Hi all, Wonder if someone could help me out before i surrender to the local independent LR garage. I have a squealing bearing type noise thats only apparent when i accelerate. But not whilst stationary and giving it some gas. Also no noise when just letting the car run along with no accelerator depressed. - I have had both the props off and run with just front and just back to eliminate those. - Checked the wheel bearings, all seem ok - Both diffs sound OK - Removed handbrake drum to see if it had a stone in it (no such luck) I am thinking it has to be something transmission related but my knowledge is limited. Anyone got any ideas of what/how to check for any other culprits ? Thanks in advance. TPK

Hi All, Been fighting with a overheating problem for a while now ... Thought i rectified it by clearing an airlock in the coolant system but it seems to have come back now with this cold weather (which baffles me) I have done the Thermostat, Waterpump, radiator with a know good one. Cleared airlock, checked coolant .. but it still overheats. The thing is when it overheats the temp gauge goes up to just under the red block, then all of a sudden drops to just below mid again rapidly (which is what happened when i had an airlock) .. Another symptom is no heat from the heater system, gets warmish at best. This all happened after a day of not starting in the big freeze. It starts fine now and has no coolant leaks or anything. But i wonder if something froze in the system and then trying to start created another airlock ? Any ideas would be great Thanks in advance Stu

Hi all .. An update to this situation .. . I have changed the thermo (for gen LR one). Also changed the waterpump for a known good replacement, same with radiator (flushed through for about an hour in all directions with a hose). Changed thermo housing plug to a x-Eng one. Whilst doing this i noticed the alternator bearing had failed badly causing severe slack in the tension of the belt. This i thought could have been responsible for the dodgy temps as the belt would have been slipping on the pump pulley. So i changed the alternator to a known good one too .. Now ... I am still overheating, not quite as much as before but i am still getting the sudden rise and fall of the gauge. When the temp gauge is up the heater blows cold, and when in mornal half way point the heater is blowing hot ? Is this the sign of a head gasket problem or a coolant airlock ? I am a bit baffled and cheesed off to say the least ? Any pointers would be great ! Thanks Stu

Hi all .... As in the subject line. The other morning i flicked my lights on and all of a sudden they went off. I have full beam and side lights but no dipped normal beam. I am useless with electric fault finding. I have checked the fuses below the steering wheel and the relevant ones are ok. Can anyone shed any light on this for me or help me run through the way to troubleshoot ... Many thanks Stu

Hi All, Just picked up a cheap donor 300 TDI Disco ... The middle cylinder head stud (the ones that the rocker shaft slides down onto) has sheared due to someone overtightening it (no not me ) ... Has anyone replaced one of these, is it at all possible ? If so a part number and some advice would be great ! I looked at Les's head removal article in the tech section and see they are fixed into the head but cant see an obvious way of getting them out from the pics. Many thanks in advance... (and hoping its not a new head to get the engine going again) ... Stu Edit: Looking at Les's pic again i see the middle one is missing in the picture, so i assume they do come out ?

i got some of the xeon gas bulbs (i think) from ebay that fit the standard D1 bulb holes .. These are really bright and often get oncoming traffic letting me know this .... Stu

Thanks .... Jimmy can you elaborate at all what could have died ? I am not sure on this cos the temp gauge always reaches half way at the same point on my journey (i use the truck to commute everyday) and this is the first time i have noticed the high temp gauge in usual usage situation. This coupled with the squealing noise i thought it may be the water pump failing. No flow through the rad = overheating. What I am not sure about is whether the pump is a simple case of 'its works or it doesnt' or whether it can be working intermittently causing the temp gauge to rise until the pump starts pumping again .... Maybe someone can help enlighten me on this ? Thanks Bogmonster i will check the bearings over the weekend at some point. Is there anything else i should check as well ? Cheers Stu

Hi All, My 96' P reg 300tdi disco started to overheat the other day (15mile regular journey which usually causes no problems) .. The temp gauge flew up to the red then rapidly drop back down again, it did this a couple of times before i made it back home. I haven't driven it since this happened so thought i would pick your brains as to the problem. There is a chirping / squealing which i suspected to be the tensioner bearing, but now i am starting to think the waterpump has failed ? Is this a possibility or does anyone have any other ideas ? Is the Longranger pic still a full length Disco ? Looks short to me ?

I got a certificate with my scrapiron spacers with the tuv number on .. Hope this helps Stu
