  1. Thanks chaps. Always full of good advice. I'm not sure I am any nearer diagnosis though - although I will look for the black lump next to my rocker cover. I do need someone to take a look. Not worried about getting dirty - but as I said in subject line, I do think this is getting beyond my basic skills. I am a member of Shire - I noticed recently they just bollocked the facebook group for advertising services . Onwards and upwards. Have a good weekend all, Nick
  2. Hi, I have reached the point where the issue I am trying to solve requires more than the skills / knowledge I have. I have a 200TDi Defender. On start up and until warm I have a bluish black smoke. I have chuffing from the oil filler cap and some oil in the air filter. I have spent hours searching for answers but can't find a cause connected to all the symptoms I have. Turbos going wrong, oil seals, head gaskets are all suggested as causes and if I believe any of those, its sound like it will be easier to get a new engine. Unless the combined knowledge of the forum can magically join the dots that I'm struggling too, then I think its time to head to a garage. I live in Fleet in Hampshire, does anyone know a trusted mechanic or garage that could help me pin down the exact issue I have ? Any input accepted. Thanks in advance, Nick
  3. Or maybe swapping from the 6 bolt to the 4 bolt steering box has changed the geometry ? Just been under the truck again. I read that the drop arm has small threaded hole on the back of it, this is lined up perfectly with the hole in the steering box - so I am pretty confident that I have the steering box centred. So tomorrow I will be adjusting the drag link. I hope I can do this by loosening the clamps and rotating the tube rather than to remove it all. I brought the landie to learn on, but I will be glad to see the back of this job. Nice new steering box looks good now though
  4. Thanks Western & Tacr2man. I have changed from a 6 bolt to a 4 bolt steering box - do you think this is why the draglink needs adjustment ? As I adjust the drag link so that it can attached to the drop arm with drop arm pointing straight ahead, will the other track rods need adjusting too ? Nick
  5. Thanks for the quick response, been hell of a day ! So I understand. Truck back up on axle stands. Take the drop arm off (again! ). Rotate the steering wheel from full lock to lock, mine is 1.75 to the centre too. The drop arm when reconnected should be pointing straight ahead. So with steering wheel centred, drop arm straight out, wheels straight ahead it should all be ok ? I feel I have done this.......although the outcome clearly says otherwise ! If it is as simple as the drag link needing adjusting, why would this change by fitting a new box. To be honest, it sounds the most plausible cause now, but I don't under why that would be ? Nick
  6. The install went fine, however, now full lock when turning right is no longer the full lock I had before - if that makes sense. Worst, its different to full lock when turning left. Spent all day trying to fathom out what I have done wrong, even removed and replaced the drop arm again following Les' guide to the word. Any idea chaps - I really am stumped on this one now Nick
  7. Good evening all, After following Les Hensons excellent guide for changing the steering box on my Defender, I have found I am left with a strange problem.
  8. Amazing what the right tool for the job does for you. Came off, no problem. The best £9 I have spent in ages. Cheers chaps, Nick
  9. Thanks John - amazingly quick answer. Already ordered it ...... Nick
  10. Good evening, I have been following Les Hensons excellent Tech archive guide to replacing my steering box. All going well and looks pretty simple until I reached this point. Les' comments suggest to strike the bar and the steering arm will be free of the tapered drop arm shaft. In the past I have been accused of forgetting this is a landrover and not whacking it hard enough but no amount of smacking it today has shifted it. Not even the smallest amount. Any tips on how to dislodge it ? Or in general to get anything disconnected from a tapered shaft ? Thanks in advance, Nick
  11. Wow, thanks for the quick reply. So a 4 bolt recon or new box with a drop arm already installed will do the trick ? Nick
  12. Evening all, I have a very very leaky 6 bolt pas box in my defender. I have been browsing now for an hour or so and can't find a definitive answer to a couple of questions in my mind; 1) Can I swap from a 6 bolt to a 4 bolt easily ? The 4 bolt seems to be more robust, but is it a straight swap and everything lines up ? Seen some good photographic guides but nothing answers this question. 2) Recon Box vs New. In reality I use the truck just for a bit of green laning or going down the dump, so I don't want to go mad - but can recon from Paddocks, MM-4x4, etc be trusted ? Appreciate your thoughts as always, Cheers Nick
