  1. Good point, thanks Matt ... Elimination is the only way to get to the problem. TPK
  2. Hi Matt, I thought about this but wouldn't it still be squealin at say 2000rpm even if you weren't accelerating ? Thanks TPK
  3. Hi all, Wonder if someone could help me out before i surrender to the local independent LR garage. I have a squealing bearing type noise thats only apparent when i accelerate. But not whilst stationary and giving it some gas. Also no noise when just letting the car run along with no accelerator depressed. - I have had both the props off and run with just front and just back to eliminate those. - Checked the wheel bearings, all seem ok - Both diffs sound OK - Removed handbrake drum to see if it had a stone in it (no such luck) I am thinking it has to be something transmission related but my knowledge is limited. Anyone got any ideas of what/how to check for any other culprits ? Thanks in advance. TPK
  4. Hi All, Been fighting with a overheating problem for a while now ... Thought i rectified it by clearing an airlock in the coolant system but it seems to have come back now with this cold weather (which baffles me) I have done the Thermostat, Waterpump, radiator with a know good one. Cleared airlock, checked coolant .. but it still overheats. The thing is when it overheats the temp gauge goes up to just under the red block, then all of a sudden drops to just below mid again rapidly (which is what happened when i had an airlock) .. Another symptom is no heat from the heater system, gets warmish at best. This all happened after a day of not starting in the big freeze. It starts fine now and has no coolant leaks or anything. But i wonder if something froze in the system and then trying to start created another airlock ? Any ideas would be great Thanks in advance Stu
  5. Hi all .. An update to this situation .. . I have changed the thermo (for gen LR one). Also changed the waterpump for a known good replacement, same with radiator (flushed through for about an hour in all directions with a hose). Changed thermo housing plug to a x-Eng one. Whilst doing this i noticed the alternator bearing had failed badly causing severe slack in the tension of the belt. This i thought could have been responsible for the dodgy temps as the belt would have been slipping on the pump pulley. So i changed the alternator to a known good one too .. Now ... I am still overheating, not quite as much as before but i am still getting the sudden rise and fall of the gauge. When the temp gauge is up the heater blows cold, and when in mornal half way point the heater is blowing hot ? Is this the sign of a head gasket problem or a coolant airlock ? I am a bit baffled and cheesed off to say the least ? Any pointers would be great ! Thanks Stu
  6. Hi all .... As in the subject line. The other morning i flicked my lights on and all of a sudden they went off. I have full beam and side lights but no dipped normal beam. I am useless with electric fault finding. I have checked the fuses below the steering wheel and the relevant ones are ok. Can anyone shed any light on this for me or help me run through the way to troubleshoot ... Many thanks Stu
  7. Thanks Les .... I'll crack on and sort it now .. Stu
  8. Hi All, Just picked up a cheap donor 300 TDI Disco ... The middle cylinder head stud (the ones that the rocker shaft slides down onto) has sheared due to someone overtightening it (no not me ) ... Has anyone replaced one of these, is it at all possible ? If so a part number and some advice would be great ! I looked at Les's head removal article in the tech section and see they are fixed into the head but cant see an obvious way of getting them out from the pics. Many thanks in advance... (and hoping its not a new head to get the engine going again) ... Stu Edit: Looking at Les's pic again i see the middle one is missing in the picture, so i assume they do come out ?
  9. Thanks Jimmy .. good advice .. i will give this a go over the weekend ... Thanks again Stu
  10. i got some of the xeon gas bulbs (i think) from ebay that fit the standard D1 bulb holes .. These are really bright and often get oncoming traffic letting me know this .... Stu
  11. Thanks .... Jimmy can you elaborate at all what could have died ? I am not sure on this cos the temp gauge always reaches half way at the same point on my journey (i use the truck to commute everyday) and this is the first time i have noticed the high temp gauge in usual usage situation. This coupled with the squealing noise i thought it may be the water pump failing. No flow through the rad = overheating. What I am not sure about is whether the pump is a simple case of 'its works or it doesnt' or whether it can be working intermittently causing the temp gauge to rise until the pump starts pumping again .... Maybe someone can help enlighten me on this ? Thanks Bogmonster i will check the bearings over the weekend at some point. Is there anything else i should check as well ? Cheers Stu
  12. Hi All, My 96' P reg 300tdi disco started to overheat the other day (15mile regular journey which usually causes no problems) .. The temp gauge flew up to the red then rapidly drop back down again, it did this a couple of times before i made it back home. I haven't driven it since this happened so thought i would pick your brains as to the problem. There is a chirping / squealing which i suspected to be the tensioner bearing, but now i am starting to think the waterpump has failed ? Is this a possibility or does anyone have any other ideas ? Thanks in advance Stu
  13. Is the Longranger pic still a full length Disco ? Looks short to me ?
  14. I got a certificate with my scrapiron spacers with the tuv number on .. Hope this helps Stu
  15. I have seen a disco with tree-fenders (tube types) bolted onto the body work at the top above the gutter .. looked nice couple with tubular rock slider sills Think it was a custom jobbie or a a defender set bolted up there. Dont know where they came from though. Stu
  16. I thought it was cold related as it had been sat there fine for a while .. only on this paticular night had it gone flat .. The car is privately parked so wouldn't have been tampered with. Any other ideas relating to the cold ? Thanks Stu
  17. Hi, I haven't been using my discovery fitted with 33"x12.50x15 BFG muds. On saturday night /sunday morning we had a hard frost. when going out to check the truck it had a completely flat tyre .. Can the cold do this ? expanding / contracting air in cold ? Worsening a split of slow puncture etc ? Thanks in advance Stu
  18. Hi All, After reading ... > ghettofabulous intercooler installation - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=7909 I decided to fit a Saab 9000 intercooler in my disco .. Before anyone does the same .. Read on ... The thing is huge .. To get it in i had to move the radiator back 2" and up 1" onto the chassis tubes that the steering arm is bolted through. So after lots of fettling, swearing and bracket fabrication the rad was moved . I also had to remove the bit of bodywork that the aircon condenser would sit it. and fiddle with the whole lot so the bonnet would close. . . To say it was a close fit would be an understatement ... I am well happy with the results it pulls so much better through 1700 - 3000 rpm .. and along with a new turbo and manifold the air flow / boost has never been better. The project cost me £15.00 for the cooler and about 10hours of my time on the weekend.... Got some pics of the install which i will post when i find my usb lead .. TPK
  19. Hi All, Wanting to replace my very tired fin-less rad in the disco .. Anyone have any sources of rad suppliers that are cheaper than £100 ? The £100 ones are from island4x4 which are ally and plastic .. original ones are all metal ? Anyone know if these are ok ? Thanks in advance Stu

