  1. Just thinking out loud again, if I was to buy a td5 disco what do I need to do to run it outside the vehicle. I don't have central locking, electric windows or an alarm. So I don't need any of that. I think I have most of a defender td5 loom kicking around but would use either my 200 disco clocks or the ones out of the td5 disco.

  2. Thanks @Daan. But it appears there is a two bearing swivel for 10 spline and for early 24 spline half shafts (pre abs). I'm trying to work out if they are the same and if the cv's are the same too.

  3. Quite the contry if it's hard a diamond stone will be better than a file. They are a replacement for old school oil/wet stones they come in different grades and are usually a lump of steel with diamonds on. eBay link picked at random so you know what I'm talking about.

  4. I've normally had reasonable experiences, however yesterday I had a parcel returned to me for no apparent reason. Now I've got to try to work out why and re send it. The worst bit is it's an eBay item that I didn't want to send but the guy asked if I would so now I'm £10 out of pocket on an item that only sold for £26+p&p.

I used it to scan a replica Roman boat (which was used in Indiana Jones) in order to make a cradle to support it on a motion platform.  It's owners were a bit precious about it and we only had to boat for a couple of days filming.  I went to their yard to scan it - then we had accurate measurements to build the rig & internal structure for lights, camera etc, knowing it would all fit when it arrived at the Studio.  The compound curves of the hull - and that none of the internal beams were particularly straight would have made it near impossible to measure with a tape with the required accuracy!

I do often have to survey structures (quite often boats) and for me, this has been a game changer!

To be fair with you as an operator it's likely to be more accurate in the first place, that and the interpretation of the model into a cover has a lot of room for error.

In the instance of the Roman boat I'd just take a fibreglass splash mould.

  6. We had a boat 3D scanned for a cover at work. I've no idea what they used but as commercial I expect expensive. To be honest it took them as long to scan as the guy with a tape normally does, it cost twice the price and didn't fit. Now I appreciate there's a lot of variables but I guess all I'm saying is at a minimum your going to be checking the scan with a tape at which point you need to question the cost.

  7. The pair I have from the 10 spline axle are which is another reason I'm keen to use them. From spending far to much time on Google it appears there are 3 main part numbers ftc5365 and frc7065 are often listed at the same time so figure they are the same and are listed as defender to 06 and RR/disco non abs. Ftc5105 seems to be defender to 06? and RR/disco with abs. It looks like the only chrome ones are old stock and few and far between. So looks like they'll fit. I'll order some parts and go from there. 🤞

  8. I have a vague recollection that my 10 spline disco (93) was bearing top and bottom. I know our 110 is raliko. So it looks like the swivels are probably the same. I just can't take it apart and have the wrong parts. At around £200 a pop for swivels and £80 for seals gaskets etc the job of replacing a CV gets expensive really quick, so if I can use the 10 spline swivels it safes £400.

  9. I have a late 200 front axle with 24 spline diffs. One of my cv's is on its way out and both swivels are past there best. I also have a pair of earlier 10 spline hub assemblys are the swivels and cv's the same or did they change to top bearing to ralko bushes on the 24 spline?

  10. I used 200tdi disco engine mounts and 300tdi gearbox mounts on the ibex. I picked those for several reasons. The disco mounts are much more compliant than the original defender type (it's much smoother than our 110), they are captive so if I was to roll the engine can't escape, the td5 mounts are quite big and I couldn't make them fit (the chassis had removable td5 mounts). The defender gearbox mounts were better than the 300tdi mounts because they are tucked up nicely but the 300 mounts are more compliant to match the engine, plus the 200 disco gearbox mounts is hideous.

  11. I'm not sure what cover you refer to but there are two versions of the disco/range rover lt77. The main part of the box, shift mech and ratios are near enough the same that it makes little difference. However there is a V8 version and a diesel, they have different bell housings, clutch fork and more importantly input shafts. The diesel input shaft is about 10mm longer and the spigot bush area is a larger diameter. It is not possible to fit a diesel box on a V8 but you can fit a V8 box on a diesel but it needs some mods. The V8 box needs a diesel bell housing and clutch fork assembly. The engine needs a diesel clutch and a special spigot bush that has a larger outside diameter than the V8 spigot bush and a smaller inside diameter than the diesel spigot bush. There is a land rover part no for this spigot bush because it was used in the range rover diesel retro fit kit but it's difficult to find the number let alone the actual part. I have done this conversion but I had a busy made. It's also worth noting that the V8 input shaft doesn't engage in the spigot bush or the clutch fully (but it does work).
