  1. 1989 110 station wagon, originally a 2.5TD I have a Salisbury rear axle and will be replacing the diff casing. The oil filler bolt had been overtightened and damaged the threads on the casing (by previous owner, I think.) So when I came to refill the oil, the fill bolt did not tighten but dropped inside the diff, BAD.. Took the diff casing off and fished out the bolt. bolt now secured using threadlock, and silicon gasket seal.. I have the new casing , all nicely primed and painted.. and the gasket , looks like cork Now heres the question, when fitting the new casing. Clean the matting surface and fit the cork gasket. Do I need to use silicon sealant with this kind of gasket? What are the torque values for the bolts on the casing.? Any other advice would be appreciated. cheers
  2. I had a quick look this evening at , checked the wiring at the brake lights etc, (the previous owner had funny idea of wiring) Lots of scotch blocks, linking the high level brake lights. All seems ok, no loose conections, everything still working fine. Have to rewire that later.. Checked the earth wires on back of voltage gauge, seemed ok.. It was dark, so further investigation needed. Noticed that if you turn the indicators on, the voltage gauge, level dips in time with them. And fan on , it dips. brake it dips. So its looking like a earthing issue on the gauge, I guess. So I was wrong about just being a brake related issue. I am unsure about how the voltage gauge is wired have to trace it back. Is it possible to take a lead from the gauge to a good earth to check. Thanks for all the help
  3. Thanks western Well I did have the dash top off last weekend and the gauge binacle, moved slightly forward so I could do the wiper wheel boxes, so I have maybe loosened something. Cheers
  4. Hi Guys I have a defender 110 1989, with a voltage meter fitted in dash. Everything seems fine, but when you push the brake pedal the voltage gauge drops from half to a quarter. Now when you do this, the brake lights work as they should. All other lights seem to work ok. Does this with the engine running and engine off with ignition on. This cant be normal, does anyone have any ideas to where I should start looking for the problem. Any help would be great cheers
  5. Hi I was just looking at seat rails on internet site mudstuff It might be a solution Cheers B)

  7. Cheers Paul Hmm, I had a problem couple of months ago, the temperature gauge was edging up from half to 3/4 if I drove over 65. and generally was higher than normal, 1. I changed coolant, and thermostat, (Still hot) 2. changed temperature sender and checked wire (still hot) Then I looked at the back of radiator 50% of the fins where missing , rusting away.. funny looks OK from front, but when the radiator was removed the fins were falling off, Solution , change the radiator , refill coolant , things are fine now, running at half on the gauge. I would check several things before going on a long trip, I found this site, when I was checking my landy for my last 1000mile trip . diff 6000mile service Good luck Craig
  8. HI I have a Defender 110 CSW 200Tdi 1989, 145 000 miles, the 200tdi has been transplanted from a 1990 defender. I have 265/70R16 general grabbers at2 , for cruising speed, I get 60-75 without a problem, a litte noisy above 65mph and a bit scary above 70, but I drive mostly at 60mph, I like to listen for any *new* noises coming from the landy. At 60mph in 5th gear (on level road) I can floor it and I get quite a kick of acceration. So I would say that your landy is fine. And I like to watch people faces when they drive up to your bumper at 90, and suddenly have the impulse to over take you at all costs. Even if you are driving in a 40mph zone. Much saver cruising at 40mph with your higher driving position, so you can see the idiots far ahead. So much talk about 4x4 unsafe, I love driving my defender around at a slightly slower rate. If I wanted to drive fast I would have bought a wee sports car.
