  1. Ok thanks will chech that out! I bought this series 3 under the assumption it had the original 2 1/4 diesel as it was a non runner and the previous owners didnt specify, it came with the perkins and will probably stay with it! If things do go wrong though i will put a 200di lump in it. Cheers, Tom
  2. I assume I will need the same ratio diffs on the front and rear axle? Is it easier or cheaper to change just the diffs or the whole axle? Im quite ignorant about drivetrain/transmission stuff! Cheers
  3. Thats the one, triangular with curved sides. Here are some pictures, it started really quickly today, instead of about 30 seconds of cranking it turned over 3 times and fired. Yippee Ok Phil will remember that for future posts! Cheers
  4. The engine in my 1974 series 3 is a perkins 4.203 it's a restoration project at the moment and i've got until june to finish it. To get up to any decent speed will i need to swap some axles/diffs and install an overdrive? Ive read on some forums about salisbury axles from 109's and rr diffs etc but the posts were confusing and contardicting! I dont know what is on the landy at the moment, where on the boxes would i find gearbox/transfer box/axle/diff codes? Also where on the engine will i find the engine code that will confirm it's a 4.203?? Cheers guys
  5. When you say left and right do you mean as your looking at it or from the drivers seat point of view? As you look at it the exhaust manifold is on the right (and it's blowing on cylinder 4 (nearest bulkhead)), inlet is on the left are these blanking plates oval shaped? And yes there is one for each cylinder. Sounds quite nice for a big old diesel and doesnt smoke anymore now its been running a bit! It cranks over alot before it starts, and the charge light is on, the negative lead has come out of the battery terminal (stuffed half the wire back in tube) would the loose connection cause bad starting and charging?? Downpipe is rusted and blowing also would my local garage be able to fabricate a new one? Cheers
  6. Hi guys, I've been looking at pics of the 2.25 diesel to see if there should be a hose to the heater matrix (in engine bay) and my engine doesnt look like a 2.25... I think it's a perkins because it doesnt rev very highly and takes a while to start (cranks over alot), but always starts in the end, the most common o the forums seem to be 4203 or 4236's. Do they not have glowplugs? I cant see any... Is there any way of identifying what engine i have in my series 111? I will post some photos tomorrow it looks large whatever it is. Cheers guys Tom
  7. Cheers everybody, Ah i though it was a choke! So no wonder it wouldnt start if i was pulling it out lol. Yea when your hold the key the cold start light does come on, and so does the oil pressure light but this goes out when it starts. The charge light is on constantly (alternator not working?) It only smokes at high revs but has only run once since last january so this might have something to do with it! Another thing is that when you put your foot on the accelerator it doesnt come back up! Is there supposed to be a spring or something?? Cheers everybody, Tom
  8. Is between the speedo and the other dials? I thought that knob was to reset the trip milage thingy but havent tried it whilst running because the alternator isnt charging the battery and it has gone flat... How do i preheat the glowplugs? Cant find any button etc but there is a hole (top right of dash between dials and switches) but none of the lights work so might a fuse have blown i've heard each fuse is connected to more than one circuit. Another thing is that when you put your foot on the accelerator it doesnt come back up! Is there suposed to be a spring or something?? Cheers, Tom
  9. Hello everybody! I bought a 1974 series 3 88" 2 1/4 deisel last week and just got it started yesterday (first time running since april aparently). There are a few issues though, first it doesnt stop when you remove the key so would this be stop solenoid on pump? Or is there a button etc that stops the engine? And it took ages to start so suspect glow plugs (am buying a set of deiselglow parallel ones). Loads of blue smoke on start up but dissapeared after 2 minutes, and its leaking deisel on the injector nearest bulkhead (where there are two nuts and a threaded bit-will tighten nuts and see what happens!). Cheers, Tom
