  1. Does anyone know a decent supplier of sealed rivets, that might be able to do both dome head and countersunk varieties?
  2. That probably sounds like a stupid question to open with, but I'm after suggestions. I'm looking into wiring up my hybrid. I have the complete wiring loom out of the '92 Rangie that I've got the engine and autobox from, and it already has most things (and a lot more than I'm ever going to need - eg leccy windows, abs, air suspension, heated screens, and a whole bunch of other stuff). So while the loom is accessible, what other things would you incorporate into it now, rather than when it's all in the car? Heated mirrors, interior lights? Should I keep it simple or go the whole hog? All suggestions welcome!
  3. Put it this way....... If your V5 says that you have 3 seats (or 2 and a cubby box), then you fit some more and go trotting off down the road and have an accident with 4 people in the car........ I know what I'd want to do to that person if (God forbid) they hit me!!! I was more thinking of having it tested as say a 2 seat vehicle, then putting more in the back, and informing DVLA in order to get the V5 changed to be correct. I mean, you could do that to a hard top 90 for instance, put 2 bench seats in the back and hey presto you've gone from 3 seats to 7. I'm just not sure whether they would insist on an IVA retest. Another thing to put on the list of things to ask the chaps at VOSA!
  4. Does anyone know, if I have a vehicle tested as a commercial, could I then put seats in the back at a later date, or would that require a re-test? Cheers Dees
  5. Thatnks for the replies. I think I will probably look at mounting the range rover filter transversely across the back of the block (over the bell housing) and shortening the trumpet air intake to keep the overalll length down. It should fit then! I had been thinking along the lines of a K&N type filter, but it seems like they aren't favoured! Cheers Dunc
  6. The reason for the change is I'm fitting the 4.2 into my hybrid, and it doesn't fit in the same position as in the range rover. There is I think sufficient space to fit it around the back of the block in front of the bulkhead, but I'm not sure about the breathing back there. So, I was wondering what the options for a smaller filter were. Cheers for the replies
  7. Can anyone recommend a good replacement air filter for a 4.2 V8 to replace the hoooge range rover standard one? Cheers
  8. Thanks for the replies, folks. Obviously I'll have to talk to my local VOSA office to get the definitive answer that's acceptable to the people that might be doing any inspection, but it does seem like it is possible. However, I do like the idea of the fitting it after any IVA exam! I'm also struggling with the idea of how to lay in a filler pipe to a pair of under wing tanks, forward of the rear wheels (kinda like a Series filler, but in the rear tub). I'm thinking that this should be ok as long as it is boxed in as well.. Thoughts?
  9. Hi folks, A quick question regarding IVAs for you all. Now I'm getting on wih my hybrid again after a small hiatus, I'm turning my attention to the fuel system. The IVA manual states that fuel tanks etc should be separate from the passenger compartment. Does anyone know whether this would prohibit the fitment of an LPG tank in the rear tub behind the rear bulkhead, if it was boxed in? Cheers in advance Dees
  10. Hi folks. Having shoehorned a 4.2 V8 into my project hybrid, I'm now at the stage of piping it all in. Obviously, the Rangie radiator with integral oil coolers for engine and transmission doesn't fit, so I'm using a standard rad (defender V8, I believe) and looking to fit 'proper' oil coolers. Can anyone tell me what sort of size I should be looking at? I've no idea how hot engine and transmission oils get. Can anyone advise? Also, while I'm thinking about it, what's the best bottom hose to use to fit up to the plastic expansion tank - I think the consensus on here seemed to be defender 200TDi bottom hose would do the job? Cheers, Dunc
  11. But the chassis has been modified, (landy mounts, cut down at the back end), so irrespective of whether I've used the rest of the bits, I'd still need an IVA. That was the problem with Bish's motor wasn't it? As it happens, it'll have had replacement engine, box, new brakes, master cylinder, etc, so might not gain enough points to not need IVA. And I can't believe that you can plonk a landy body on what used to be a rangie, and not say it's radically altered! B)
  12. So do we think, then, that if you're prepared to go down the IVA route, reciepts and pictures wouldn't be so much of a problem? For example, I'm building a 100" which I'm quite prepared to IVA. I bought the vehicle ('82 rangie as donor) as stripped and shortened. Since then, I've galv'd it, and am building it up. I have no reciept for initial purchase, although the V5 has been changed to my name, and it is SORN'd, and have no photos of the initial fabrication work (although I've got shed loads of the subsequent build up). As I understand it, if I put it through IVA, no probs, as it is proving the original identity that is the important bit. As an IVA'd vehicle, it would get a new VIN number and Q plate. Have I got my understanding right? I suspect the only way to know for sure is to speak to DVLA/VOSA! Cheers Dunc
  13. Cheers for the pic. What made you change to single hose?
  14. Thanks for the replies. Dave, is that how you sorted your hybrid, 'cos from the build photos itlooks like you're using twin front hoses? Do you have defender master cylinder/servo or did you use the range rover set up? I have to say, if I do use the defender master cylinder, I've not quite sorted it in my head how I'm going to do it! Cheers Dees
  15. Hi folks, Need some advice with sorting the brakes on the 100" I'm building. Base vehicle is a Rangie, so calipers are standard Range Rover. I have a bulkhead from a 1993-ish Defender which has pedal box servo and master cylinder attached. Master cylinder is goosed, so new is required. 1st Question is, do I buy a Defender master cylinder and try and plumb the dual hose front calipers into it? If so, anyone got any bright ideas about how to do this without screwing up the system, and keeping VOSA or MOT inspectors happy? i.e. can T-pieces be used to plumb into the single outputs of the Defender cylinder (which seems kinda wrong on principle)? Or, can a Range Rover master cylinder be fitted to a Defender servo? 2nd question is what type of brake valve is best? Looking through various books there seems to be a whole series of different valves used on different vehicles, and I'm struggling to understand the difference. Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks, Dees
  16. Folks, I am building a Rangie based hybrid, and due to the calipers being fubar-ed, I'm planning on changing all four. The base vehicle was a 1982 Rangie. i would like if possible to upgrade the brakes to cope with a 3.9 or 4.2 engine, and am a bit at a loss as to what equivalent Part No's to get. Could anyone advise as to suitable part numbers and whether I should be looking at things like vented discs, bigger discs, etc. thanks Dees
  17. Morning all. a quick question to test the knowledge - how long and how wide is a 110 rear tub? I've just bought one and need to know whether i'll fit in the back of a transit van! Ta Dunc
  18. Thanks for the various answers, guys. I tried Industrial Shot Blasting in tetbury - got quoted £250! And rang Harvey Moon several times, but got no reply... My give it another go though. Cheers Duncan
  19. Thanks, Les. Any idea how much. just before I give them a bell?
  20. Hi folks - been lurking around here for a while. I have a range rover chassis that requires blast cleaning prior to galvanizing. Can anyone recommend a good (Cheap) blast cleaner around the Cirencester area? The chassis is located at Kemble airfield. Thanks Duncan
  21. Hi folks, my first post here, I've been lurking for a bit, but now I have a question hopefully someone clever can answer. I am slowly building a Rangie based hybrid tht originally had a 3.5 V8 and LT95. I want five speeds, so here's the question. Would an LT77 or R380 from a Disco or Defender drop straight into the rangie chassis or are input shaft lengths different? Am I destined to look only at Range Rovers for 'boxes?? Ta for any assistance/info rendered Dees
