  1. dear all I need your help for the following... I live in Istanbul Turkey and own a 1991 defender 110... It originally had a 2,5 lt 4 cyl petrol engine but I changed the engine in the beginning of last year, the new engine was from a 1998 discovery Series 1, 3,9 lt V8... since then I have been trying to drive her with the same ignition problem which we could not yet found the reason... the engine does not run smoothly, runs very rich and misfires both on petrol and on lpg... litirally all components ( ecu, afm, injectors, distributor, coil, plugs, plug cables, throttle sensor, fuel heat sensor) have been changed and/or replaced but the problem still there... fyg, I do not use lambda (oxygen) sensors... mechanically, there is no problem with the engine... the only thing we have not yet changed or replaced is the "whole wiring set" between engine and ecu, which I am now looking for to buy... can you help me where I can buy new or used one? thanks in advance naci
  2. thank you all... you've been very helpfull
  3. I am glad someboyf finally replied , thanks very much... actually I am still looking for a after market camshaft which is specifically designed for giving such torque at lower revs... hence I am still waiting to hear from the other forum members who has some previous experience of such camshafts with respect to its maker and model of such camshafts... thanks in advance naci
  4. Dear All, I have two 3,9 efi V8's first one is on 1996 Disco 1 with auto box & 1:22 tc gearing - runnng 255/65/16 road tires - having RP4 cam second one is on 110 defender, with ltt 77 manual gearbox & 1:22 tc gearing - running 235/85/16 bfg - having standart cam the only difference I can feel btw those, the disco gets revved a bit more slowly than the defender I am now looking for a camshaft for my defender other than RP4 which would give me some good low range torque... any suggestions please??? thanks and regards naci
  5. hello again thanks once more for the replies, you have been a great help. yesterday I got my new tires of silverstone 35/11,15/15 and my rims ( 8" wide) will arrive tomarrow, so saturday will be a great day... My local mechanic does not recommend me to use auto box + 1,67 tc gears with those rims/tires as he thinks I would not be happy with the cars' acceleration in 1st and 2nd gears... I dont know if you use such expression but he says the car would be "deaf" meaning very "unresponsive" or slow in accelerating... changing differatial gears may be a solution but I can not comment as I have no previous experience... may I have some more comments on this issue please??? my second question is about converting 3,9 efi to 4,6 or to modify it to have more low rev torque... my mechanic says we can use the crank shaft and piston rods of the 4,6 in the 3,9 block and this may help to increase its low range torque... I may also intall rp4 or similar camshaft and some other bits and pieces to achieve my goal... what would you recommend ??? thanks in advance naci
  6. thanks for the replies... sorry for missing info, it is a 110 and its purpose of built is purely offroading... both answers supported my decision to convert to auto... I will also check the option of changing diff gears as I already have detroit no spin in rear and detroit TT in front diff... can you also give little bit mor info regarding oil cooling issue please?
  7. dear all As I mentioned before I recenty overhauled 1991 defender and present setup is as follows: 3,9 V8 petrol engine fitted from a discovery series 1 - 1998 model with cux efi LT77 manual gearbox, left the original gearbox on but modified it to fit the V8 transfer case gears now 1,22 - it was originally 1,67 I am using 235/85/16 tires it has 2" lift with bearmach blue springs +++ I am not entirely happy with the gearbox, it makes funny noises when changing the gears and gearchange is not smooth at all... I am therfore planning to change the gearbox to auto, my zf4hp22 options are either from 3,9 discovery S1 or from RR Clasic I am also planning to change the tire size to 35" - 315/75/16 or equivalent, needless to say will have to put heavy duty axels and shafts etc... opinions please... should I go for auto box option or R380 manual box... I dont mind using either manual or auto, do not care about the economy ( if any) of manual the box compared to the auto box all I am concerned which one will be better with bigger size tires... thanks in advance... naci
  8. dear all, thanks very much for your comments... I think I'll go for 1:22 TC just to see the difference if any...If I like it I'll keep it, if not I!ll go back to 1:41..If I am to change the setup in the future and go for bigger tires upto 35" , hd arms, shafts etc then I may go back to 1:41 or even 1:67 gearing... I m not worried about fuel economy much because I run both my landies on LPG, my disco ( 3,9 V8 efi auto, 29"tyres) consumes about 20-22 lt lpg / 100 km in the city and a bit less on motorways... defender does more or less the same figures as the disco... both cars put a big smile on my face each time I touch the throttle so never mind the rest, life is too short to worry... thanks again an best regards...
  9. hi there... I have been rebuilding my 1991 defender and here are the mods: - engine 3,9 V8 petrol efi from a discovery s1 (old engine was 2,5 L petrol) - gearbox LT77 (kept the old gear box but modified to handle V8) - transfer case ratio changed to 1,41 (old ratio was 1,67) - tires 235/85/16 mud tires on 6,5" standart defender rims here comes my questions: 1) Is there anyone who has a vehicle with similar to mine whom I can exchange experiences with? 2) I am not entirely happy with speed/rpm values... It does 100 km at about 3000 rpm on the 5th gear and I think I can do this at lower rpm if I change tc ratio to 1.22 If I change my tc ratio to 1.22 would my first gears effected very badly? 3) I was also told that if I put bigger tires than 235/85/16 this would help my initial problem and I would not need to change tc ratio.. what is the biggest tires / size I can use? thanks in advance naci doganci istanbul Turkey
