Apparently, it was planned but dropped.  There is speculation that it was for cost saving on a vehicle that had already significantly exceeded planned sales price, that it was to save weight and a few other reasons floated.

I'd suggest it was weight and emissions as the Grenadier was already about 200kg over original target. As Ineos Automotive have deemed the aftermarket to provide them, I'd suggest they got ditched before formal homologation.

  2. I've signed up for the updates as they come, so I'll add them here. I really don't see me buying a Fusilier when they are released; my Grenadier will only be 3-4 years old and I intend to run it to expiry, (mine or its!)

  3. I've asked around and a couple of people have suggested a few possible snags. Some countries have professional licensing, so unqualified people are not allowed to do tasks for which they are not qualified. In the UK anyone can set up as a car mechanic, but that is not the case in many places. Often this goes with restrictions on who can have service data. Suppliers can also be restrictive on who can have IP/data, confining it to official licensees.

The Right to Repair movement in the USA is not a expectation that the general public can  take any and everything apart, just that not just franchised shops have access to the service and mechanical data.

Have they still not published the manuals?  That was a key selling point, as was the support, so there would seem to be grounds for mis-selling the product.

Still not published; last semi-official word I had was the end of Q1 2024. The MD said in Australia that they had issues with different jurisdictions about the data they could release, but there is not one coherent message.

  5. Always buy a Defender on condition and take a disinterested mechanically aware mate to talk you out of the rusty dogs you will meet!

The usual used-car advice is buy the best one you can afford; for a Defender I'd suggest keeping 20% of your budget back for fixing bodges you find once the vehicle is home or to make it more useful to you.

As a young driver, keep it as standard as possible and see if adding parents or grandparents as named drivers reduces the insurance cost.

As for engine choice, none are rubbish, (except the TD), but there are a lot of 300Tdi spares out there.

  6. Stills are not the best way to view video footage; it's often better to view a video clip to try and deduce a registration. There is some commercially available software for producing a composite still from a video clip which appears to sharpen a resultant still image.

Dashcams will always be a compromise and cost is not always a good indicator of quality.

  7. As an example of my Road Angel Halo Pro, here are front and rear shots taken by the system automatically as the pothole rattled the sensor enough.

They're taken as the light fades in the centre of Leicester, yesterday. The rear camera is noticeably less clear, as expected with the specification.

@jeremy996 Any news yet on the publication of workshop manual, diagnostic information etc. for owners to enable home maintenance and servicing?

This is one of the main appeals of the vehicle to me, along with its potential for longevity could make it a worthwhile investment. A lot of noise was made about it pre-launch but I have not seen anything yet.

Not so far. The last time I put the After-Sales Director on the spot, he said the end of Qtr1 2024, so it is due soon. The dealers have the full monty and sometimes print off bits for their customers, but the company MD said there were legal issues around the release when she was quizzed in Australia.

Just looking at your profile pick Jeremy, do you by chance own a Grenadier? If so, I'm very jealous! (Also, I have not read miles back on the chat so appreciate I am probably asking something that has already been stated 😂)

If so, how does it drive compared to the old defender?

Yes, I have, collected 22/04/2023 and I've done 14,500+ miles so far. There is a Members Vehicles thread that covers my experiences and issues.

  10. Mass consumption is an economic dead end. Unlimited expansion of consumerist policies is the direct cause of global warming, species depletion, loss of habitat etc.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle taken to the logical conclusion, assuming you don't want to go back to the Middle Ages, is buy the best stuff you can afford once and maintain it.

Most of the Grenadier specification drift is down to global safety regulations and the marketing requirements so they can sell them across segments. Regulation, economics and marketing drives all manufacturing and everything represents a compromise somewhere.

Compared to a FFRR, its a tractor!
