  1. It only happens when I rev the engine hard and continues to knock at tick-over, so i'm thinking it has to be mechanical. Maybe the diagram has become stiff with age or a build up of sediment. It is the original pump, twenty six years old. But it has only done 100,000 miles. I've ordered a pump so should know by next week.
  2. The pump hasn't got a filter on it so that's a bust. Took the fuel cap off, just made the knocking louder. I think the next thing to do is change the pump. I'm a bit weary about that because a lot of people seem to have problems with new pumps i.e. they don't last long. I've only seen the pattern ones on ebay. I don't know the make of the original pumps. I guess that would be the one to go for.
  3. The filter is new, only been run two or three hours but i haven't looked at the pump filter. It never entered my head, so thanks Yostumpy for that, I'll check it out. The vacuum in the tank also makes sense. I'll try that first because its the easiest.
  4. I posted this on another site but doesn't seem to be a very busy site. Can anyone shine a light on this problem? 92 200tdi, fuel tank under the seat. Engine running sweet as a nut. The problem is it sounds like I've got a one cylinder diesel in my fuel tank! The knock increases speed with the engine. I don't know if the tank is acting like a sounding board but i can feel it through the tank pick up pipe. The knocking starts when I push the throttle hard then continues until I restart the engine then its back to normal. The problem could be the lift pump transferring the knock down the pipe to the tank, but the pump seems ok, no noises. Any ideas?
  5. The Haynes Manual on their lubricants and fluid chat state ATF for the gearbox and 80/90 for the transfer box. The Dinglecroft chart has a note saying both boxes are happy with ATF. Not what i would do.
  6. I thought i would run this by everyone because the world of oil specs has changed so much since Land Rover first recommended the oils for my 92 Defender. Oil seem to be far more versatile now. I was also surprised to find Land Rover recommended ATF for the LT77 and could also be used if desired in the transfer box LT230! Anyway, i have some EP75w-80 mineral gear oil, enough to replace the oil in my diffs and transfer box. I know Land Rover recommended 80/90 but what are your thoughts? It would save me a bit of money.
  7. I'm currently rebuilding my defender 90 on a new chassis. I decided to fit a discovery 1rear axle to give me discs all round. All well and good, cleaned up and fitted. So, tried to fit new shocks but I can't get enough thread through to put the nut on the bottom mounting. The discovery has cups on top and underneath the mounting which the original axle didn't have. The dished washers that came with the shocks fit perfectly into them. Other than cutting the rubbers down I cant think what to do. Any ideas?
  8. Probably a question that has been asked a thousand times. Will 300tdi Discovery axles fit directly onto a 200tdi Defender 90 ?
  9. Thank you for the reply. I assumed that would be the case. Always best to ask if unsure.
  10. Hello, I'm taking the column out of the bulkhead. Do I need to drill out the steering lock bolts or am I missing something? Is there anything I should be aware of when I remove the bulkhead? Thanks.
  11. Thanks Alland, it's that simple I may have been over thinking it.
  12. I have a powdercoated bulkhead that I need to paint before fitting. It has a very smooth tuff finish. I dont know if there is any product that will ectch into the surface unless someone knows different. I can't really imagine trying to sand it down although I haven't tried at this point. Has anyone had long term success painting powdercoat and how did you do it ?
  13. I have a 200 tdi Defender. 100,000 miles. Today, i tried to start her up but she would fire but not run. I then noticed oil all over the n/s front chassis. I unclipped the air filter and saw the oil had been coming from the air filter drain. I took out the paper filter that was half soaked in oil and started her up with no problems. Apart from not starting that one time i have had no problems. No strange noises from the turbo, no lack of power, no smoke from the exhaust. She is running fine. I was wondering, are there any oil seals in the turbo? I can't think where else the oil could be coming from. Can anyone give me a clue?
  14. I stripped my rear cross member down to bare metal with a grinder fitted with disk for stripping paint. It looks like a rubber sponge. Can't remember what it's called. Sprayed it with several coats of satin hammerite. It looks as good if not better than factory finish. I've even tried chipping it, didn't even mark it. I'm really pleased with it, and i'm a perfectionist.
  15. I've seen two types of spare wheel carrier. When i say two types, i mean the same but of different length i.e the hinges are more outboard than the other. Can anyone tell me of any advantages or disadvantages between the two. I thought that maybe there might be enough room to mount a jack to the longer one. Do the hinges stop the fitting of bumperettes etc. Could a swing away be used in other ways, wheel and jerry cans.? Any ideas? Any interesting photo's.
