  1. Hi Ralph, Did the transmission brake today followed your instruction and they worked perfectly thanks. I think the cable had stretched by the way as it was a bit longer than the new one. Thanks again James
  2. Thanks Ralph I will give it a go in the morning Cheers James By the way got foot well repair bits from those people you suggested and Dingo croft sorted out the other bits I needed they were very helpful.
  3. Ok thanks for the replies. It may just be a case of further trial and error at least I now know its not worn components. Cheers
  4. Hi, Can anyone offer any helpful advice about a rod activated transmission brake on my 1986 Defender that will not seem to work even after stripping it down cleaning and greasing it before re-assembly. I have got both Haynes manuals restoring and owners but they are vague to say the least when it comes to the rod activated old timers I am just about to change the cable just in case it has stretched! I know it sounds daft but even with maximum tension set at the adjuster the hand brake will not bring the shoes, each of which have plenty of meat left on them to bind on the housing which is bone dry with no oil contamination. I have tightened the adjuster on the back of the housing on the transfer box side which just doesn’t do anything at all! When the cable pulls the rod and moves the central piston that moves the rolling wedges (rollers) and lifts the plungers how much lift is needed, what should I see? How much movement of the plungers? Surely it has to be considerable to secure the vehicle? The hand brake lever pulls as if the cable is snapped but it isn’t as I have checked also I thought that perhaps the components may have worn due to metal against metal wear so I have enclosed images of the items. Any help appreciated Cheers James
  5. No.... I got the same thing the other day.
  6. Hi, After my last panic ridden post re my rusty 90 I feel a bit better having had some words of encouragement from western and having got the repair panel for the foot well and bulkhead outrigger repair sections and new lock cylinders all round. The only job that worries me is the outrigger replacement any body got any sage words of advice before I start? Cheers
  7. Ralph thanks for all the help you are a star it made me feel much better and I could face the family with some degree of confidence….. Best I get to it with angle grinder and welder then. To answer the questions asked by other contributors I am 41 going on 15 but never got the chance to own a landrover until now. My welding would best be described as agricultural but sound even if it does look like a bird produced it from its rear! Thanks once again to every one
  8. Help!!!!!!!! Just bought my first landrover always wanted one even as a kid (ancient defender 90 with 200tdi conversion with 5 months MOT) All was well until it got home and I had a proper look!!!!. The passenger foot well has developed a hole with some poking big enough to put your head through and I have found the some holes in the cross bits that attach to the chassis behind the front wheels. The bulk head from the engine bay seems ok the back ofside rear wheel has oil leaking from the bit in the middle and the handbrake doesn't work it doesn#t have any resistance at all the chap said the cable had snapped. The engine brought us back no problem at about 70mph all the way down the M6 so I think the engine is ok starts first time… no smoke. Does anyone know if the panels are available to weld/repair my old girl and any ideas as to the hand brake and wheel? As you have probably gathered I feel a bit stupid and would appreciate some support/ reassurance/solace/ advice/ all in all please help Desperate of Oxford
