take it at your own pace!
  11. who me? mine's up and running - did you not see my other post?
  12. yeah - wading plug is in! tony - my only thing is you still may have to unscrew it to drain it, but like you say, you should be able to see any stuff in the bend!
  13. yay! did the timing yesterday - and she started on the button! pig of a job getting all the pulleys off, mainly bottom pulley, crankcase off, belt off, clean mud out of everywhere, line up timing marks on crank and cam pulleys, put 9.5mm drill bit in injector pulley at about 11 o'clock, new belt on, new tensioner on, test start, re tension, put it all back together. also junked the aircon rad while we were there - stopped me cleaning out the front of the normal rad, and the aircon never worked anyway!
  14. cheers for the info. so that's still a timing job then? any easy way of doing this?
  15. anyone know the answer to - if i tied a rope round the front and dragged it round the field trying to bump start it, is it likely to clear something that might be blocked, or just knacker it up even more?
  16. thanks all for your responses - much appreciated. also noticed that this topic's been viewed a silly amount of times, so i'm obviously not the only one! need to get my disco running again first - see topic... http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=38715 Rick
  17. quality link - answers all my questions! cheers Chicken Drumsticks - 235/85's it is. not sure what 'endcap trimming' means, or what 'bump stop height' will mean?
  18. what's a good size to go for to give extra height, but not silly wide!
  19. defo not fuel! any way to check the timing without stripping the front?
  20. not sure where the fuel breather are - but found a fuel sediment thing which i cleaned out. one of the pipes going into the lift pump looked a bit iffy so i replaced it with some clear hose, now i can see that as soon as i stop pumping, the fuel drains slowly back. i managed to get fuel pouring out the bleed valve on the filter, the return on the injector pump, and when cranking - spirting out the injectors. fuel still seems to drain back, but it might have always done that! still won't start. ...
  21. crack of the injectors one at a time or all the same time? - and then do i crank it over to see if fuel coming through? how do i check timing without taking the front of the car off?!
  22. now it won't even start! drained the fuel filter, fuel looks good, pumped loads of fresh fuel through... still won't go!
  23. it runs, but it's gutless, and smokes like a pig! hadn't thought about the fuel! someone else said about the timing too - not sure now, where do i start?
  24. Hi all After a spell of 4x4ing at Slindon and getting stuck in a massive puddle, the engine started misfiring so i switched off. after getting pulled out, started up again, the engine cleared the water in the exhaust, but it still misfired. checked the airbox, no sign of mud or water, and the exhaust seems to be running clear, if a little smoky. someone said something about a drain plug, which i had forgotten about, and said it might have got water in the timing and jumped a tooth. any ideas? Rick
