did your instructor exsplain about the onion(as you weld to get correct penitration you have a little onion shape at the edge of the weld pool) also when welding ally are you using the same tungson as for stainless/steel as for ally or you swaping to a 2% zirconian -
i only use starret ones they last a lot longer than the cheeper brands

chester tool company do a tube notcher or you could use this copping paturn designer in this link http://www.metalgeek.com/static/cope.pcgi its very good just type in the size of tube and the angle then print out the paturn wrap around the tube then cut

i was once told by an old engineer to use two nuts welded together along the flats (it dousent mater weather they are m8 or m30) but the angle between the two are the perfect angles for a drill i have a m24 one in my box and use it every time i need to sharpen drill

i use the slitting disks they are great(can even cut curves if your carefull) BUT there are good ones and bad ones the ebourer make from srewfix are very good as are the rodus ones from tool station the norton ones on the other hand are carp (as quick as you touch the steel they disapeer) they even do a 2mm thick one for the 9" grinder (great for box/tube -
if you wanted both why didnt you look for a welder had both funtions ive just got a weco multi it does mig/dc tig/stick all in a inverter set the size of a ammo box it welds great and i only needed to buy the torches that use the euro plugs
