  1. Cheers Rob, i do have a 110 parts manual that lists the numbers as previously mentioned. However when i went to craddox they said they've been changed and are now ALR ???? (can't remember) The 110 side frames are quite a big item and also includes the angled piece that goes upto the waist line. Worst part was when i went round their yard there was an identical (but newer) colour 110 in for salvage and i saw them moving it round the yard with a forklift and straps, totally knackering the side frames which were in pristine nick beforehand. Grrrrrrrrrrr, They said they just can't get hold of them and they've been on back order for six months or more ! Thanks Chris
  2. Thanks Rob, Looks like my best bet is a salvage company. Anyone know if the later defenders (Td5) have have different side frames? Mine is a '91 200 Tdi 110, the side frames have all but rotted off. Getting stuff galvanised shouldn't be a problem and i'll probably get a bulkhead done at the same time (after it's been modified like above posts, cheers guys). Chris
  3. Sorry to hijack the thread, Nobber where did you get your side frames from? John Craddocks have had my back order for 6 months now! Also did you have them galvanised yourself and were your part numbers MWC 3337/3336. Cheers Chris
  4. Used to be standard fitment on large radial engines only back then it was a water/meth mixture, the power increases were huge and allowed higher boost pressures for a given operating temperature. Mind you the ones i worked with were 54 litre engines fitted with two stage superchargers and the boost kick from a wet take off was awesome (allowed something like an extra 6 " manifold pressure from the same air/fuel mix) without engine damage. Don't know how much you'd squeeze from a 200tdi but an interesting project. Chris
  5. Thanks for the walkthrough boys, looks like i got a busy weekend ahead of me ! Cheers Chris
  6. Anyone have a link or offer advice regarding replacement of the rear crossmember on a 110 Defender? Mine is shot and hoped to get some insight regarding your replacement if you've done one. How long did it take, is it easier with rear floor out and fuel tank off , any pitfalls etc etc? Any advice would be appreciated, i tried the tech archive and didn't find anything (unless i fooked the search up) i'll try to take photo's and do a write up if it would help anyone else. Thanks guys Chris
  7. This is what the DVLA says about this topic. Vehicles that have been rebuilt using a mix of new or used parts In order to retain the original registration mark: cars and car-derived vans must use: The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt). And two other major components from the original vehicle - ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine. If a second-hand chassis or monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must pass a an enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA) or single vehicle approval (SVA) test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated. All well and good but if you bought a decent original vehicle to start with, what's stopping you other than your conscience, from replacing major components over time as happens normally when a vehicle ages? I mean a lot of our Landies have all had engine transplants, replacement galvanised chassis', different gearboxes, axles, parabolics etc, and i don't believe the owners tell the DVLA anything? (other than engine number changes i suppose) . Chris
  8. Who's got the most up to date tax free Landy? What do you reckon is the best vehicle you can build and still be able to keep it's tax exempt status? I think we're all going to get a proper hammering come next budget day and was wondering how i can keep driving big Landies without giving hundreds and hundreds of pounds to the robbing government. How about a 1972 Series 3 with Tdi engine, Defender interior and bulkhead and parabolic springs, or could you cut off the spring hangers and fit coils and mounts without losing too many points. How much further can you go or what would you build? All comments/ideas welcome folks. Cheers Chris
  9. Thanks very much guys, i didn't realise those two actually sold engine parts i always assumed they just refurbished them. I had a recon box fitted by L.E.G.S, very good box but they did dent my chassis with a spreader jack while removing the gearbox crossmember. Didn't notice for a few months and then i probably had no LEGS to stand on (pardon the pun). Ho hum, i'm putting a galv chassis on it in a few months anyway as part of a ground up re-build. I'll no doubt be on here a lot during the build. Cheers Chris
  10. Right lads, if i were to re-build my 200tdi engine where (other than main dealer) can i get genuine LR parts from ? Depending on what needs replacing when i strip it down i may need quite a few bits and would rather replace with good reliable parts than after market stuff. Any contacts/info much appreciated. Cheers Chris
  11. Why , thank you chaps . Now that the first bold move is out of the way, i'll make myself right at home ! Cheers Chris
  12. Very sorry chaps, i only realised today that i've been registered on this forum for a few months now, and never got round to saying hello ! Great forum from what i've read so far, (been browsing old and new topics for ages). I have a 200 tdi 110 CSW with one or two mods and a split personality, also a TD5 90 (well behaved for now) and finally a Series 2a lwb safari. I will do my best to join in forthwith. Cheers Chris
