  1. mines a 200tdi 94 plate would that make a difference
  2. All, I will keep this short. received a phone call from my daughter telling me the headlights on my defender were on and there was smoke coming from under the bonnet. By the time I had beat my way through the traffic the lights were out and no more smoke. Now I know the lights werent on when I left for work as it was dark and I would have noticed. Please could somebody Identify the offending smoking article (i know nothing about electrics) it has a plastic cap under which there is a red fuse going into the bottom is one red lead and one purple also a black earthed to the body. This is bracketed just under the bonnet a third of the way back from the headlight on the drivers side.
  3. Going to change the oil in my defender gearbox, states ATF in the Haynes manual. Is there any particular make oil techies would reccomend
  4. many thanks for the offer, but have decided on brand new Bosch from Paddock, after removing charred one from engine bay this morning. Have scraped knuckles , and poor sunday temper to put me off job for life.
  5. Anyone got recommendations for new starter motor for 2oo tdi defender e.g. make and where from.
  6. Replacing both at the same time is a must. I was a bit daunted with the task at first but after reading up didn't find it to bad. Worst bit was bleeding the system after. Had to resort to length of 3x2 jamming the clutch pedal to the floor, left overnight, Next day full clutch.
  7. Many thanks all for wise words.Mind you it must have looked bloody funny me charging round like a demented Basil Fawlty trying to get water from a knarled up old garden hose. Now struggling to remove exhaust downpipe to begin to assess damage to offending article.
  8. Help, I am after some reassurance. Noticed my Defender struggling to start a couple of weeks a go. Went to start after a week stood up starter moter only managing to click. Flat battery I thought, duly put battery on charge. Reconnected battery and attempted to start, still only cranked very slowly. Like the fool I am continued to crank, nothing. When I say nothing not quite true, this was followed by smoke and flames from the area of the starting motor. Expletives followed, and a mad panic for the hose pipe. Now I am not stupid enough to think that the starter motor is going to be anything but u/s. However is this the portent to something more serious.
  9. Need to top up after replacing leaky seals, recommended oil is EP 80, however I can get SAE 80 AGL4 is this way off the mark or is it the same
  10. Problem when pulling away and then moving into second and gathering speed ive got a noise that is best described as like a loose jubilee clip around front propshaft, tends to die away as more speed and gear change achieved. This afternoon thought I would try in low ratio and found it hard to get any engagement at all, did in the end but high and low not very positive at all. Can anyone give me any pointers please
  11. I know its been done before on this forum but Id like to put in bit of a plug for Christian autos of Kingswood, Bristol. Always sort you out for parts,Pete even stayed open late for me to pick up spares, Topman

  14. Hi, Anyone help. After replacing uj's on front propshaft this evening am looking forward to refitting tomorrow. Thought I would read up via Haynes just so not caught out. They state sliding part of prop goes to the front. Thats the problem, it didnt come off that way. I marked the prop carefully before removal so any advice please welcome
