  1. Just had a miller 450 on demo as the agent insisted and I have to say its one of the worst welders ive ever used ,though it may be ok in spray mode. Being drawn to the technical arc(make the oxford mig) pulse mig
  2. The bridgeport is my only machine with a draw bar as its my only manual machine and even that seems like one too many, power is the way forward . I did try fadal vmcs back in the late 90s and they had the most unreliable power drawbar ever made, I felt like retro fitting manual to them!
  3. Is yours a vari speed head, mine is and the draw bar head sits down, but hey why I do I bother posting, what ever I say is contradicted so god knows how Ive stayed in business twenty years!!
  4. Yes that is normal, also some drawbars are extra long with a collar . This is because the thread wears in the hardened tool, so once the first inch is worn out you trim it off and remove the collar to get double the lifespan.
  5. Carbide is the way forward for running machines without coolant, the nasty foreign steel with hard spots, and repairing/modding stuff the laser cutter got wrong! as hss wont last five minutes on it
  6. I forgot to mention ,one thing really worth having is an adapter to take rotabroach bits. With that even the humble bridge port can pop a 50mm hole with ease
  7. I believe er32 is the limit for r8 with a 20mm max collet size
  8. Need a new mig around the 400a mark. I called ITW the miller agents to find that european spec millers are not millers at all, just the wire feed unit is actually a miller, which I dont think is really on when they are charging miller usa money. Has anyone here had good experience with a production grade mig they can recommend. thanks for reading
  9. I just black it with a acetylene flame the burn off, quite a quick process.Wouldnt even attempt that with some grades though!
  10. Get a Er chuck if one comes up as they are current and dont use manufacturer specific collets(I like clarkson or osbourne autolocks but they are no longer made),R8 collets can be a pest when trying to machine in pockets where the machine spindle is too larger diameter to clear the sides. If you cant hold the spindle brake and undo a collet chuck at the same time your in trouble! My experience is in actually owning a subcon cnc/conventional machine shop and having all sorts of nasty stuff to do including second ops on bridgeports and having both tool holding systems is vital.
  11. er collets are standard tooling now due to the cnc revolution in even small shops. They grip much harder, especially useful when using dovetail cutters etc, As for height issue when you have something big on the table or a dividing head those few inches r8 collets can save make it a yes or no job.Riser blocks are good but hard to find and sought after. Also in using a collet chuck albiet clarkson or er, when doing tool changes your not undoing the drawbar which is much slower
  12. E bay is the way forward, even the china junk isnt that bad. Get the collets that go direct into the spindle as the bridgeport suffers from a lack of ram height. A er 32 collet chuck would be good as these series are industry standard now, the days of the clarkson auto lock are over because a lot of tooling is now weldon shank
  13. i use a stainless wire brush on ally ,emery cloth is dirty
  14. Thats why I had a syncrowave imported from the states as I was not prepared to have another expensive inverter die just out of warranty.
  15. Ive got a 40yr old miller and a brand new miller syncrowave and I genuinely think unless your welding on minimum amps where modern machines have great arc control, weld cleanliness has much more effect on success than a fancy welder. That said I learnt to ally weld with gas so any tig set seems easy.
  16. I think wider track axles would be sensible to try and make the thing more stable. Ive forgotten the name of the company, but I had a firm that specialises in camper 6 wheel conversions do the paperwork for me when uprating a self made 6x6 to 4500kg gross, wasnt that expensive either
  17. Dead right, suprising how gloves with slight contamination on the gloves can ruin a ally job
  18. goat skin cheapos from boc are what Ive used for years
  19. try and find yourself secondhand pollstore cabinets , hard to find but industrial quality that makes snap on look like junk
  20. Looks like its been hit by something heavy and slow and held fast maybe?
  21. Done a few, old fairy units and a old ramsey. They all ended up on low loaders etc not landys so plenty of room , but worked well speed just right.
  22. My favorite bit is when they give each other a cup of tea, the cup is obviously empty and they pretend to drink!
