  1. Yello all Used to frequent here as a Disco owner many moons ago, had her for 4 years then sold her to buy a Jag X Type so I was cast out! (just kidding I went off and did some other stuff for a while) but that recently blew up.... ...after much searching, crunching of numbers and messing about I settled on a 2015 Defender 90 XS Station Wagon which I drove off the forecourt at Lakeland Land Rover in Coniston (300 miles from my home!) on Saturday 22 August. Now a proud owner - and I'm back here to share the fun! Forgot how they had a turning circle the size of Siberia and I'm trying to get used to going round corners a little more slowly....but man it's good to be back in the saddle! Pictures to follow when it's not dark out. Cheers all!
  2. It could be yeah, but it seems to crank and start fine. I venture that it might be a duff glow plug, a clogged injector, split air hose or an air leak somewhere...I need to do some tests and eliminate those areas. I highly suspect a vacuum leak somewhere (at least I bloody hope it's that because a starter motor will make my wallet cry) It does seem to be marginally better in warmer weather and there aren't any problems when it's running along or coming to idle at junctions etc, only just after initial firing of the engine...quite bizarre. I'll let you all know what I discover.
  3. Hi all, This (in the interests of transparency) is related to the car i'm trying to sell and is in the interests of fixing it before I sell it! http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=83977 < thread about the car here When she starts up, there's a bit of a hesitation sometimes, and it takes a few cranks to get her going, but once it fires there's no plumes of smoke or any problems like that, just a little grumbly - I found that the idle adjuster on the throttle sometimes loosens itself over time and twisting that one turn or so sorts it out, but it still has a bit of a struggle when cold starting. Once the engine is warm, there are no problems - I'm led to believe this might be a glow plug problem? Other diagnostics show no problems with oil in the water or vice versa (oil was changed about 2-3 weeks ago and was fine, nice and black!), only thing i haven't done is check the voltage across the glow plugs. Any advice appreciated, want to get this fixed sharpish so I can tidy her up for sale or swap. Cheers all A
  4. http://www.swapz.co.uk/swapz/3364742/Land_Rover_Discovery_200tdi_2_5_Turbo_Diesel_7_seats_/ 1992 K-Reg Disco, 168k or thereabouts, metallic green,2.5 turbo diesel. *THINKING* of selling but not in a huge rush as I can afford to wait for the right thing to come along - PM me with offers if you're interested. You know what they're worth - the full list of stuff replaced is; alternator, radiator, front shocks (pro comp) and springs and associated parts, water pump, cambelt, pulleys, all associated gaskets, front bushes, track rod ends, all wheel bearings, all brake discs, rear cone seal, regularly changed diff oil gearbox and xfer box oil, well looked after, never off roaded, never towed, 100% original factory spec not fiddled with or modified in any way...around £1200 mark would be ideal. Not in a rush to get rid of it either. Happy to provide detailed photographs of all these replaced items along with receipts. (deep breath......) Been my daily driver for something like 4ish years, bought it from a chap over Malvern way. It's got a bit of corrosion/rust showing in the usual places, but it's solid for now. Boot floor was ok last time I checked, rear X member ok, rear arches starting to show signs of needing attention, there is a bit of a bad section between the rear bumper and the rear X member but it's not structural (2 independent opinions confirm this). OH - and the front bumper I resprayed myself and it looked great when I did it but I didn't use acid etch primer D'OH! so i'ts starting to corrode again, HOWEVER this can be sorted easily as the front bumper can be removed on this one in about 15 mins flat. No stereo/radio but I have the working unit that was in here you just need to plug it back in - i never use it, but it works. One problem has arisen but I'm going to fix it imminently - sometimes on startup, it hesitates/bit lumpy but I think this is just a dirty/duff glow plug so I'm about to test/replace them - either way the fault will be fixed, happy to discuss in more detail or show you if you wanted to have a look. (any tips on what this might be welcome btw) Insured on a classic policy and it's an UNMOLESTED ORIGINAL example of an early 90's Discovery. EDIT: So it has got some minor 'mods' but only uprated brake discs, front shocks, bushes and some stickers on the back...everything else is genuine LR parts - oh and I don't use Britpart either unless I can avoid it.....!! Ask any questions, inspection welcome. I'm ideally looking for £1k+ if at all possible, or I'll consider a direct swap for something smaller and *sigh* more boring like a Mondeo, Fiesta, Focus, etc. Like I say, happy to have a conversation and kick about a few figures and I'm an honest transparent guy, plus been on these forums a while and got loads of useful info here so not out to rip anyone off.....anyway, I'll shut up now...let me know what you guys reckon.
  5. Wiring diagrams are in the back of the Haynes manual.
  6. dont see how having manufactured holes in a gasket helps with overheating.... I'd be looking at coolant, thermostat, rad, water pump, watch for leaks of oil and water underneath, change your oil and keep a close eye on it, keep an eye on the water level too. If either is going down you might have a cracked block but you'd know about it because either you'd have mayonnaise on your oil filler cap or dipstick, or you'd be pissing oil out of somewhere. Check the water and the oil, is my advice. If you're worried about the head and gaskets, change 'em.
  7. Surely if you position the snorkel on the body of the car where it is likely to be fixed, then the location of where you need to cut the hole will make itself apparent???
