  1. HI all I have an LT77 and an R380 sitting around and I was going to do a rebuild on one of them to replace the one in my Disco. I have been told that the R380 is a smoother gearbox but I have also been told that the LT77 is a more robust box. Basically the output shaft in my Disco is worn out so I want to replace it. The spare LT77 I have is also worn out but not quite as bad, and the R380 has a selector issue where is is very hard to get it into reverse, first or second. So which one would you advise that I rebuild/repair? I think I am leaning towards the R380 but only because of watching 'A 4x4 is born'.
  2. Yeah, this is one of the reasons why I seem to keep thinking about a 110. Practical, robust, simple and they are good fun. Don't suppose anyone wants to swap a 110 for my Disco?
  3. When you say thread sealant, do you mean threadlock or something else? Although a lot of these bolts were dry they didn't have any threadlock evident on them. I will put copper grease on the shafts and threadlock on the, er, threads and although I don't intend to do this job again I like the idea that I have done it right. I hate bodge jobs.
  4. Yeah, that is what I mean. It's not in my pack of gaskets. And according to the guide from white90 it is prone to leakage. I have one coming now anyway.
  5. Hi all. I have just removed the timing chest from my 200Tdi and I am about to refit it. Should I copper grease the bolts or just put them in dry? I see that some had threadlock on, that is an obvious one but should I copper grease the ones that were on the verge of seizing? Also, a big thank you to white90 for his tech archive entry on how to do it. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=42950
  6. There is a little round gasket, looks like a black rubber washer which is missing from my gasket sets. I presume the 2.5 N/A didn't use it after all. Still, nice to have some spare gaskets!
  7. Thanks for that information. I had a feeling I was on to a winner here. It pays to buy cheap stuff from Newbury, even if it doesn't obviously fit!
  8. Hi all I have a 200Tdi Discovery and I need to remove the timing chest in order to fix a water leak. I have just been in the shed and I have found 3 sets of engine gaskets for a 2.5D and 2 sets for a 2.5 petrol. My question is how similar are all of these blocks? I know the 300Tdi is quite different to a 200Tdi, but from what I can remember the 200Tdi, 2.5D and 2.5TD, and I think the 2.5 petrol look very similar indeed. Would I be able to use some of the gaskets in the sets I have so I don't have to go and buy more? I know the timing chest is different on a Discovery to a Defender on the 200Tdi, I can live with that but the gasket behind the timing chest where it bolts to the engine should be the same on both models? Any more information would be gratefully received.
  9. I don't know. I suppose I get tired of something, sell it and then regret selling it. I kind of regret selling the 90 but dieseldog69 reminded me that I really really hated the lack of elbow room more than anything. So perhaps a 110 would not be a good idea. But I saw a nice 110 on the way home today, white van, lifted, wide wheels, snorkel etc. Looked awesome! Perhaps I will wait. The best things come to those who wait (apparently).
  10. This would not be my daily driver, the Disco is only a toy really and is not used all the time. I have a Picasso as my daily driver and my Wife has an old MX5 which I am in the process of getting MOT'd, so a little soft top sports car for next summer is already covered. I also have a motorbike. I don't know what's going on. Should I get a ponytail and a mistress instead?
  11. That is indeed a good point. I sold my 90 as I couldn't put up with the noise, cold, leaking doors, *insert your own defender annoyances here* and I liked the Discovery for comfort and quietness. Maybe I am just not feeling the love at the moment as I know I have a few leaks to attend to on the Disco and you just feel like you are always chasing some problem or another on a green oval. But there is something about the Landy's that keep you coming back and I just can't explain it. Not sure if it's love or just trapped wind.
  12. I thought about a series, and it would probably be OK, but I don't know if I want leaf springs again. I had an old 109 Series 2a years ago and although it was fun it wasn't really practical for me. Also the turning circle was carp and it had a 2.286 engine in it which isn't what I am wanting now. I kinda want modern-ish technology for comfort and reliability. I think if I was honest my ideal car would be a coil sprung tax exempt something-or-other with a Tdi engine, but that might be a little more difficult to find. Saving £225 a year would go a long way to keeping it running...
  13. I was driving the Disco the other day and I suddenly decided that I think I want something else. Not sure what, but I just feel that I have had enough Discovery's to justify getting something else. On my drive into work this morning I was thinking of a 110. I quite fancy a double cab with a pickup back, or maybe even a station wagon. Also it turns out my Dad may be selling his Pajero SWB. This is a lovely car, automatic and reliable. However, I have had an Isuzu before and although the Jap stuff is great, it just doesn't have any soul. They are just cars. So what should I do? Should I just keep the Disco? It's a 200Tdi with a body lift, snorkel, heavy duty bumpers, QT diff guards, tank guard and detachable tow ball, full length roof rack, suspension lift and only 118K on the clock. Or should I sell it as it is and use the cash to get a 110? Or perhaps get something different altogether? I have a shortlist (all of these should be a solid front axle drivetrain, apart from the Pajero): Toyota Hilux (not surf) Pajero Jeep Wrangler Toyota Land Cruiser (old one) Nissan Patrol (old one) I like the idea of the 110 as it is rugged, big enough to fit the family and the dogs in the back with loads of room to spare. But I know they hold their value and I don't know if a Disco will generate enough cash to buy something worthwhile. And although I don't mind getting my hands dirty, I did enough welding on my old 90 to put me off welding for life! So, what should I do? I welcome your advice.
