don't buy any petrol freelander, better safe than sorry. Td4s are best for performance but are more expensive and less reliable than the older cheaper L-series rover engine.
If you recently bought it from a dealer then its their duty to fix it or take it back and give you a refund.
Personnally if it is serious then I'd try and get a refund and buy an L-series diesel.
When i turn on full lock the entire vcu housing rotates with the drive shafts. This causes banging and juddering noises.
I discovered this by painting a mark on the vcu and driving in a straight line, the mark didn't move. I then turned full lock drove round in a circle, heard the banging, the mark on the vcu had moved. I haven't solved it , i just live with it.
The td4 has much better performance than the L-series, but the L-series parts are cheaper and it is a solid reliable engine. Both are pigs to work on if you are into diy. The td4 is made by BMW and the L-series is a Rover engine.
Definately do not buy a petrol no matter how cheap or good it looks, they are disasters waiting to happen.
I wouldn't buy a second-hand petrol freelander, its not worth the risk of the head gasket failing. You will just loose your money. Buy a diesel. The 2 litre L-series is bomb proof and cheap, its just slow. I have a diesel comercial freelander and its great fun.
