  1. Welcome back, .... way back in my early days here I was hooked on your plans for an OM606 build, .... got me started on bigger projects really, (although my transplant plans have morphed a bit since then).
  2. My old 110 (should never have sold it!) worked hard off road towing usually overloaded trailer or sawmill. It had Detroits front and rear they were great. Do I think you'll benefit? Probably not. Best ever tip for France and Spain is make sure it is all in good order before you go and carry a few choice spares with you. Spares availability is slow and expensive. If you want insurance then bang for buck the winch is hard to beat as Stephen has said, particularly with some stakes or a ground anchor.
  3. I guess plod's standpoint is understandable, but you would have thought proof of ID and home address would be sufficient, coupled with a limit of 1 per 12months or so.
  4. No surprise the answer is '... it depends', I need to get the codes from the cats themselves, no problem really but I'll have to stick it on the ramp. I had hoped that I would get some interest in the engine while it could still be heard running, But most callers seem interested in the potential of the cats. (Or more acurately potentially getting them for next to nothing). I think I'll video the engine and stick it on a pallet, get the codes sell the cats or the downpipe and make a start on sifting out the bits I need.
  5. Just WhatsApp'ed my neighbour, she works for the local dismantlers, I'll post when I hear.
  6. I have just advertised for breaking the Discovery V8 I bought from Simon_CSK and one of the first enquiries is about the cats from the exhaust. Now I have seen them featured on the news etc. but when I check the new price of a V8 front pipe it is over £1000 at Paddocks, ... has the world gone crazy !
  7. Doesn't look good, .............some good info on this THREAD , particularly post #13 and #18 by Ashcrofts about the boxes, but the 061 isn'tt going to swap into the 065 slot without surgery. This other thread is about a diesel but illustrates the physical differences. The larger TC will have a lower stall speed and enables you to make better use of torque at low revs, probably mainly noticeable if you do a fair bit of towing.
  8. A little update, just in case anyone else has the same sort of issue. I read somewhere on another forum which I haven't found again yet an explanation of how a MAF issue can cause a similar symptom; I had kind of assumed that it would simply adopt the default fuel map and not cause fuel starvation, but apparently it is a possibility. Anyhow, just back from N.E. Scotland,. had the 'hiccup' 5 times on the road up before Christmas. The RR sat unused for the duration but just before coming back yesterday I took the MAF unit out, hosed it out with brake cleaner and then electrical contact cleaner and stuck it back in..... result..... absolutely faultless on the way home, 450 miles! Now I know it isn't necessarily conclusive but given the weather yesterday I was really pleased about that!
  9. Everything is pretty dry and air tight, with the engine out, everything was cleaned and new gaskets/washers etc. I have checked fuel flow with a full tank, and when it drains down a bit I will check it again. My thoughts at the moment are 1) an intermittant fault on the in tank supply pump made worse by low fuel level. or 2) some piece of dirt or debris stuck in the FIP which for some reason moves occasionally? It doesn't 'miss' on one or two cylinders it seems to completely lose pressure and die.
  10. .. 4wd, diff locks and low box?
  11. I know the heavies aren't what is required, but this does seem good value, bit like a Mog without the portals.... Merc 917
  12. In brief my P38 is now running (mostly) very well on a replacement engine with about 120k on it. Engine was in a few days before a big trip to the Isle of Mull, and it performed faultlessly until the way home when it stuttered and died, Nanocom showed a fuelling issue fault logged, it started straight away and appeared to run well so we continued. All in all it happened a handful of times on the remainder of the journey.... not always bringing us to a stop, mostly it cleared and picked up again. I put it down to dirty fuel, put some Redex in the system and changed the new filter for a clean one. Since then it happened only a couple of times on local runs and I subsequently did a trip to Stonehaven near Aberdeen without any trouble at all. Cured I thought........... no! Happened again yesterday and today, yesterday I was down to 1/4 tank (hoping the price would go down!) but now I have filled up and it still happened. In tank sender/pump unit isn't that old... filter is very fresh.... am I just being unlucky with diesel or does it indicate some other problem? Any thoughts or previous experience of similar appreciated.
  13. ... very, ... we were promised a few flakes this morning but it is little more than low cloud. I do wonder if LR owners generally are the ones that never quite lose that youthful pleasure in simple things.
  14. That cheap stopgap Transit still going strong?, must be a couple of years now
  15. Agree totally,... any bigger than a 109/110 or a troopy and it gets out of hand. A ground anchor and sweat should be all that's required?
  16. Recommend the LR TIME video recently appeared in the viseo section, he explains the difficulty is in stuff that goes over the back of the engine with little or no space to work....... he managed, but clearly it's a pain and he learned a lot and would do it slightly differently a second time.
  17. Alternative energy plans seem to be the order of the week,... I don't recognise it but I look forward to the thread
  18. He has some interesting stuff on LR3/D3 and more recently D4,.. I quite like his sense of humour. The DIY lineboring was impressive, I just wonder how good that crank will be, .. have to wait till next week.
  19. Done Deal is kind of our Gumtree, Ebay has never really taken off here and ebay.ie is not really useful, mostly UK stuff that now has all the uncertainty of duty and maybe never delivery. The only thing is that the market is small and there are some price expectations and anomalies that can surprise!. Also the local definition of 'Mint' is not what you might imagine
  20. We did wonder! have a search online, there are sites where you can find the RAVE files, I get the PDF version for my RR from Here, but I don't know if what you are looking for is there. (I know the RR box is similar, not sure what the differences are though) Bear in mind that the RAVE system works on an older Windows operating system , there is a recent thread on the subject on here somewhere, you need to right click and change the settings when you do find a likely suspect. For some reason I can't get that to work, hence my use of the PDF's but for what I need it is just as easy.
  21. Or somewhat more affordably This, just take the ferry to France instead of the direct route?
  22. Harry's view was interesting. I came away with an impression of the frightening level of complexity of the 'modern' vehicle, a lot of which I consider rediculous eg the powered armrest. And Harry doesn't seem to be bothered by the potential for failure, (I suppose he does have a barn full of options) . In the modern sense of reducing/recycling it is difficult to see how this vehicle can fit into the Range Rover enthusiast market down the line, irrespective of it's price point at that time isn't it going to be on a different planet for DIY /cost effective repairs?
  23. Welcome to the forum, .... a quick look at the John Craddock website suggests that at least two of the pipes are, .. perhaps try and explain a bit more about your problem and maybe post a pic or two and you might get a bit more specific help
