To slightly bend the topic boundary - Mobiles in hills: anyone know why some Swedish people I was with were able to pick either of two service providers in Scotland a couple of years ago, but because my Orange mobile couldn't get an Orange signal I was stuffed! Why doesn't global roaming work within the UK? If it did then mobiles would be far more useful in rural areas... My phone could see the other SPs but wouldn't connect to them. Rog

Hi MadCanuck, Never tried to 'tune' my V8 (not yet anyhow) but from what I know of motorcycles, headers are a very important part of an exhaust system and merely slapping on a big-bore back-end is no match for the complete system. One look at the stock headers will tell you that they are designed to please the accountants not the engineers - they are crude, heavy and are definitely not built with performance in mind. A decent set of headers will give smoother flow, possibly some degree of length-tuning and will be a lot lighter. On the down-side, they will (apparently) pass more heat into the engine bay. You could try insulating them - there are lots of opinions both ways but IMHO it's best for power if the exhaust gas stays hotter down the pipe (formula one teams insulate their headers). There is an interesting thread on header insulation here. Oh and of course tubular header just look so-o-o-o much better when you lift the bonnet (sorry - the "hood") Any pics of the truck/rebuld?   4. Welcome Francis, I met a bloke with an early 110"V8 in the eighties and he told me that LR had fitted restrictor plates under the carburetors which he had removed - could this be what you heard about? I'm sure that someone on here will know the answer Rog
  5. I now have 3 of these (cut, grind and wire-brush) - the oldest is several years old and all work perfectly. not sure if they would stand up to 'professional' use, but for me they are fine. At the checkout when I bought my last one they offered to 'extend the warranty' to 3 years (that's a two year addition) for £3.50 I think... I didn't take them up on it.. Rog

Even if there is some problem with the injector pump, surely the first line of attack (and the cheapest) is to deal with the breather which is presumably blocked otherwise it would capable of venting the extra air? And if the breather IS blocked then it is not also possible that temperature changes could cause the tank to get pressurised/evacuated? Rog

  8. Had a look at your gallery - good job you're doing there, Nobber I thought I had it hard doing mine in front of the garage, but it looks like you are doing it out in a public space! Additional info on petrol engines - put some in my Honda CBR600 and the annoying buzz in the RHS footpeg at 7000rpm has gone - feels a lot smoother all through the rev range too Can't tell about the power - on these roads I never dare open it up fully - but it certainly feels better. Can't wait so get some in the 3.9 EFI. Anyone know if STP will stop tappet rattle? Roger - additives in everything from now on - Watkinson

Last week I bought a repair panel for my '90 RRC, described on the web-site as: Front headlight box - RH - RANGE ROVER 1986-1994 RR339R £37.50 ex VAT I didn't want to start cutting out the old one until I could see the extent of the replacement, so on Saturday afternoon I chopped out the old one and prep'd up ready for welding on Sunday. Sunday morning was fine and (for a change) not too windy, so I started clamping up the replacement part and then noticed that it was the wrong part! There are extra brackets on this one and several holes and slots missing, Should I mangle it myself or send it back and get the correct one? Decided to do the latter (which meant that I lost the day) So today I called Paddocks and was told that they only stock one for the whole range to '96 ! The mods required are not huge (probably an hour's worth done carefully) but what annoyed me is that I lost a day! On the plus side the value is excellent, and when I clamped it up, the assembly fitted perfectly - quality kit. It's just a shame that Paddocks don't make it plain on the web-site that it would need work to fit later models. I am taking photos of the work and will post when finished... Rog
  12. On non-permanent 4x4 (ones where they can use the rolling road) they can (and IMHO do) check that it works - but not accuracy. Also, on my RRC the tester would take it out for a drive to "check the brakes & speedo" (since he couldn't put it on a single-axle rolling road)... I had a look on the web for the official test regs, but can't find it - so who knows the definitive answer? Rog
  13. I saw a TV prog once which featured a disabled off-road racing driver. IIRC he only had one arm and was bloody quick... From somewhere around the Med I think. Nice to see people getting out there and doing it in spite of problems like that... Rog

I got the AWDC Challenge Event Regulations 2006 from somewhere - I thought they would give me guidance in my build - and they state (among other things) that vehicles should be fitted with: ...circuit breaker which isolates the battery from all electrical circuits and cuts the engine at the same time and is easily operable by the driver whilst correctly seated. And if you have a winch: ... a second circuit breaker which isolates the winch from all other electrical circuits <cut & shut> clearly marked and in an accessible position <cut & shut> a marshal should be able to see it and turn it off.   17. Did think of that, but I don't have a blow torch or oxy set and I am also a bit concerned in case the inside of the chassis (which I think is waxoyled) catches fire! (Although I guess I could just stick a hose up the end if it did) Would you happen to know if a little B&Q blow torch would work? (I always had access to oxy/acetelene in the past) Rog
  18. I heard somewhere that China's CO2 output per person is only a fraction of ours - and minute compared to the States... Not trying to make a point - just comment. Rog
  19. It made a remarkable difference to my 112000 mile TD (Peugeot). Stopped the smoking on application of throttle, removed what I thought was turbo-lag, starts better and runs smoother - haven't checked yet but it must be doing more mpg. So impressed I got some for the CBR600 and will be getting some for the RRC one day when I finally get it going... 99p from Halfords Rog
  20. the bolts that hold the RRC towing drop plate supports - the ones that go through the tubes welded on the underside of the chassis... After sheering them at the nut end I spent weeks squirting them every day with WD40 before finally I sheared off the bolt head too (at least I got the supports off then!) Now I am faced with the remains of the bolts in the tubes and (after a couple of months of the WD40 treatment and continual bashing with a large pin-punch) I have to face the fact that I am beaten. Rog
  21. Tried it years ago on a motorcycle head - not impressed. And that was in a machine with a hot-wash temp of 95degC - they don't seem to go above 65 nowadays... WRT detergents - most (apparently) have added salt as a water softener.. Don't want that! and apparently washing soda (whatever that is) will dissolve alloy IMHO it would take a lot to beat a decent scrub in a parts washer (or in my bachelor pad - the kitchen sink! )...