Thanks Ivan ... Off to find me a turbo .. Thanks all TPK

    Turbos

Thanks BM .. Thats good news1 Can anyone 100% confirm that the turbo/manifold is interchangeable before i start legging it around the southwest to find one ... Thanks in advance TPK

    Turbos

Hi All, I need to get a new turbo unit for my 300TDI and I am not sure whether the recon engine fitted previous to me buying is from a defender or a discovery. A couple of questions: 1. Are the turbo units / manifolds different on the two engines 2. How do i identify the engine as a disco or a defender Thanks in advance TPK
  23. Hi, I am running these .. you will need at least a 2" lift .. Major cutting of arches and bodywork, extended bump stops, Spacers / big offset wheels to maintain any sort of turning circle. Your gearing will also be shot all over the place and you'll be revving the pantys off of it to maintain speed up long gradients. But for off-roading they are great .. lots of rubber. I had a head on collision with an escort, directly hit my passenger tyre. It stayed intact on the rim and just bounced me up onto the bonnet of the escort. Love them tyres ! I'll try to find a pic ... TPK
  24. Hi All, I seem to have some gremlins in my electrics. A few things lately have stopped working altogether: 1. Sony CD player (never had problems before) 2. 5amp CB Radio fuse keeps blowing (inline) 3. Washer bottle pump ceased working. This was replaced a week ago for an MOT but has now just gone again ! Anyone got any ideas ? I know "sweet FA" about electrics and need to get this all sorted out .. especially the washers .. Could it be a bad earth or something ? Many thanks in advance TPK
  25. Les, The steering was wandering quite a bit .. but the bushes in the PH rod are quite new ... It was the bolt that had play in the axle locating bracket. I am quite convinced i need to get my tyres balanced as well .. But compared to what it was like .. Its a 100% improvement just tightening up that bolt. I'll let you know the outcome of the tyre balancing .. Got to get my MOT first .. 11:30 this morning .. wish me luck TPK
