  1. Thanks for the replys. I don't think timing belt is responsible as it was only changed a few thousand miles ago and made no difference. Not sure about engine mounts but they seem in good condition. Something to think about though. Tappets were adjusted less than 2000 miles ago, but didn't have any effect. Air filter was also changed recently. I'll have a look at intercooler. Just found a couple of other things, after cleaning the pushrods yesterday, one of them seems to have been subject to a lot of heat (the one with the damaged tappet slide. The air filter has a rubber thingy on it (drain) which appears to be open all the time.
  2. I've had my 200Tdi 110 Defender for a couple of years now and it has always had a lot of engine vibration and excessive noise (even for a defender), especially noticeable when idling. There is a bit of white/grey smoke from the exhaust on starting but nothing excesive. There is also a smell of diesel from the exhaust when running. Temp gauge also keeps running at top of gauge, I think this might be an electrickery problem though. It is currently stripped down with the head removed (thought it might be head gasket). Gasket appears to be intact with no cracks or breaks. The head appears to be in good condition but I haven't cleaned it up yet. There is quite a lot of soot in the manifold and cylinders (normal?) The only thing I can find is one of the tappet slides which is very worn and will be replaced. If anyone has any suggestions as to what might be causing this shake I would love to get it sorted as otherwise the engine is sound and pulls well. Also any other jobs that are worth doing whilst head is stripped down.
