There have been a few suppliers that I got no response from and thus wrote off, Land Rover Series being the worst.  They couldn't even spell "service".

Ironically I filled out their contact form last week and haven't heard anything yet

LRDirect have been good at replying, as well as SP-4x4.

  2. You'll only find greenlaning in South Devon, which are thorny, narrow lanes(!) There's a couple on Dartmoor but they're pretty tame and over in a matter if minutes. It's not really the location for offroading. There used to be a pay and play site at Trago Mills, but I think it's closed now.

  3. I got it down in the end by dropping value from £7k to 6k and Comp to TPFT, bumping mileage from 3K to 10K and dropping excess from £500 to £0! Defies logic.

Only £30 more than last year and with the same insurer by using mustard.co.uk. Not seen that site before and it's the first automated numberplate inputter i've seen in 7 years that correctly identified it as 110 DEFENDER SW TDI rather than 110 TDI HARDTOP.

  4. It's been pretty hot today, so it isn't surprising. I would suspect some part of the cooling system isn't that efficient. Radiator/water pump?

I had my radiator explode just cruising on the motorway on a 30 degree day. There was too much mud in the fins, but had been fine until the ambient temp went up.

  5. It's correct that the propshaft is placed so that the water can drain, it's just that the front short yoke is male and the rear short yoke is female, so the front prop joint goes to the diff end and the rear prop joint goes to the transfer box end (at least on a 110).

  6. So what is happening to the engines that makes them "die"?

I feel your pain having worked with a few lodges in Zambia and Malawi. Those businesses are all worried about what will happen when their Pumas get old. 300Tdis win. You're in a tricky position because your vehicles are so modified and are working beyond the limit of what Defenders were designed for. Typical safari vehicles are 3x3 benches on a standard Hicap.

Td5's can be a bit of a stretch for typical mechanics, but replace like for like and get a good auto electrician. The electrics have even stumped seasoned SA mechanics. Personally I would always go 300Tdi in that environment, but if you need the power then Td5 is what you'll have to use. With 15 vehicles, you really need a workshop manager, as it's a full time job to be over their shoulder 100% of the time making sure they don't round off bolts or put engine oil in the clutch fluid......

  7. +1 for getting whatever is a very common vehicle out there. Also +1 for importing it, as anything good (Land Cruiser/Defender) will probably have a hefty premium as they're so valued. I can't speak for Madagascar, but in Malawi I had to import Suzuki spares from the UK., very annoying. Toyota would probably be the answer.

  8. Paddocks should get you a new one for free. That is some awful damage.

When I bought my rear crossmember with extensions, I opened the door and watched the courier hit it on every step on the way down to my door. I got some money back rather than replace, as it was mostly superficial and I was going to repaint it anyway. It wasn't Paddocks though.
