  1. Have you actually bought engine yet? Just a thought - a lot of salvage yards have them as well as decent prices - got mine from Equicar - brilliant guys! Also, if engine bidding fails - I noticed for some reason disco 300's are cheaper than defender 300's, so worth bearing in mind if you have to keep looking!
  2. Hi, James 100 here. Yeah, as Paul (moose) said, I did this 2 weeks ago, but the other way around. As already said, engines are virtually identical. Even the engine mounts, so no need to swop them around! There were only a couple of small differences (bear in mind I have a 1996 defender and engine came from a1996 disco): 1) disco engine had cruise control on pump, which my defender did not have, so you may have to swop pupmps for easiest route. 2) disco engine had sensor of some sort on top of head, which again defender did not have, so now unplugged. Not sure what it's for, but looks like a temp sensor of sorts. 3) Wiring looms are totally different - disco has battery under bonnet, defender has it under passenger seat, so basically, use your original disco wiring loom! Possibly some hoses may be different, so use original ones. Are you changing clutch/cambelt as it makes sense, seeing as you need to remove engine or gearbox anyway to do this! (well, clutch anyway) Also I would use the oppurtunity to flush out the radiator and intercooler, seeing as they are coming out also! Hope this helps! James
  3. Funny how many people have mentioned that! But no , he wasn't. But someone else was - never listen to anyone, that's my new motto!!
  4. Hi Southampton............ Cheers James
  5. Having drowned my engine just over a week ago (see getting out there, seven sisters post) although I have been reassured by many people, it is really starting to appear that the engine internals are 'not as they should be'. Whilst I haven't given up all hope just yet, I am investigating all the options open to me. Does anyone have any experience of refurb'd engines, and more to the point, different suppliers? Turner's name pops again more than others, but they are not the cheapest, and to be frank, I hadn't planned financially for this (does anyone??!!) so want to look at all options. Anyone got a couple of grand they don't need!! Lol! Am going to do a compression test this week, and take it from there, but am not holding out too much hope! I can do most things, but rebuilding an engine - 300tdi - is not something I would like to trust myself with! Any thoughts anyone? Cheers James 1996 110 300tdi (unhappy)
  6. Nah - I think submarines don't let water in through the doors?!
  7. Diff Oil to be changed as soon as I get a chance! No, Snorkel is fitted correctly, sealed etc etc. What I hadn't done was seal the drain at the bottom of the air box. Doh! Pose effect then? I wish - all my spare money goes on running the thing. Oh, and playing with boats.
  8. Yup, I was the one wearing the saloppettes. Did an oil change on Monday morning - came out nice and black with no water (that was obvious anyway). Just awaiting a new back window now!! Many thnks again for all the help! With Paul's bullbar, he had a fight with a tree and lost!
  9. Hello I'm new to this forum........slowly being dragged away from Lro one.......... Anyway, I'm the guy (prat?) with the green 110 in the 'pond'. Sods law says it was the one time that weekend I didn't bother checking out how deep it was (or what the bottom was like). I've learnt now! Just wanted to say a massive thank you to all the marshalls who helped us to 'extract' the beastie, and then get it going again. Cos whilst we were waiting for you to arrive I was sat there thinking 'oh sh!t, time for an engine rebuild'. Luckilly so far she seems ok.....quite smokey but definately getting better. Thanks again guys...I reckon that was beyond the call of duty. If you're at the next social meet there'll be beers awaiting. James
