I'm sure its not Jez - i'm merely debating if its nessecary, if we want it or if its even feasable.
I think some kind of assurance its been tested on critical componants would be good, i understand that its an expensive process but perhaps manufacturers of small volume parts should at least do what Si of X-Eng (hope you dont mind me using you as an example!) does and back up his new products with facts and figures which are supported by engineering principles and real world testing, which he is not worried about sharing - cearly a sign of a man who takes pride in his work and understands what he is doing.
That of couse leaves the problems of dodgy welds by people and other manufacturing issues - not sure how to overcome them!

With all this business about working on our own cars, making mods or fitting modified parts (as in not manufacturer standard fitment) is there a reason why we dont have rules demanding certification to avoid problems such as the broken trailing arms which are beign discussed.
Now i dont know the cost of the certification, but there are such services for BSI kitemarks for automotive products, or perhaps TUV certification....
Any thoughts? Should we insist products are tested, should it be limited to safety critical parts???

Is it necessary to cage a whole lenght of a 110, would a front cage be adequate enough ?I think it should provide a pivot and still ptotect the middle seat occupants. Maybe only having it on the front part would reduce the weight ?
Perfectly acceptable, you will always have a driver, but will you always have passengers??? Its just a case of thinking about your usage of the vehicle and then deciding if you really need the rear protection offered by a full cage.
Just make sure it has an internal hoop with braces if you go frontal only.

Stainless would be bad for various reasons - your best bet in my opinion is a mantec carrier, i had one and they are superbly built.

I thought 2 pack contained iso-cyanates and needed full respirator for spraying, how did you find the vapour masks?
-
How is your's coming along, Shaun did mention he had it the other night!!
-
Can we open a book - i know who my money is on...
-
Webasto thermotop or an Eberspacher D1LC would be where my money would go - they wor in different ways but both achieve the same goal of a nice warm vehicle.
-
I believe compomotive make 1 or 2.
-
Shox Dr - blueband is what the MSA require so it can't be that bad. I have a cage made using it by whitbread, and on my d-lander a very sexy cage made using clubman 500 by NOR
Nige - you know where you should go for it, your experience with the wings should tell you that. (me/shaun spoke about them/you briefly on the phone the other night!!!)
-
I will put money on it that rohtron isnt Sahun @ NOR , i know him very well and have regular contact with him in both work and personal stuff - its not him, like nige said, he doesnt do forums.

Cheers for all the info, tis muchly appreciated

What model did you buy defcol?
-
North Offroad are the dogs dangleys for quality cages.

Glad to hear you are ok as it looks nasty. However i doubt youll get salvage rights from that mess, itll be a cat B which means that a salvage place can only break for spares, itll never go on the road again and lets face it with no panels, bent chassis and untold other damage you are better off with a second hand replacement.

I wonder if Dave would be so kind as to post his thoughts here as i also have an auto box in the d-lander with one of his compushift systems but currently no cooler as it needs plumbing it and the standard one doest fit!!
-
Yes it is lots of work - gearbox, controller (compushift), cooler, pipework, tunnel, shift mechanism, trim etc etc. It also costs a lot too, just look at the price of a consol or compushift if you need a heart attack (that said i have a compushift)
-
Sorry Ryan, better to see it replaced than have a post in a few weeks saying your wheel fell off and the car ended up in a ditch, or worse.

Maximum "allowed" by LR is 2.
-
It says not to in all teh genuine LR manuals. I'll try and find a snippet...
-
Youll need a new hub - its not safe to replace more than 2, possibly 3 of the studs so if they are all chewed bin it and buy another.
-
Just looked at their website - bunch of anti's with their heads up their backsides, bring it on if they want to prosecute me for driving where i am legally allowed to, i'll take them to the cleaners.

It should be noted that the FEA packages in all of these CAD programs are very very average.....
Another one worth looking at is Autodesk Inventor, it is faster to learn than Solidworks, it also has some features which are very useful that Solid works doesnt have (on the other hand it is also missing some)
Care to quantify what is wrong with COSMOS FEA - you'll find it is superb actually. Also care to quantify why inventor is better than SW, the features are almost identical and i definatley dispuite the claims it is easier to learn.
My credentials are on this post (or another similar one) - care to share yours to back these claims?

Wing kits are a rip off from North Offroad's - I'd personally get a cage from NOR (i have on in my d-lander) as they are excellent cages, well built from quality material, but they obviously are not the cheapest.
Aftermarket product Certification??

I think the thing to remember is the X-eng products are engineered and tested - not certified.
The only thing stopping others from doing the same is lack of knowledge and lack of willingness to do so in the rush to make a quick buck rather than product a quality and safe product.
