  1. Hope this might help some other poor puzzled owner at some point. I posted a question a while ago when I had a problem with the heater fan suddenly starting at high speed even when the switch was off. I could hear arcing and assumed at first that damp was getting at the back of the switch. I removed the radio to feel the back but it was quite dry so I took out the pollen filter so I could feel the matrix for any damp. Still all ok. After much head scratching and almost at the point of taking the car to a main dealer, I took the radio out again to try and see any visible wiring as the arcing sound seemed to come from there. At the back of the cavity a bunch of wires marked heater was tucked behind a steel tab with a hole which is a guide for a lug on the back of the radio. This tab has a sharp back edge, and over the 5 years since the wires were put there during manufacture, one had finally rubbed through the plastic and was shorting on the tab! Job done, but what would a main dealer have charged me?!
  2. Hi Thanks for that. Thought maybe it was a leak in the heater unit itself so this morning I have taken out the pollen filter and I can feel it is damp up inside the unit. Looks like the arcing is at the fan motor rather than the switch. Will have to remove the whole unit to find out where the leak is. Perhaps the heater radiator has gone again, after all it has been at least a year since a Land Rover main dealer replaced it!
  3. My wifes '03 Freelander TD4 has developed an annoying habit. With the engine hot, an arcing sound can be heard and the heater fan will suddenly start to run at high speed. This happens when the A/C is switched off and with the fan switch in any position including off. Almost sounds as though there is a small leak in the system which is somehow making the back of the switch damp but I haven't investigated. Coolant level doesn't seem to drop appreciably though. It did have a new heater maitrix about a year ago as it was leaking but this latest fault has only just arisen. Any ideas gladly received.
