  1. Thanks for all replies, immobiliser or tank gunge i reckon one or other is probably spot on,dont know what immobiliser spider means but sounds interesting, sorry to take so long to reply, i've been totally scunnered now and am finally getting rid of the vehicle to a specialist who has the tools and know how and time to fix whatever it is and i'm off to get a newer model.
  2. Hi folks, i thought my vehicles problems were over but again (after several months of peace ..disaster struck again)the power suddenly failed on my 110 csw whilst towing a horsebox on dual carriageway with nearly disastrous consequences ! with lorries steaming from up behind. I have had the opinions of quite a few people and have never really found the cause. i have had the fuel pump checked.Local LR garage suggest could be faulty wiring ? but they dont deal with vehicles as old as mine ..(1998) local garage doesnt want to know saying he doesnt know much about immobilisers. The mysterious thing is the problem seems to go away as quick as it arrived and things return to normal. Wondered if the immobiliser was faulty but wife was driving this time and says the engine still continued to tick over just no power to pull. Any ideas welcome folks. its a shame because its a nice vehicle otherwise. I dont know if forum regulator will allow this Q but nothing ventured...
  3. thats really a good idea, ..very neat idea, thanks too
  4. You guys !! Are just GREAT !! I think you are right .... as the lower part of the rad is slightly rusted and i ran it towing for 100 miles today in 4th all the way which didn't help fuel consumption but this way i never went to red and got there and back safely (with heart in mouth), even towed for a mile up a 40 degree hill in second without going to red and needle sitting in the middle. I will change the radiator and hopefully get up to 50mph on dual carriageway fifth gear This is why this forum is so GREAT ! pooled knowledge ! Thanks again all you great "replyers"
  5. last few weeks being using my 10 yr old csw 300TDi to tow a horsebox. In all gears there is no problem, however once i go onto dual carriageway and try and engage fifth which it seems to cope with temp needle starts to rise to red , taking fright i move to fourth at roughly same speed and needle drops back down, whenever i try and go back to fifth same thing happens real fast. This is over even ground. Is the L/R not designed for towing in fifth or do i have a useless fan, it may have been recently replaced as i found an old one tossed inside when i got it. (Only bought the machine few months back and little use until now) welcome suggestions.
  6. Thanks for all your advice. I checked the earths rattled the sealed immobiliser box and replaced the blipper battery (which was just about dead0 and so far i have had no more stops...........yet.. waiting with bated breath.... ta to replies
  7. hi there, wonder if anyone has suggestions. I have a 10yr old 110csw defender 300TDi. Very infrequently i experience a total loss of all power forcing me to glide to a halt, my battery warning light remains on. After 20 secs or so perhaps a minute a minute i start up and off we go again. This has proved inconvenient when it happens at traffic lights or last time on a small bridge causing tailbacks !! i was advised a faulty fuel pump to blame and a new one fitted but still happens. Foreman at a landrover garage mooted it might be a faulty immobiliser but his garage doesnt deal with vehicles as old as mine. So no help there. A garage mechnic suggested a low battery in my ignition keyring could be to blame. i checked and it was low so i have replaced but is this true ? I am worried this happens to me on a busy road where I cant glide to a halt easily. Any suggestions ??...anyone ?
  8. Very interesting reading about waxoyl/spirit/zinc etc etc , i've applied it myself and had it applied "properly" at a garage and noticed my chassis continuing to rust and the wax peel away,it seems to encourage water retention where it flakes off, even although chassis scrubbed and deflaked. i have also red leaded one lorry chassis , used oil and soot mixtures, rubberised chip spray, and nothing has worked. I ran out of ideas. I have a new (er) landrover now and have been back reading all the posts on the various treatments and conflicting advice. Finally today I phoned a guy who sprays and has done, does, this stuff for a living and he told me it was all a complete waste of time, rust will still come at the same rate whatever is used and to just give up and accept it , the treatments just hide it. He suggested perhaps use "Shutz" the black sooty stuff to make the underside look pretty at least while it slowly rusts away at the same rate . It appears that a full galvanised chassis is the only expensive answer. I have decided just not to bother now, keep my clothes and face, hair and eyes clean and keep the cash. (Love to hear of any new treatments that might work apart from the ones I mentioned though). I have heard mention of some electronic device you attach to the chassis made in USA that prevents the chemical reaction from happening ???
  9. thank you very helpful, i see them now.
  10. Hi, this may sound odd but I have just bought an 1998 Reg County Estate Station Wagon 110 TD5. I am trying to find a spare wheel cover for the rear door mounted wheel which is a bit rusty. It and the wheels on it (inc tyres) are 30 " diameter. I have been looking for spare wheel covers of this size and seem to have hit a blank, all the 110/ Defender/ Discovery ones I come across on Ebay etc seem to be to fit 26" or thereabouts diameter. One guy even measured his advertised landrover one at 21" across which seems very small. The tyres on mine are 750x16 . I am a bit baffled. is there an explanation for what kind of wheel cover I should be chasing and / or have I bought a vehicle with odd wheels fitted to it. As an aside it seems simple covers with no advertising on them are difficult to find but one chap suggests steaming off the advertising. Anyone tried this ?
  11. Hi, first time using this forum, I have had a 110 for years but have just put deposit with a chap for a 1989 Station Wagon 110Defender. (which was what I always really wanted) It has 12 seats, the V5 (perhaps luckily) is blank where the seating is concerned. Since making deposit I have come across some discussion hinting at a problem in insuring due to high no of seats. It is registered as a disabled passenger vehicle. Am I going to run into trouble insuring ? i passed driving test way back in 1978 so think no problem with the no of passengers I can carry but wonder if insurance companies could get sticky with insuring these multi seated vehicles. I dont want to remove the seats really. If I dont respond dont be offended, just yet getting head round posting etc !
