  1. Just to close this topic - my issue was actually larger but simpler than expected.

Seems my fuel tank breather was missing a check valve, meaning that when the tank was full and temperatures rose it pushed diesel up the breather. This would have caused a leak on the floor had I not joined all breathers in a manifold so that I only had one breather running up my snorkel.

So what has been happening for 'some' time is that this diesel has seemingly been draining back down the breathers for the gearbox, transfer box, and axles and slowly filling them. It seems that this increased fluid level was forcing fluid out of areas which typically don't see this volume of oil(& diesel).

Fresh fluid changes all round, check valve installed, and I seem to be leak free.

Is there any lasting damage? Who knows...

Check the orifice size, as that is is used to tune the assistance given by the PAS system - smaller =heavier, if it wasn't obvious, as it is a flow restriction.

The P38 style pump is the same.

Good point Bowie - will see if I have any suitable drill bits to measure it. I've been running a discovery outlet with a lashed up high pressure pipe for a couple of years so it'll be interesting to see if the defender outlet does give a change in steering assist.

  3. Can you swap the high pressure union on a Defender PAS pump onto a Discovery PAS pump?

Seems that the internet can't make its mind up on this one, so here's the answer.

I've now got one of each, and yes, the union simply undoes (an impact will help) and can be swapped between pumps.

This might help someone who's doing a Td5 conversion.

Wonderful! Thank you, I didn´t see that. You are absolutely right.

So my recommendation is, just apply a small amount of breaking fluid to the PAS oil. There is a good chance to get it sealed for some time.

I used the brake fluid trick on my PAS pump some years ago and it's worked well!

  5. Thanks for everyone's input.

I'll watch the Brit. Rest. video and see how best to approach this.

@Sigi_H - fair point! I was just trying to consult the hive mind and see whether anyone looked at it and thought "that looks just like mine when I had x" as it looks like a very localised leak. I'll clean it up before I do anything else (even if it just gives me a cleaner bit to work with!!).

@vulcan bomber - I'll be in touch if required! Have a spare case which I could send down to you to keep me mobile.

@fmmv I'll find that thread too

Will report back - cheers all

  6. I wonder if anyone here can point me to a good (free) piece of software and a tutorial which would get me on my way towards modelling a part for 3D printing.

I have a pair of 110 second row door cards which are in reasonable condition apart from the section which covers the check strap which is totally destroyed (but I have enough of them left for measuring etc).

It seems to be that it would be possible to make a part which fits (bonded) to the inside of the card and fairly accurately replicates the missing part. Problem is I have no idea how to do this!!

Image shows the piece I'm talking about!Screenshot_20240224-144653.thumb.png.b2b9c89489d24e0aa9d20ad1741e503b.png

  7. I had a Td5 90 as my first car which I loved, and having not really driven much else I didn't mind the comforts of a more modern car.

I then had a couple of euroboxes, and now have a 110 which I ran as a 200tdi for a few years and have now converted to Td5 power. I really missed the drivability of the Td5 - it just has a bit more power and the ability to rev it means I find it easier to keep up with traffic. It's unmapped currently so has plenty more to give. I have a company car (Tesla... 😳) but find myself drawn to driving the 110 whenever possible, far more involved/interesting for a journey!

So I'd go for a Td5 personally, but definitely listen to the advice above about buying based on condition.

Depending on where you're based, there's bound to be someone on here who's local to you who'd be happy to come and look at vehicles with you.
