I feel like this thread is going to cost me money, the search continues for one for the 110! -
Unplanned ARB Bumper Restoration
L19MUD replied to ThreePointFive's topic in Modified Vehicle Builds & Special Projects
Just checked my build thread and mine came in at 45kg but using bathroom scales with me holding it and weighing then weighing myself and knocking it off so probably not as accurate as Ross' measurement -
Used these today on some newly painted Defender 27mm nuts that had swollen slightly. Hardly marked the paint when using the 27.5mm side so is far less damaging than hammering on a 27mm or using the 28mm to torque up and pull them out of shape. They are also thinner walled than a normal 27mm impact. Yes £40 for 4 double sided sockets seems a lot but if you are using a 4 on multiple vehicles it seems worth the outlay. Nothing negative to say about them

Unplanned ARB Bumper Restoration

My new old stock ARB bumper came with indicators. I just bought new lenses which as you say are the same as a VW golf. Can take pictures of mine of that helps? Would love to find another one for the 110 rebuild -

Suzuki Jimny (JB74) Roadtest Review
L19MUD replied to Chicken Drumstick's topic in International Forum
This amazes me as being the reality if I am honest. Whilst I am fortunate enough to be able to keep a few vehicles on the road, if I sold them all and paid monthly I could put that same money towards something much much newer and flashier! I just could not handle the thought of not owning it myself, or if I lost my job or something similar being signed up to paying that amount out each month and no way of getting out of it. I tend to spend years owning the same vehicle and saving up for the next one, and then when I can afford to pay for it outright waiting another couple of years before I convince myself to part with the hard earned! -
Didn't know about these! Wonder if the do some for the L322
-
Agreed but you can't do that on other peoples cars or for every Land Rover that happens to pass through the workshop so this seemed like an ideal answer
-
I have tried putting L322 ones in a bucket of diesel overnight but a couple of years old they had still got worse
-
I thought this may be of interest! Nobody likes swollen nuts. The set includes sizes that will do the old Defender/Disco/RRC 27mm plus sizes for L322 RR etc. I have just bought a set, will report back on quality etc. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Welzh-Werkzeug-Wheel-Nut-Cap-Flip-Socket-Set-5-Piece-Impact-3107-WW-/174289967879?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

Thoughts and Musings on the Ineos Grenadier
L19MUD replied to Bowie69's topic in The New Ineos Grenadier
Lol, I guess that is the way with everything you can't please everyone as we all have different tastes. I love the look of both the old and the new Defender (leaving aside the purposes of both) but then I also like the look of most of the current stable of Land Rovers and the new Defender obviously fits in with them. I think the Grenadier looks really awkward. -
Soooo if all goes to plan........
L19MUD replied to Green200tdi's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Well I am going to throw a curve ball in here!! I fitted genuine Polybush red to my 200tdi 90 12-15 years ago. Reasons for doing so were because I had replaced some of the standard bushes more than once and I wanted the firmer bushes as I tow 3500kg a lot. Yes I think they might make the ride a little harsher but on a 90....it is questionable 100k miles later and I rebuilt the truck fully onto a new chassis. In that time I had replaced the panhard bushes once. The bushes I removed when I did the chassis showed very little wear or none at all but given it was all apart I replaced with new genuine polybush red again and figure I am good for another 100k miles. Plus removing all the Polybushes was a doddle compared to the hassle pressing the old ones out all those years ago -
Have a 25 ton press so that is no problem
-
Max of 5 degrees I would say - I think I am probably worrying about nothing! Will pull the cover off to reseal and take a look for anything obvious before I fill back up with oil I was thinking of the ATB - It seems that they reduce the amount of backlash in the drivetrain which would be nice
-
it was in 18 inches of fresh snow at the time so I was not going fast. Low box second gear making good progress for 20 feet or so then stopping and reversing to make sure I could retreat. I then hit a deeper bit which took the weight off the wheels as the snow was then supporting the chassis/axles and one wheel span, tried reverse but was the same so got the shovel out and cleared under the axles to get the weight back down to the ground and then successfully driven out. I mistakenly thought a wheel on the other side was spinning at the same time indicating diff lock was in but that was not the case

Thoughts and Musings on the Ineos Grenadier
L19MUD replied to Bowie69's topic in The New Ineos Grenadier
I think this is a really good summary and I agree with pretty much all of it. One thing missing I think is aesthetics Whilst the new Defender has some questionable design features like those silly boxes on the sides, overall I really like the look of it (Ignoring the fact it is more D5 than Defender). The Ineos in my opinion looks like an old Santana or Iveco Massif - a bit like a cheap Chinese knock off of the real thing. If I was going to spend £40k plus it would be nice if it did not look like a dogs dinner -
Whilst I might have shortened the life of it I am guessing normally this sort of damage is evident very soon after or during with a big bang! Wheels only spun for a few seconds before I realised only 1 wheel spinning and not 1 front and one back like I thought then the shovel came out. Makes it all the more impressive that it got so far down this snow blocked road with the diff lock out!!

Agreed on this - I will sort it on this box if it stays in. I am more concerned currently if this box is about to implode 😀 I agree what is on that sump plug is nothing to worry about and I strained the oil too, nothing in there and no metallic bits in it. Whilst there is some backlash in this box I think it may have been like this for a long time and I had not noticed as it was specifically driving over a very rutted lane at tick over that made it noticeable. If I had been in low second instead with some throttle applied I don't think it would have happened. I was in high range 2nd and then 1st at the time I think I will pull the 110 into the workshop and perform the same tests as I have done on the 90 to compare

What have you painted your galvanised chassis with?
L19MUD replied to reb78's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
T wash and 2 pack paint. I have someone who does them for me. 3 top coats. Have done 4 now. 2 only just done. 1 done 3 years ago but stores indoors. 1 been on road 9 months Not been on the road long enough to really tell but first signs promising and easy to touch up and wont flake like powder coat. My main reason was to have it look standard but not cause issues. The added protection is a bonus -
T box sump plug - when cleaning it off there was nothing big enough to feel. Oil has been in there approx 2-3k I would guess

OK have completed a few checks, all with the props on for now With gearbox in neutral I have about an 1/8th of a turn on both props indicating the diffs and splines etc have a normal amount of wear. Gearbox in gear and handbrake on and one wheel off the ground at the front I have another 1/8th of a turn at the front output of the transfer box. I can't find anything on the Ashcroft site to indicate if that is a problem. If cycling back and forth I can get it to make a distinctive clunk in the box which is what I was hearing off road. Dropped the oil and was pleased to see just over 2l of oil come out (not measured exactly yet) and nothing untoward in it. I will strain it later to check. The box is leaking from the main cover plate so will take that off and reseal. Is there anything I can visually inspect when I have that off? Front output does have a small amount of up and down play but not leaking. Not leaking from the rear output either Running 80/90 oil as recommended on the Ashcroft site I also did a quick check of the diff lock - it is not engaging as It will not drive with one wheel on a jack at the front. Could spinning up a wheel whilst stuck have accelerated my centre diff wear? Re the wailing like a banshee the Ashcrofts site suggests that is due to pattern gears not being crowned and interfering with the new cross drilled input so the only way that will disappear would be with a new gearset

Did you ever do this Doug? Pondering having a go myself or letting Ashcrofts do it
