a few points- no this is not a joke no he is not Irish bowie69-when i spoke to him he was quite shocked at what was being said about him,he said he never tried to swerve in front of anyone or force him off the road(remember he had his 5 year old daughter with him) i posted this as my MATE has no access to a computer at the moment and i thought he needed his side of the story told.

No need to panic about being car jacked,i know the guy with the sprinter(he is a good friend of mine). I asked this morning if it was him who tried to stop an orange bobtail yesterday,he said he only wanted to have a chat about some the mods you had done to it(i am helping him modify a range rover at the moment),also when you turned on to packet boat lane he thought you were going to stop,thats why he followed. One other thing is the other two people in the van were his 5 year old daughter and his wife. Hope this puts your mind at rest as i have been on the recieving end of some nasty road rage and it does shake you up a bit. cheers Ian

I tried that still didnt work,the tube was so hard it cracked the former on my bender(machine mart),at first i thought it was just the formers being carp quailty.So i hired a rothenberger bender,the tube still kinked,i then tried some scaffold tubing and it bent it perfectly with no marks whatso ever.After this i got the hump and ordered the flatpacked cage. I had this problem last year,bought 12 lenghts of blue band(bs1387) and it kept on kinking,so i hired a proper bender,still kinked. In the end the people who i got it from phoned their surplier and found out that some of the metal coming china at the moment has a high carbon content making it brittle.My surplier give me a full refund and i a bought a flat packed rollcage from malcom whitbead(highly recommended)instead. the new jeep wrangler ads in the states show them fitted with the tyres Will pictured,i think their made special for the car.(www.jeep.com) Also there was a thread over on pirate a couple of weeks back about the KM2,saying it has roughly the same tread as the krawler just alot harder compound.

we had great weekend thanks to neil and his team it was a real eye opener for us as we had not been to this site before and it was a steep learning curve (attemped punch 1 around 10.30,ground anchor came loose sending me backwards onto large pointy rock resulting in one rather bent trailing arm ) apart from that it was a good event sorry adrian for trying to remove your front bumper wile towing you to car park (no excuses,just carp driving ),also do you still have my wd40 can?

Just thought i would post this for anybody who lives near west london and is after some blue band tube(bs1387 48.3mm x 3.2mm x 7.5m). I bought some today from a company called FAYS METALS(0208 993 883 and ask for dave) in acton,got them for £34 a lenght(i got 12),now for the good bit,they said as long as you order more than 2 they can do it for the same price ,thats £4.50 inc vat a metre which is a bloody good price coincidering most firms want £6.50+ a metre. Just say Ian from london underground told you about it.

I built my beadlocks about 4 years ago,i saw a review of rockstompers diy kit in a yank 4x4 mag and made my own version of theirs. The only problem with rockstomper and straightforwards design is that it is welded straight to the wheel without prepping it first. With my wheels i ground the outer lip down to about 60degrees,the same was done with the inner beadlock ring.This gives it a nice v prep. the grinding and welding were done on a jig i made(1 1/2 solid bar welded to a scrap stub axle,then an old landy hub bolted to stub axle),once clamped in vice the wheel would spin perfectly true. Then its just a matter of tacking inner ring on,making sure its true,then weld it on solid.I had the rings laser cut locally for £20 a ring,nuts,bolts and washers came from work. Also no difference to running normal wheels on the road even at motorway speeds hope this helps ian

T-max ew11000 (£380) 100' of 11mm dyneema(£150) 50mm fireproof cable from underground train (free) albright contactor(£60) 120amp chevy v8 alternator and big cheap battery(£90) homemade stainless fairlead(£20 worth of metal made 4 fairleads) I have run this setup on my 90 for two years now without one single problem,i didnt bother fitting the original solinoids(seen too many fail at really nasty moments).I very rarely use a snatch block as it is not needed,it will pull all day without fuss. It is a bit slow but very strong, good winch for the money

maverick-Thanks for offer, but the guy i was doing this for had to get his car going this weekend,so he ended up buying a new cover. mmgemini-Only the outer casing bits hit me(spindle made a nice dent in the metal wall),as for pushing bearing out,its pretty straight foward.I just found a piece of mild steel bar,turned it down 2mm smaller than o/d of bearing, put a step in the end of the bar(to locate in the back of bearing)and pressed it out(from inside case out). jim- Thanks for the email address,we looked into making a new part at work,can be done just would take some time. We have quite a few people in our offroad club who have 300tdi engines(this is the third bearing failure i have heard of),so i was looking for a quick and easy replacement rather than custom make every one which takes time.Somebody, somewhere must know where you can get these bearings,they cant have all been fitted into covers and sooner or later good second hand front covers will dry up leaving people no other option other than to buy new one.

Thats the one,it is two bearings in one(needle at the front,roller at the back). First thing i did was pop the rear seal to have a look,but there was too much play so i just pressed it out. Once out of the case the spindle looks like it is pressed into an inner sleeve but it wasn't as i found out (6 ton flypress,two blokes,one loud bang and lots of metal flying around the workshop ). I was told the only way to replace it was to buy complete new front cover(£130).I have tried all the local bearing traders and even our suppler(i work for london undergrounds signaling and train workshop)who spoke to skf direct.

I hope someone on this board can help,i need to now if their is a company who can supply the spindle bearing in the front timing cover of a 300tdi.I spoke to skf(who made the original bearing),but they have discontinued making it.Any info would be much appreciated. cheers Ian
