  1. cheers tonk this was done a recent service by local rover specialist. It still when given some real stick loses power and blows smoke like a trooper back right off the power and she returns to normal? Any ideas what could this be? (i did post a similar query a few months ago but the garage indicated nothing they could find was wrong!!
  2. whoops just realized topic had 2nd page!! Yes its had a redex fix but not with this tankfull. Is it worth continuing for a while then and for how long?
  3. Thanks all for tips so far..........just a note to Tonks comments to give a good thrashing I did this a recently and under load the smoke cloud was visible from space! The point my mate was making is these old desiels work better when pushed very hard ie short shifting etc rather than driving like a modern revvy job?
  4. Thanks tried that a the smoke cloud was visible from space!
  5. to be fair to all I am going to stick with her and see how we get on - geeting some manuals is good suggestion, however can anybody suggets where to get original handbooks for the vehicle (1979)? If nothing else the roof rack has collected 3 pheasants recently on its travels for the pot! ps engineer type bloke in pub yesterday suggested best way to run the NA back in after years of little use is to borrow a trailer and drive round for a week with 3 tons on bricks on it!! ie load the engine up does this make sense??
  6. dog transport however various posts from all over this site wet the appetite for more serious off road action!
  7. the 90 route has crossed my mind more than once.........and thanks jon but zero mechanical experience other than a cheque book!! The vehicle has just had a full service/ check over and apparently a new rear crossmember required before next mot other than that the report was good. Thanks for the seat offer bit far from W Sussex though!
  8. Could i borrow your various experiences to ask what is a "wish list" of improvements to my SWB 2.25NAD for general use/ greenlanes. Seems bog standard at the mo (apart from still serious smoking when in top over 45mph dispite local service!). parabolics seem to be mentioned a lot plus polybushes! Any suggestions appreciated.
  9. Thanks for all the comments Ill update this post with what actually is wrong in the end! Food for thought though Richard
  10. yep it drove without any probs althougth to fair have not run it again just in case!!
  11. it drove home fine no noises nothing but i took it very gently! Interesting to note re engine upgrades though does anyone have an idea what to buget for a swap to a 2.5na?
  12. oh does not sound good. There is a LR place in Nyewood near me so ill get it into them. In light of what you Bill if this does prove serious any idea what options I have ie change engine or spend money getting this one running? Richard
  13. could anybody offer some general advice? My first Land Rover a series 3 1979 SWB purchased recently drives well and seems to have the orginal 2 1/4 NAD engine with overdrive installed. I have checked all the levels etc which is about as far a my mechnical knowledge goes. speedo says 34k Its been driving fine and went through an MOT without a hitch. On a trip yesterday at 45mph or so the engine made some very strange noises, lost power and began to misfire. Grey/ black blew from the exhaust. I pulled over a stopped the engine but 5 mins later it drove the 3 miles or so home slowly fine. Question a really does anyone have a clue what this might be a 2nd what is the longevity like of these NAD engines. All the LR mags say avoid them!! Richard Jones