  8. Yes, apologies for hijacking the thread harry.
  9. Hello happy campers! I've got a similar problem but with my reversing lights! I was filling up with fuel the other night and my girlfriend pointed out that my reversing lights weren't coming on. I figured get some new bulbs. Off to Halfords I trot. I just put them in, both sides, changed it all and checked all of the lighting fuses. All fine. Checked to see if they were working with my dear mother behind me - nowt. No lights coming on. So the fuse isn't popped, and the bulbs are all good....what else could it be? Have I missed some critical piece of information? Help welcome (I'm awful with electrics)
  10. This is what I was thinking (Look carefully in the middle of the dash above the centre console!) Dont know what's behind there or how easy it would be to fit them in. Any ideas? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2681/4473642889_9fe3f7eeab_o.jpg
  11. Awight, I had this crazy idea of buying some gauges from somebody breaking a Mitsubishi Pajero (you know, the ones in the middle of the dash - Compass, temp etc). I wanted to either stick them on in the original housing although the colours may not match, or put them in somewhere else. Anyone got any experience of adding extra gauges? Where could I put them? How easy is it to wire them in? Anyone got a Pajero with experience of these readouts? I think it would add a quirky edge to the car if it was done properly. Just need to find a place to put them, and then work out how to make a custom dash enclosure and wire them in. Thoughts welcome! (even if you think it would be totally gay)
  12. If you still have the handbook that came with the car, all of the measures for everything are listed in there.
  13. has set their status, but it's a secret

  14. Ok James, you're officially a massive spreadsheet geek! But if you get it working and you're looking at flogging a couple of barrels, I'd happily furnish you with some purple beer tokens. or we could come up with some kind of barter arrangement. Being brutally honest, bunnies I'm not worried about, there's millions of 'em round here and I think the farmers shotgun is more of a threat than my Disco plodding along the lanes, no matter what I run it on! I will try the veg oil route once it's warmer - I take it we're talking sort of early June to mid September? By the winter James will have plenty of BD to go round, won't you fella? *GRIN*
  15. I have the Haynes. Got it from Halfords for £20 :-P I would say I'd copy you a page and send it, but that would be a breach of copyright law and I'm sure against forum rules *ahem*
  16. Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah it's certainly attractive for the savings, but I'm wary of the implications of destroying my engine! I did have reservations about making my own biodiesel, yes. I did kind of think that, for all the claims that it's green and wonderful and skipping through a flowery meadow and not hurting the little bunnies....what do you do with the highly toxic by-products? When you're done you're left with a bucket of glycerine and loads of waste materials - you can't chuck this stuff down the drain and claim to be green!!! My main motivation is price, because lets face it, if diesel was cheap I wouldn't even consider running it on anything else. With duty set to go up with this weeks budget, I'm interested in finding ways of making motoring cheaper. I have heard the argument that you can put in some veg oil, along with some white spirit, and cut that mixture with normal diesel - is that right? It seems daft to me though because surely when veg oil gets into your cylinders it's too thick to make a fine mist from the injectors and you end up with gunk on the insides of your cylinders? I've heard claims that it burns cleaner and cleans out your valves and cylinders - but isn't that what Redex does?? Hmmmm perhaps just stick to Diesel!
  17. Just re-read your post again and you made no mention of him replacing the fuel filter - might help if it had been blocked!! Also, what was he running it on? Straight diesel or mickey mouse fuels? Some will clog fuel lines, filters, injectors (veg oil, crappy biodiesels). And, because the fuel pump is whirring, doesn't necessarily mean its pumping fuel anywhere, there could be something broken inside it. I'd replace. sorry for the double post, but hope it helps.
  18. Hey, sorry to hear about your woes. I know it's a different car but it might help - I once had a BMW 540i V8 (beast!) but when I first got it, there was a fuelling problem. I started at the front, and check all the hoses and pipes to the engine, and all the ancillary bits up there, traced the fuel line back and replaced the filter which was near the rear axle, and then finally checked the fuel sender unit in the boot - turned out that in a BMW the pump and sender unit were paired but separable. I had to buy a new fuel pump from BMW and replace the part that actually sat in the tank. I don't know if it's the same on a TD5, but I'd certainly be inclined to make sure the fuel pump is working, then check the sedimenter and the fuel filter - might as well replace them anyway because they're not expensive, and then as you say check all the hoses. Only other thing I can suggest is to try and reset the ECU since iirc the TD5 is controlled by an engine management system. It might be that the injection isn't having a good time and might need a fettle, however you should be able to tell where the problem lies by tracing it from one end of the system to the other to make sure fuel delivery is happening. If it is but you're having no luck, perhaps check glow plug and injectors? Beyond that I'm stumped, but if it were my own vehicle I would certainly put my money on a duff fuel pump, or a blocked sedimenter or filter.
  19. Afternooon! Anyone know of a producer of BioDiesel for a reasonable price? I've been researching it and thought about making some, but I don't have the space for allowing it to settle and wash etc. Does anybody know of a place where I can get some in reasonable quantities (circa 200L) ? Looking at under £1 per litre ideally, not sure if that's realistic or not. Does anybody know of anywhere? Or does anybody currently run on it? Cheers A
  20. Hi, not had any experience of changing, but I have the same sound from mine. Groans when steering - I figured it just needed some grease on the steering components, and my mate (Paradigm Shift, I believe is on here?) reckoned it might be the steering rack and column requiring a bit of careful attention. Would be interesting to find out whether it is the PAS pump though as I may need one as well! Mine only occurs when at low speeds, low revs, turning corners, like in a 3 point turn, or when the vehicle is stationary. Will let you boys know if anything else becomes apparent.
  21. HAHA! Shhhh! Don't tell anyone! Anyway the DOC gave me a free sticker so nyer! Haha. Thanks for the warm welcome guys, looking forward to many adventures.
  22. Good evening everyone Just saying hello, I'm new here. My names Al, screen name Chromofoam as you can see. Based in North Herts/South Beds.