  14. Hi all I have had a little water leak on my 200Tdi Disco for a while but I have never been able to track it down until Saturday. I was changing the belts on the front when I noticed there was water sat on top of the timing chest, just below the thermostat housing. I changed the gasket behind the thermostat housing yesterday but while it was all apart I noticed that there is a gap behind the timing chest where it meets the block. Does anyone know if this is this a core plug or just the way the block is formed? I am hoping that the gasket I have just replaced will fix the leak because if it doesn't then I suspect it will be either the headgasket or it could be this core plug, if one actually exists there. If this is a core plug and it needs replacing then that is a right nightmare as the whole of the front of the engine will have to be removed. Although I could change it all for a serpentine 300Tdi front... Cheers
  15. £140 fully comp on my old Defender with 5000 miles per year. Your quote seems a little expensive to me. Shop around.
  16. You can get a spacer which doesn't stop the stereo from protruding but it does make it look a little tidier. That is what I did on mine.
  17. If you remove the EGR you can leave the wiring in place as it won't be doing anything anyway. Most people blank off the EGR rather than removing it completely. Another thing you could do is 'tweak' the pump a little. There are plenty of guides around and this will make a big difference to the overall performance. But, you have to remember that although the engines are more or less the same in the Defender and the Disco, the Disco is quite a lot heavier and this would make it feel more sluggish. I think the Disco was the heaviest out of the 110, Range Rover, 90 and Disco. I may be wrong on that though...
  18. I get 430+ out of mine, and I know it's not totally empty when I fill up. The low fuel light is on though.
  19. Engine has already gone and as the gearbox is knackered the rest is not really worth a lot as individual bits. Axles and transfer box are good but again the hassle of removing them to sell is just not worth it. I think ebay is the option.
  20. Hi all I have a 300Tdi Discovery that I was going to break but time and effort are against me. Basically a handful of bits have been sold or removed and all I really have left is part of the dashboard and most of the interior, the drive train which includes a knackered gearbox and a few other odds and sods. The engine is already being fitted into a 90. So is it worth anything as a rolling chassis, even though it is more than that? I have the log book in my name and it is currently SORN and it seems a little bit of a waste to scrap it but I just don't think it's worth the effort to break any more off it. Advice would be greatly received.
  21. I would imagine that it should but you just can't be sure any more. Have you contacted the place you bought it from? Didn't arrive in a blue box did it?
  22. Hi all. I thought I should share this as I am still very impressed with what I have experienced. I posted a query on an exhaust a few days ago, and was pointed in the direction of an exhaust olive. So I looked on ebay (£3.50 ish + postage), few other places too at about £2 +postage. I thought I would try Frogs Island as they are very close to me. £8 ish plus VAT. Too much so I spoke to James French who were £10 ish plus VAT. All a little much for a little bit of tin. Anyway, I searched online and found a company called Mark's Garage so I gave them a ring as the part on the website was very cheap and I wanted to know if it was the right part. Jude asked a few questions, rang me back and said it was the right part and they could do it for under 80p +VAT. UNDER 80p! Anyway, I was well pleased with this so I asked about a few other parts, all were very reasonable in price so I placed and order, making sure that nothing I was going to get was Britpart. All the stuff was AllMakes and she also arranged that rather than paying postage I could collect from the AllMakes depot near where I work in Oxfordshire. Now, you can't ask for anything better than that. I mean, I saved loads on the original olive part and got all the other bits for a good price and I save on postage too. And they were really nice, very helpful and knew what they were talking about. I am not affiliated with them in any way but just had to share this. Please, if you need some bits then give them a ring. They are based in Wallyford in Scotland. 0131 665 1822
  23. At least you were going at a slow speed. High speed would have been very bad. I agree with CwazyWabbit about the wheel bearing failure. That is the most likely scenario. I know a friend who had a similar problem on an MGB where he didn't know that taper bearings are only meant to be as tight as they need to be, not tight until you can't tighten them any more. He was driving when suddenly the car lost a lot of power and was pulling to one side. Luckily it only scored the stub axle but the bearing welded itself together.
  24. Cutting it off was going to be a last resort. But I will try to get an olive instead first
