Likely leaking as western says. My Ashcroft R380 started leaking at a year old. Apparently years later they found out they used a batch of substandard main shaft rear collars where the oil seal runs on. I've lived with it for 8 years as it's not worth the effort to fix. The oil level goes down less than 100ml between 2 yearly services

Thoughts and musings on the new defender
dailysleaze replied to Jamie_grieve's topic in New Defender Forum (2020 onwards)
The problem with JLR is Gary McGlitter. Anyway, some video screenshots of the underneath. Can't see a sump plug poking through the bash plate? What a chore. -
Recent experience of Shielder Chassis ??

The comments from this guy are pretty horrendous about a 2018 era chassis: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic70634.html He seems to look on the bright side as he's halfway round the world, but a brake pipe hanger being 30mm out? If I was setting up a business building chassis I'd get a real chassis, make a negative jig and built to that. How can they get it soooo wrong from the outset? -
James May now owns one of each hydrogen and battery electric and sums up the debate between the two quite nicely in this video from 9:10: Whatever the "proper" solution is is an interesting thought experiment, but the real solutions are being implemented right now by the business world and if conclusions from rigorous research into the best for our society/economy/environment can't be implemented in the real world then we'll end up with what we end up with. The best and most efficient technologies aren't always the ones that win in the end.

Vehicle insurance and declaring "modifications"
dailysleaze replied to Peaklander's topic in International Forum
I send a 2 page pdf of anything different than it left the factory with, just to cover myself, and its accepted by Flux - they seem to be quite accomodating. These are mostly "seats fitted from later model Defender" and such like, rather than performance enhancements. -
Get it through another MOT

Around town, it makes it easier to accelerate into traffic gaps on a roundabout but hill starts require more clutch slip. Overall my 1.2 Box change has been positive.

This is a good place to start: https://www.lrworkshop.com/connectors/defender-1996-300tdi/colour Most likely they are for the interior light or door switches -

Thoughts and musings on the new defender
dailysleaze replied to Jamie_grieve's topic in New Defender Forum (2020 onwards)
Why aren't they comparing it to the old Defender? It shows they've abandoned the market that it was built for. Marketing is all smoke and mirrors. The second iPad was marketed as "lighter" than the first, the third was marketed as "faster" than the second, but was heavier than the second and almost as heavy as the first. Similar to when whichever RR model "lost" 400kg by moving to an aluminium chassis, no doubt it was weight gained in a previously bloated edition. -

Try this. There's some photos of screws also. https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-interior-trim/trim/facia-moulding-from-(v)-2a000001_53594 -
They're getting worse I think. Genuine items arriving loose or in random bags has happened frequently to me in recent years. They may have run out of stock of their genuine parts, but have chosen not to update their website and are trying to supply alternatives in place of this.

Hicap - Diagnosis help needed please - strange one !
dailysleaze replied to joncat's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
A similar thing happened to me and it was a wheel bearing that collapsed. You couldn't tell just by looking, I had to jack the vehicle up to check the play. -
One hub end cap keeps popping off - ideas?
dailysleaze replied to FridgeFreezer's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Excessive CV joint end float? Should be shimmed up behind the circlip to give 0.08 to 0.25mm IIRC -
Here are some dimensions: https://www.lrworkshop.com/parts/BX110095M

Depends if that one is your perfect Defender. Spend the money if it is, OR sell for £3500 and use the £7000 you would have spent doing it up to buy a better Defender for £10,500. An 18 year old vehicle in that condition will only be a money pit from now on.

Thoughts and musings on the new defender
dailysleaze replied to Jamie_grieve's topic in New Defender Forum (2020 onwards)
I see they also guessed the starting price correctly, just below the logo -
There's tons appeared on ebay recently at around £14-1500, so I imagine they're all from the same source

Thoughts and musings on the new defender
dailysleaze replied to Jamie_grieve's topic in New Defender Forum (2020 onwards)
The early Leafs had carp batteries with a massive degradation in capacity over time, which are now coming into the second hand market. The pace of innovation and increases in energy density of batteries is astounding. We're probably only 2 years away from a 400 mile range electric vehicle on a single charge. Tesla batteries are pretty good. They heat their batteries when it's cold and cool them when they're hot, so they're always at the optimum temperature to prolong their life. The batteries in the Model S are replaceable, but in the latest Model 3 they're integrated into the car, so Tesla have decided they aren't worried about having to replace them. A lot of people's preconceptions with electric vehicles are being thrown out because of the pace of innovation. 5 years ago is like the stone age. Permanently installed batteries are probably here to stay. I'll be interested to know if they launch the new Defender with a full electric version or it'll be a hybrid and we'll have to wait. -
