  1. Not a solution to your problem but I have been keeping an eye on this thread over the past few days as I seem to be having the same problem. This morning was the first time I had to resort to jump starting off another car, and it started on the first turn of the key. I had some problems with the alternator early in the year but it seemed to right its self as i have had no starting problems since, until the cold weather came. Would be interested in hearing if you resolve the problem in any way.
  2. Thanks for the guide. Have found rear UJ on front prop shot. In process of replacing.
  3. Help/guidance wanted. I have a 1996 disco, 300tdi, and have suddenly started getting a 'judder' through the vehicle when accelerating. It appears to be intermittent possibly when loading the engine. It proves difficult to pin point but seems fine on initial acceleration and when up to speed but inbetween the 'jubber' starts. The engine seems to be running fine when standing and when increasing the revs, but does seem to be hot (could only just hold onto dip stick as so hot after 2 hour drive) , although the temp gauge does not show it. Any advice as to where to start to look would be much appreciated. steering, wheel bearings, prop shafts? etc. Cheers
  4. You say not too bad to change, is this the case if you have the required specialist tools, such as the flange restraint one, centralising peg tool etc, or can it be done with a standard tool kit, sockets, spanners etc.
  5. 1996 discovery. I have recently noticed a few more oil spots on my drive. On closer inspecion it appears to be originating from the rear differential where the pinion exits the diff case. Looking through the work shop manual there seems to be a seal in this location. Are these seals items that regulary go, and how easy are they to replace?
  6. Suddenly had the alternator start again. Thinking it was dud washed it down well with hose prior to taking it back to garage for repair. Jumped started next day ready to take it in and the rev counter moved and the battery light went off. Still took it to garage who looked over it and said it was most probably dirt etc on the brushes. Not surprising after mud bath had it in on weekend. They suggested a wading kit and shroud for alternator. Anyone got any pointers to what is actually required??
  7. cheers for that. I have checked the alternator and there does not appear to be much if any charge getting through. The other puzzling thing is that I first noticed the light on about 3 days ago and the disco still keeps starting and all electrics are working including lights etc. Thought the battery would have drained by now.
  8. I have recently noticed that my rev counter has stopped working and also the battery warning light has come on the dash. Is the warning light coming on linked with a potential damaged wire/connection as noted in the forum or does it sound like there is another problem, such as defunked alternator.
