  1. Well from the standard of work so far it looks like its going to be something special, great thread to follow. Thanks Davie
  2. The 4.6 is an overboared 3.5, the block can crack causing the liner to slip that is why there is the top hat mod. Also heard that the 4.6 and the 4.0 block can become porous. Could be wrong but think the SD1 vitesse 3.5 had a stiffened block, some one on hear will know. Davie
  3. Get stuck in with a crow bar, its plastic so it will break out without damage to anything else, I did this with 1 of mine when I replaced with coils. Anyway good luck. Davie
  4. Hi guys, have an annoying problem for the last few months, my srs airbag light comes on and stays on unless I do a journey of 30 - 40 miles, then it goes out and will stay out for a few days only to return and stay on when using for short journeys. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as electrics are not my strong point. Going to get her up on my mates ramp next week to waxoyl the bottom and service her before she gets treated to new boots. Cheers Davie 97 "P" 2.5 TD (Met Red) on coils Alfa GT
  5. Thanks for that Rob, they look like a reasonable price too, should get a set for around £500, was thinking about going to a 60 profile as it would fill the arches a bit better as my P38 has coils, don,t think that should comprimise the ride, unless anybody can think of any reason not to. Cheers Davie
  6. Hi guys, had been offered a set of wheels with cooper mud and snow tyres fitted from a 2006 disco for my 97 p38 2.5td auto but the nut size of the wheel was different so instead of the extra cost of new wheel nuts aswell as the rims and tyres have decided to fit new tyres. My wheels are 255 x 55 x 18, I have been happy with the dunlop AT2 tyres on my pajero but have been told that the RR can wander quite badly with the wrong tyres. I want to have decent road handling aswell as decent capability in the snow as I live in the north of Scotland. Any recomendations would be great or has anyone tried the dunlops on a RR, my mate has toyo on his ML and he thinks they are good in all conditions.
  7. Oh great, just fitted new fan belt pulleys and viscous fan from Britpart, will have to keep an eye on them Cheers Davie 2.5 td P38
  8. Hi guys, got a rattle, came very sudden and sounded like timing chain (BMW 2.5). On investigation I found that the fan was seized and the idler and tensioner pulley for the fan belt were a little noisy. Started engine and ran without fan belt for a couple of minutes and the rattling noise is gone so will be fitting new fan, fan belt and pulleys tomorrow. Also been offered a nice set of Disco wheels with new mud and snow tyres fitted the rims are 17" as opposed to 18" but with 70 profile tyres giving a slightly bigger rolling diameter than the originals but with 235 instead of 255. Will this affect the handling. By the way the inside of the rim to the inside hub is the same as the originals-7", hoping it will soften the ride slightly as the coil conversion is a little hard but was well worth it and would defnatly do it again. Cheers Davie
  9. Ok have you used a flush, how clean is the coolant after running, I would drop all the coolant, flush out the radiator, flush the block, refill, put the front up on ramps then run with the cap off for at least 20 mins keeping an eye on the level and the temp. This is a standard procedure for Pajero/Shogun so I would try it on the RR and see if it helps. Let us know how you get on Davie
  10. Hi guys, got her through her MOT, drivers door electrics was a broken wire that I found when tracing the loom back to the BeCM it was the purple/black wire & ABS light problem solved when I cleaned the corrosion from the front sensor rings. Everything now working but not too happy about the ride height since fitting the coils, she just seems to sit a bit too high for my liking although it is the same as my mates and he's converted his aswell. Must say though that she drives just fine and handles pretty well considering her bulk, its positivly hot hatch compared to my 2.5 Pajero, lets hope she is as reliable. The only failure in the MOT was that the nearside inner sill needed a patch welded, so I took her away & cleaned up both sills which were good except the patch that had to go in the nearside sill so patched it and that was that. Sorry to ramble on but one last comment is that the mot station said that for her age she was in good condition so the waxol will be out next time home. Cheers Davie
  11. Solved, eventully got time to trace the loom back to the BeCM, found a break in the purple/black wire under the carpet, everything now working. Cheers Davie
  12. changed the outstation but did not solve the problem, getting power as when unplugging the outstation the other 3 door locks locked & can hear a clicking from the outstation when trying the door mirror. Any advice would be gratfully recieved. Cheers Davie
  13. OK, think I found the culprit, looks like the door outstation, will replace & report back. Why oh why do they need to make circuits so complicated plus the outstation would be better out of the door where it is subjected to less shock. Cheers Davie
