  1. Thanks for input everyone. Now I can find it, the connector will unfortunately fall off, or fuse 8 will blow, this afternoon. (temporarily) Just picking up on some of the other comments; 1. I have no choice to ignore it short term - I'll add it to the list of things to repair! 2. I have read a lot of threads on this issue, so i'm fairly sure it is a sensor but at £70 a go , etc. 3. When the abs light is on it's not a prob - as no abs so no interfering by it (the abs). 4. What i understand from other threads, and from my experience, it that the sensor tells ABS its locked so dont apply braking. This results in the pedal going hard-ish (not the vacuum pump - that was different) , and you can sort of feel a chung-chung-chung but virtually no brakes whatsoever. push as hard as you like, nothing. But lift off and then reapply and its fine (i'm guessing the sensor or the ring or something then re-evalutes and decides oh no, we're not locking up after all so give him some brakes). It isnt speed depnedent - travelling at 50 on a dry road it does it - the reaosn i've reached breaking point (no pun) is that normally i'm a pretty boring driver so brake well ahead, and have time to re-apply the brakes. But it happended the other day in stop start traffic and i was millimetres away from the car in front by the time i had braked, panicked, thought, lifted and braked again. And obivously if i had a real emergency there aint no time for a second chance at braking. Thanks again all.
  2. Disco 1 300tdi automatic gearbox. I think I have a faulty ABS sensor - very very occassionally, you press the brake pedal and feel a chung-chung-chung with no brakes. If I lift off and re-apply the brakes, it's fine. The problem is the split second in between - the natural reaction is to push harder and this has no effect. So I'm thinking that if I had the misfortune to blow a fuse, this would result in a brake pedal that applied the brakes, albeit with no abs (until i can replace the sensor). I can see two fuses under the drivers side dashboard, and one big fuse in the engine compartment. (I've also read elsewhere about a passenger side relay and a plug on the abs modulator but i dont really know which/where these are - hence focussing on a fuse) So, if I had the misfortune to blow a fuse, or several, that temporarily disabled ABS but left me with brakes, which fuse, or fuses, would it be. Thanks Ant
  3. All input welcome on my continuing head problems Background - head gasket blew 5 years ago and head was skimmed etc all done by garage. all fine until last month when head gasket went again - between 2 and 3 cylinders. i replaced head gasket (3 hole gasket from paddocks), and all fine for 2000 miles, then plastic coolant plug above thermostat housing popped out. recovered to a landrover dealer who say head gasket has gone again (they say they replaced plug, refilled coolant and did a pressure test) - but they want 400 euro to take head off before they'll tell me what problem is. Can't afford their prices so will recover the vehicle tomorrow. Do I need a new head? - I dont know enough but I'm thinking the 3 hole gasket is the thickest and maybe i cant skim any more off the head - i assume there's a limit to skimming? If i do go down the new head route, can i re-use the exisitng rocker gear etc - ie just new head and new head bolts, plus gaskets or are there other components that should be replaced as a matter of course? (plus brass coolant plugs not the plastic one which i may have overtightened) Any comments on paddocks heads? - i saw some criticism elsewhere of the paddocks gaskets when it was too late. Valves - do i need to grind valves in ? Thanks for all input - I want to get everything right if i do a new head as the previous gasket replacement by me was a lot of work apparently in vain! Ant
  4. Thank you very much everyone. From the sounds of it, I think the tightening could be a case of user error (haynes workshop manual is in the car so i cant look at it to see what i 'mis'-read) I'll replace the plug with brass/ally as this seems to be very sensible - i'll also make sure i dont overtighten! Thanks again all Ant
  5. Disco 300tdi - the plastic filler plug on the thermostat housing has lost its head. I need to understand why - a fault that you guys know of or just bad luck and unrelated to the history below? Recent histroy - head gasket blew and has been replaced. Changed all filters and fitted an ERG blanking plate at the same time. Coolant refilled slowly via 3mm bore pipe syphoned in. Only possible issue was expansion tank was 2/3 full not half. All seemed ok - slight distraction as rear brake pipes burst on first test drive - fitted copper pipe and did both as the other looked very corroded also. Did some short runs and checked for leaks all round. All seemed ok. Temp guage in the middle. Did an airport run (178 miles) and all seemed fine - temp guage in middle once warmed up (10 mins ish) Various other short journeys ... - then wife did an airport run - arrived at last roundabout (so 79 miles) - and huge puff of steam exiting left hand side of bonnet. She left it to cool down and then we did examination by phone - oil level fine, coolant refilled, engine started - checked for bubbles in header tank (none). Then she asked if there should be a hole in the top of the thermostat housing! So the plastic filler plug has gone - I dont actually know if its just the plastic plug head or the whole thing. One thing to add is that i tightened the filler plug down (with new rubber ring gasket) per haynes - 27lb i think, which did seem to be very tight. So the big question - just unlucky or a sign of something more serious? - i am fairly sure there was no airlock in cooling system - refilled slowly with heater on, etc Your thoughts very much appreciated - Ant
  6. Thank you very much for your help. I'll get cracking when the new head gasket arrives - if I had managed to count to three I'd be doing it now (I thought I could only see two holes in the head gasket so ordered the wrong one - a not too expensive error as in a week's delay and another £10!)
  7. Hi, Head gasket blew on my 300tdi. - 2 and 3 cylinder into water jacket. I 'sort of' followed the guide in the tech section by Les, and havent removed everything from the head (so valves and injectors etc still in situ). I cant identifyall of the gaskets in the head set, so grateful for some help. I guess another question would be should i bother dismantling more than necessary - e.g. valves to fit new valve stem seals (as never really used much oil), etc
