  1. To answer your question, yes you would be able to charge it on public chargers. They’ve even just reverse engineered the CCS charger, so you can fast charge 50-125kwh dc charge at public chargers that support this. So 80% charge in about 25-60 minutes. Depending on the rate.

‘Timing wise, it’s probably wise to wait 2-4 years, as there’s so many EV’s coming to market in the next 12 months that availability of battery packs, AC Motors, inverters etc will increase from accident damaged cars and prices will come done.

The packs and motors are getting more efficient every year too, the latest 60kw packs seem to be able to give a theoretical 225 mile range for a ~2000kg vehicle, and 80kw about 315 miles. So realistic 170-250 mile range.

  2. Good luck with the treatment Steve. Every case and person is naturally very different, but my Dad lived with a terminal diagnosis for prostate cancer for 8 years. At first any physical change you start to suspect it may have spread somewhere else and suspecting the worse. After a short while he soon moved into a mode of what will be, will be and started to live again, and even when it spread multiple times he just moved into a mode of fitting the treatments around his life, rather than fitting his and everyone else’s life around the various phases of treatment.

Not saying this is the best way to do it, but it’s remarkable how quickly we can all adapt.

Enjoy Christmas and New Year with your family and friend. My time in the garage will be directly proportional to how cold it is 😉

@mickeyw How does the Makita 18V grinder do? The real one I mean.

I’ve got several 18V Makita tools and therefore batteries, and was considering getting the battery one to go alongside my mains Bosch one for the exact reason above. Can have the mains one for the harder work like wire brushing for hours and the battery one will be much quicker to grab for cutting a bolt down or doing something quick.

I’ve got the genuine mid-sized Makita 1/2” impact and its powerful enough to undo the wheel nuts on my 90. I tend to crack them off with the breaker bar anyway but it’s certainly capable. I deliberately bought that size as I want to be able to use it in more places, for example it’s perfect for whipping propshafts on/off. I’ve got a CP air-powered gun for the much tighter stuff like the Tdi crankshaft bolt.

I’ve got one and it’s been very good, but I’m not a heavy user. I probably only do about 10 minutes of actual cutting and grinding in one go. The longest single use is on the flap wheel, where I may use it for 20 minutes or so in one go. The batteries 5ah, if fully charged are still usually on 3 bars and by then the battery is typically then in another tool, so sorry no idea how long they last. I’ve noticed when cutting 5mm steel that it didn’t seem to have the power of the mains one, but otherwise no noticeable difference.

As other have said, they flexibility of no lead is great, only problem is that I only have one battery grinder 🙄

Indeed, and because it’s a P400 model it won’t accept 18” wheels without modifying the rear brakes. Which they may be willing to do but many wouldn’t - myself included.

Probably suits Land Rover, aside from the negative publicity over the engine issue, as they will want the higher spec. models out in the spotlight more than the lower ones.

Ah, but they can sell it for more money next summer to fund their spec’d up Bronco on 35’s when that arrives 😉😉😉

  5. If you’re just using it to monitor drain, why don’t you fit one of these?...

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07W7XXKVF/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_i5ZYFbTZMYYBY

or you can spend a bit more and get a Bluetooth one to use on your phone.

Obviously not portable like a meter, but how often will you need to monitor individual items and using a shunt permanently attached to battery will give you access to it all the time.

  6. It’s simply that they use lithium ion batteries. So they’re good at releasing large amounts of current quickly without much voltage drop unlike a typical lead acid battery.

No idea on large diesels, but I’ve cranked a 4.6 rover v8 multiple times from a mid range unit with no issues. You can crank for longer with them, and they can certainly crank multiple times with no problems.

  7. Yes the vsr can do that for you. So your accessories and your connected spare battery will be powered when engine is on and charging. When the engine is off, they will be powered by your connected spare battery.

‘if you want the scenario where you can power your accessories off the main battery when engine is off and not charging and you don’t have the spare battery connected you can fit a multi position isolator switch...

What’s the output of your alternator? If it’s over 50A (likely) you’ll want to go bigger than the 50A Anderson connector, there’s 120A which should be sufficient or 350A if you want overkill.

