  1. Thanks chaps for your help, last night I got the grinder to the tunnel, and basically just changed the angle where it meets the seat box and removed a bit from the top too and got it to fit all screws in and everything, with a bit of re-drilling. Still can't understand the fitting issue, but all is good. Possibly welding the batt box changed the shape of the seat box slightly but still puzzled!!!... Next question for the expert panel..... prop shafts, my old Td shafts apparently won't fit yet I bolted the front one on to check and it appears ok?!!.. However may have sleeved it together a little more, this gap is prob needed for axle movement, so maybe I need 300tdi ones but there would be very little diff in the overall length between the two shaft types, only mm's from rough measuring.. Anyone done this conversion and remember what to do about this, any help would be great, ta...
  2. Thanks disco Ron and western for the reply, the diagrams that western showed of the engine mounting set up on a 300 tdi whether disco or defender appears to be identical, certainly for a 98/99 as I believe mine is. This would suggest that it is either the tunnel/seatbox set up, which lined up fine when bolted in, or something to do with the box, which is extremely unlikely.... Still can't see why I'm having this problem.....!!!!? Might be time to get the fibre glass kit out and alter the tunnel, not ideal but hey att least it will go off fast!!!...
  3. Cheers for the replies, the problem is I bought a 300 tdi chassis and all the parts (as far as I am aware) that lr would have fitted out of the factory... The plan was that it would all fit without a problem, it is at the most 2 inches out of centre. I may have to bodge it, but just cannot understand how it don't work.. Is there any difference in disco/defender engine mounts or engine side mounting bracket??...
  4. Hello all, I have a little problem i could do with some help with... Rebuilding my 1990 def 90 at the moment, new galv chassis, new suspension and all bolts etc, sec hand 300 engine from a disco, def r380 box. Now, I repaired and painted the old seat box, fitted a new r380 tunnel flange thingy, handbrake plate and fitted the bulkhead diaphragm, I bolted up the seat box and dropped the second hand grp or whatever tunnel in, but the gear sticks are not in the centre of the tunnel opening itself. I was wondering if there is any reason for this and is there anything I can do about it. The engine and box sit very straight in chassis but sticks are too close to seat box!!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys..
  5. My rear half shaft went on my 110 hi cap the other day, it had reamed out at the hub. Managed to get a spare one off an old axle, easy fix, but took me a while and some head scratching to work out exactly what was at fault, might be a similar issue...
  6. Thanks alot chaps, extremely helpful information, part numbers and pictures, ordered all the bits I need, both new and old.. And start sorting it all out in the morning. Also have to run the wiring through the chassis and solder 20+ wires, so should be a good day....! :-). Thanks again for the help, Fionn.
  7. Thanks for that tacr2man, So am I correct that your saying a manual defender 300 tdi r380 gearbox should still fit into and under my tunnel / seat box with all the original TD parts that I already have with no altering or moving the hand brake etc ?!...
  8. Right, thanks for that Mo, I did a bit of offering up and measuring late last night and basically decided that I must need a seat box, now have to see if I can get hold of one that is still capable of hanging on to it's own battery!!!. Thanks alot for your help guys, now on the look out for a good 300 seat box in case anyone has one kikkin about... Which seems unlikely. I take it that td5 are the same?!...
  9. Cheers litch, that was what I thought originally as the sticks seem to pop up in a similar position, so hopefully all I need is the bulk head piece and some new nuts and bolts as have everything else.. I was hoping I didn't have to throw my seat box as I just welded up the batty box and painted it and everything!!! ;-)
  10. Thanks for the reply Sean, very helpful, as it happens I have access to some parts and have a def 300 tunnel and floor plates but no seat box or forward tunnel/bulkhead piece which I'm not sure I would need!?... Would very much like to re assemble it with as little beating and chopping as is possible with a land rover!!!. So may have get my wallet out and do it proper like ) As for the prop shafts Sean, I thought the front one measured up right and the rear one did not!!, which seems a little odd I know but don't quote me on that one...
  11. Thanks for the reply P H, that sounds ideal, wish id done somethig similar now.. unfortunately I had to get a new chassis ( 300tdi ) and used eng mounts as they were and got the r380 cross member g/box mount from a disco and altered it a bit!.. Now I think (having not tried to drop body on yet) that it won't fit over box and transfer with seat box in!!. Was trying to avoid too much more expense as the wallet is thinning out fast... Was always bad at doing my homework!!!
  12. Hello good people, I have recently undertaken the replacement of the rusty old chassis on my 1990 def 90 with a galv one. At the same time swapping my smokey Td engine with a 300tdi from a disco and gearbox for a def r380 gearbox and new axles too, to try and keep it as similar to an lr 300 as possible!!. All is going fairly well, but I am stumbling a little on the tunnel, seat box area..., was wondering do I need a 300 tdi tunnel, seat box and maybe bulk-head to tunnel bit too, or can i make do with the seat box and bits I have?!. Any help on this would be much appreciated as work is on hold for now...
  13. Hello, wondering if anyone can help, i recently had delivery of an r380 300tdi defender box for my 90 project(replacing older engine and box, td lt77), however, it arrived with gearsticks and assembly/linkage removed, and is unable to send them to me, now i am having trouble locating some, as they normally go with the gearbox!!!!. does anyone know where I can get a set of gearsticks? and can any set go with any r380 defender box? some help on this matter would be very much appreciated as i am stuck at the moment, thanks.
  14. A very bad wobble has developed on my def 110 hi-cap, so bad that the tub detached itself on drivers side front due to stress, the panhard rod has some play on axle mount side i beleive movement has caused the bolt hole to become too large, as swinging off it with a metre bar did no work. would there have to be a shock gone aswell, or should I just weld and drill axle panhard mount and invest in a new bolt? any ideas would be appreciated, cheers.
  15. Hello, just signed up to LR4x4 and was wondering if someone could help me, I have a 1990 def 90 which i am re-building, i purchased a 300tdi lump and it's r380 box from a crashed disco, and a new 300 galv chassis. I am having trouble with gear stick position being too far back in the cab when engine lined up on mounts, I was advised by an apparent expert that it would fit with the use of the disco g/box mounting bracket. Have i got the wrong box or am i just missing something Any help on this matter would be much appreciated, cheers, Fionn.
