  1. I know there is narrow and wide, I also found the different size gaps they fit into, what I cant find is the size/width of the actual radius arm. So, does anyone know the two different sizes for the front radius arms on a Defender?
  2. It depends on the box doesnt it? Have a look on Ashcrofts site, I think it might tell you about serial numbers and gear compatability.
  3. Thats strange, started it this morning and the smoke was gone, It seems the new DPS might have sorted it as it was the last thing I changed, its knocking a little so a tweak with the pump timing might quieten things down a bit, fingers crossed.
  4. Its not really breathing that badly, enough to chuff a little bit from the breather but I only have my old engine to compare it with, saying that my old one ran fine. Im wondering if it is over fueling and its only apparent when the engine is cold? It has a random miss fire that results in a puff of white smoke from the already puffing exhaust. Surely a cracked piston or rings wouldnt cause a random miss? When I shut the engine off am I supposed to hear fuel running back into the tank? I've never really noticed it before.
  5. I just bent mine back in while attached to the door bottoms, probably not the best thing to do but I think my issue was with the door bottoms, possibly from closing the door when inside by pulling it.
  6. Correct me if I am wrong but the NA uses a DPA pump does it not? The TD uses a DPS? Also do you not need a test rig and specialist tools to rebuild one?
  7. I have a NA 90 out on the drive with a compressor driven via a belt on the engine. Oil gets pumped into the top of the compressor then drains back down into the engines sump. First time I have ever seen one.
  8. I changed my old 19j that got locked up after drinking water resulting in a bent con rod for another 19j that I bought through EBay. On first starting it it belched out white smoke. I adjusted the pump timing and it made a huge difference. After allowing the engine to cool I started it again and again it was caughing and chucking out white smoke. It seems to clear after it warms up. Its not losing coolant, no oil in water or water in oil. The smoke is diesel as it stinks. So far I have swapped out the injectors, re-seated the intake manifold with a new gasket, tried another lift pump , tried another DPS pump , chacked over the fuel pipes and found the bleed banjo ontop of the filter blocked so unblocked that. I found a split turbo boost diaphragm so swapped that over for a good one. I have some clear pipe between the last two injectors on the leak off and can see the odd air bubble but I'm not convinced thats the problem as it seems to clear when it warms up. It drives fine, runs clear when warm and pulls like a train but it does seem to use a lot of diesel, but that might just be because I have been faffing with the fuel system and draining things down to swap bits over.. Any ideas? I'm going to pull the glow plugs and injectors and re-seat them but apart from that I'm stumped.
  9. I take it to make the props fit would mean moving the engine mounts forward? It is looking like a lot of work.
  10. Well it looks like it is a problem with the gear box, the only thing I can think of is a problem with the input shaft connecting to the lay shaft, is it possible it may have sheared off splines somewhere preventing the lay shaft from being turned? Although the fault was intermittent to begin with the mechanic said that he took if for a test drive and it has now let go altogether.
  11. So either I'll be very lucky and he has a shorty which is unlikely or I'm buggered and its a long one.
  12. What was the shorter bell housing variant fitted to?
  13. Anybody done this? I might be able to get my hands on an R380 as LT77's are few and far between. I'm not sure yet if it came from a 300tdi Defender but it did come from a Defender. I'm not sure but from what I gather the R380 from a 300TDI has a longer bell housing due to the 300TDI sitting further forward than previous diesel engines, is this true? Also, will I need to swap out the transmission tunnel and floor pans? I spoke briefly about it today and maybe the tops of the boxes can be swapped around , or something like that?
  14. Early vehicles sometimes used series UJ's, my 1985 Ninety has small ones on the rear prop and large ones on the front, I am not sure about 110's as my parts book is only for Ninetys. If it were me doing a conversion I would want to keep it as factory as possible then parts are easily bought without the need for head scratching and guess work, not just for you but if you ever decide to sell the vehicle.
  15. No, I dont think he stripped it to find out, he just said the problem is with the gear box.