  8. It doesn’t sense both ways, you need a more intelligent dc to dc charger to do that. With the vsr in place, yes you can wire your accessories off the vsr so they only get power when the main battery is being charged. When the main battery is not being charged, there is no draw from the vsr or anything attached downstream of it.

If you wire your Anderson connector in the tub, just try to minimize length of cable run as much as possible and use sufficient gauge of wire.

Until fairly recently, I would have agreed.  But the number of apparent coincidences is starting to make me wonder!

I don't think I'm particularly prone to conspiracy theories or irrational belief?

It is possible of course, as =Jon= pointed out that maybe Sarah googled for contactors to find out what the hell I was talking about and the others are genuine coincidences.  Who knows!

    Si

Raiders of the lost ark is, I suspect, popular at the moment due to the death of Sean Connery, and this may have been the reason you and Chris were talking about it. People search for the films Sean Connery has been in, and the popular ones naturally are watched more, moving them up the main popularity charts and hence they’re appearing in both yours and Chris’s recommended lists - combination of current popularity and your previous viewing preferences.

The problem with Google is that even if you turn off monitoring your browsing/search activity, as you say they go on household activity, friends in Facebook etc.etc. even your emails if you don’t again turn it off. Facebook share a lot of data back and forth with Google to increase effectiveness of ads. The more people share on Facebook, the more effective the ads will be. It’s the reason why I personally have had all my Google tracking turned off from the beginning and only use Facebook for LR groups.

I personally, find the ads annoying, in the same way that when I walk into a store and immediately an assistant will come up and ask how they can help or offer to show me their latest range of .... Unfortunately, some people like it, and also the retailers have found that people are more likely to buy/leave satisfied if they do this.

The voice devices from the main players are only listening when the wake word is uttered, or in Siri’s case anything vaguely resembling the wake word 🙄. Then everything is analyzed- most of it aimed at answering your question/instruction. If the voice assistant doesn’t understand your request it’s typically further analyzed, sometimes by a human being to improve it. For the next 5 years or so, if you don’t like voice activated devices, simply don’t use them. The problem comes when every car starts shipping with them, every new build house is mostly controlled by voice- then it will be harder.

My fictional comment earlier was aimed at the folks that make the leap to asserting that these companies are up to no good, are evil, plan to take over the world. For Google and Facebook, their goal is to serve more ads and make them more effective. For Amazon it’s to be the marketplace you choose to buy from. It might be annoying, but it’s not evil.

  10. So to the rear of the RR, I’m running two lighting looms, one for each side (6 way connectors), then running an extra loom for fuel tank pump, sender, and a rear power outlet, plus 3 spare on the 6 way connector. For the rear wiper and rear heated window, I need to run heavier gage wire, so I could run these two in their own loom from the relays on the bulkhead, or I could run a single 12v feed in say 12mm2 to a distribution pole in the rear and position the wiper and heated rear window relays in the rear. That way, I have a fused 12v permanent feed at the rear with plenty of capacity already wired in for potential future use. I can signal the wiper and heated rear window relays from the spares in the extras loom above.

For earths, the wiring would be the same for both options, I plan to put earth distribution blocks on each rear corner, earthed to the RR body frame. The frame will be earth strapped to the battery in the engine bay.

Any thoughts, downsides that I’m missing etc.?

    cheers, Steve

I'd be very curious to see reviews of the original Defender when it was new, see how it compares.

Do agree that buying anything brand new in the 1st year of production is a risk, I also feel like JLR lately are always treading very close to the edge in terms of how much technology they can shoe-horn into a vehicle and make work properly but I guess that's how they can stay ahead of companies with 10x the R&D budget.

It will be interesting to see if they’ve solved the problem where a gentle wet grassy slope will bring it to a complete standstill. Previously no amount of fiddling with the various terrain options would get it to cope with the initial amount of wheelspin on every wheel.

....and another, though I think he is getting a bit carried away, plus attempting to not get banned from test driving any other LR vehicle 😄

Best quote yet though from a reviewer “about as much flex as an ironing board” 😉😉

All the jarring, tipping and bouncing makes it look like an extremely carp experience driving it off road - comfortable everywhere else, but...
