as the lever snapped right at the "ball" of the selector there was nothing to grip & years of gunge firmly held it in. had no option but to remove top cover. springs all recovered & new ones bedded in with grease, all gears worked perfectly - i simulated action of selector before fitting - all worked ok. grub screw fitted ok.
however you have made me think about the felt ring under gear lever locating ring. a composite material (not felt ) ring was supplied with new gear lever, on checking this today, i`ve found that this has literally disintegrated, presumably when it was torqued down when locating ring was refitted . I will replace with a felt or similar ring and hopefully will take up play in gearlever.
thanks to all for input, want to get it better as we enjoy driving the lancashire and yorkshire dales & that means lots of gear changes !! -- in between pub stops !
