  1. Not quite, Allmakes 4x4. But that said, it could have been made by anyone. It'll be interesting to see how the repacement gets on, which is also a Allmakes part. The local company that I use advised me to a genuine tensioner as the pattern bits aren't too sharp. Didn't say the same for the belts though.
  2. We checked that everthing spun freely during the initial 'get me home' repair, don't recall anything being tight. With regards to the charge light, this is the first time this has been lit while the engine has been running.
  3. Thanks for all the replies, tonight I have replaced the tensioner and installed a new belt with new items to see if this resolves the problem. Fingers crossed. One further question though, does anyone know what the tensioner to block bolt torque settings should be? Thanks Tom
  4. Hi All, Tonight on the way home I had the charge light come on the dash of my TD5 110 County, thinking that either my alternator or aux / fan belt had snapped I pulled into a Little Chef car park which was only a few minutes away. The heavy steering soon pointed out that there was an issue with the belt. Lucky for me, I had the old belt, which was changed 3 months or so ago in the back, but no tools. Calling one of my mates to give me a hand and we had the old belt on, however during this a few questions were raised. 1. Why has the belt been chewed up after only a few months (photo attached) 2. The tensioner bolt has worked loose - not to the point that it was about to drop off, but it was loose. Does this usually happen being left-hand thread, or perhaps its not related to this issue with the belt at all? On point 1, it’s worth mentioning that my power steering pump has made noise (which have been described as a whale mating call) since I've owned the 110 (just over a year) when turning the steering wheel. This is more noticeable at slower speeds rather then faster, but I would have said that this has been getting slowly worse. Could this be related to the belt chewing up? I have been resisting the £150 for a new pump, but if this is the cause perhaps I should bite the bullet? Sometimes when turning the engine off the belt squeals slightly as well, but this isn't every time. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom
  5. Thanks for your reply. I have seen the replacement procedure in the tech archive, but I was more wondering whats more involved - replacing the cross member with extensions or without. I wonder why LR make a replacement cross member only without extensions. Tom
  6. Hi All, Having just purchased a Defender 110 1999 TD5, there are a few areas on the vehicle that require attention. One of these areas is the rear cross member and although it seems as though most of the cross member is sound, there are a few areas which are not. I have been along the length of the cross member and have knocked with a handle of a screwdriver and the main areas that sound as though I am tapping a tin can in areas are to the outside of the jacking points on the cross member, the O/S being the worse (as can be seen in the photos) The question I have is what do I do about it? Cut out the rot and weld in a new piece of 3mm sheet or weld a patch over the top? Replace the whole rear cross member, I have seen a company selling genuine TD5 cross members (without extensions) for £95, although it is mentioned that these are for a TD5 2002 and on model, but these can be adapted to fit. Replace the whole cross member with a new pattern part with the extensions... are the horror stories about these true on the most part or is it the case where you only hear about the bad ones? Has anyone else on here come up with this challenge in the past? I know that it’s impossible to give an accurate opinion without looking at the vehicle, but any points of view would be appreciated. Thanks Tom
  7. Having recently moved from a 300tdi Disco to a TD5 Defender, I have got over some of the culture shock of driving the Defender but I was wondering at what approx. speed I should be changing up through the gears? I reason why I ask is that if I'm doing say just over 30mph in 4th, its fine when I'm accelerating, but say I ease of the throttle a little to steady my speed a small amount of kangaroo juice is added... almost seems that I'm going to slow for the gear. In 3rd the engine sounds as though I need to change up, or is this just the TD5 and I need to get used to it and give it a little more welly? Thanks Tom
  8. Hi All! This is my first post on the forum, and probably many will follow. I have been driving a 300tdi Discovery around for the last 4 years, and due to various things going wrong and the vehicle getting a little long in the tooth, yesterday I took the plunge and purchased a 1999 td5 110 CSW! The price was right as there are a few areas that need attention on the vehicle (all the normal things as well as some internal and external issues) The first two, fairly minor issues in comparison to others that I want to sort, but its a start. 1. The N/S vent control vent plastic handle has been broken off, is this plastic handle available as a replacement part or do I need to replace the whole leaver etc? 2. The rear O/S passenger door won't open. I understand that this is a common-ish problem and we found the a bit of bashing the door would open (the problem was lifting the lock handle up) but we then struggled to close it again. Is there a specific part that needs a squirt of WD-40 to resolve? Thanks Tcanact