  14. Hi Guys, got a replacement switch panel for the windows, mirrors & sunroof as none worked. The problem now is that they all work except for the drivers door window & mirror. Also when unlocking the car all the doors unlock with the fob except the drivers door which needs to use the key. So basically nothing electrical in the drivers door works. I know I will need to remove the interior panel and it might become self evidant but hoping somebody comes up with some ideas first or has solved this problem before. Cheers & all the best Davie
  15. Hi Clive, lots of company's doing the kits so I cannot imagine why it would be illegal, just about every other 4 x 4 I know uses coils so they would be hit by the same problem. I know they are designed this way but the market is there cause once fitted no more air leaks or EAS ECU problems. Just makes life simple I suppose, spoke to a mate who just got home today & he changed his to coils, his insurance did not change as they were happy as he fitted a recognised kit. When ordering from Paddock they told me that they sell a lot of kits even though they do compressors & air suspension parts aswell. Also spoke to a local mechanic who does MOTs & he thought I would be mad to keep the EAS so wont have a problem at the MOT. Lastly it is personnel preferance & I fully understand why some want to retain the EAS as it gives them a superior ride but for me I just want to keep it simple especially as it wont be doing high speed dashes down motorways. Happy motoring Davie
  16. OK found the problem, bad earth at BeCM. All right now, spoke to a guy who did this to his springs and had no problems but not going to rush it as dont intend to put it on the road till May, want to get some more points of view before doing it, might be better taking off each spring in turn to do. Cheers Davie
  17. Thanks guys, will make up 2 jump leads for the EAS ECU & give it a go tomorrow, invaluble info much appriciated. The RR is a nice vehicle but overloaded with ECUs BeCM & god knows what else. Anyway going to take my time & get it all sorted right before I put it back on the road, the Pajero is reliable, the RR more civilised. Quick question- I think it is riding too high with coils so thought about heating each spring at a localised point to see if I can drop it about 2", anybody done this or got any other ideas. Cheers Davie
  18. Thanks Dave, my mate had the same thought so tried the computer stalk but the buttons seem broken, I have not recieved the handbook yet but have been promised it as the last owner misplaced it but said I would get it when found. (Ha Ha) Will see my other mate tommorow, he is in the trade so hopefully will know what to do, I was just worried I had disturbed something when I changed out the suspension as I am a complete moron with electronics was imagining the worst. Thanks for the reply Davie
  19. Hi Guys, I am getting a warning on the dash readout of max speed 35 mph, the performance has not been comprimised, have just changed out the suspension to coils & have an ABS light on but I know that is one of the sensors. Would be appreciated if anyone could cast some light on the subject for me. Also could anyone reccomend a workshop manual for the P38 TD as I can't find one. Regards Davie
  20. Hi Guys, OK got the coil springs fitted today, straight forward job. One air bag came out in 2 pieces (the bonding on the cap to the bladder had unstuck) so will replace that & repair the compressor for storage incase I change it back. Anyway the RR drives quite nicely & as no motorways in the north of scotland should not be a problem with high speed cruising. The only thing is it looks a touch high so was thinking of fitting 18 x 255 x 60 instead of the 55s to see if it fills the arch a bit better, I know its minimal but would only need very little to change the look. Oh by the way the air bag that failed was an aftermarket item the other three are genuine LR Dunlop bags that show no sign of degradation. So would be thinking hard about fitting critical aftermarket items. The switch panel for the Electric windows is goosed so getting one from a breaker for £80 delivered and with 3 month warranty. OK rambled on enough. Cheers Davie 2.5TD 97 RR 2.5 TD LWB 92 Pajero Alfa GT
  21. Ok guys going to hedge my bets, still going to fit the coils, but as the compressor is less than a year old am going to rebuild the compressor, buy 2 new air bags as the other 2 are less than a year old & refurbish anything else on the system, then I am going to store it incase I decide to change it back. Makes sense I think. Cheers Davie
  22. Ok went onto my other forum as I have a Pajero aswell, couple of guys have P38s and they told me that the centre control panel is a common fault and are pretty confidant that its the problem so will try and get one from the uk breakers site after my mate has tried it on his first just to confirm before spending money. I hope it is as it would be a nice quick fix. Thanks from Davie
  23. Thanks David, will browse through that info tonight, my mate is going to take the panel to a garage he knows to try it on another vehicle to see if the panel is at fault, suspect that it is as nothing on it works even the light. Can't see any obvious damage to the panel but we will see. If it is I will see if I can pick one up from a breakers as I would imagine it would cost a fortune. The only other thing is the warning text on the dash tells that each window & the sunroof is not set whatever that maens. Cheers Davie
