As some of you may know, I live in France and things here are different in many ways... One of those things that are different is how buying used trailers goes.

I needed one and, as a new one was out of the question, it would be looking on line. In France, LeBonCoin is the place to look for anything and loads and loads of used trailers came up. So, one sents a message through the LB system and then waits for a reply from the seller who eagerly wants to sell the trailer.                  And waits..  And waits some more... Experience has told me that sellers post an add, sell the thing and forget / can't be bothered to take it down. Go on Holiday. etc.

So, when #7 seller responded and actually communicated I had no choice but to go and get it.

A 720 km. (about 460 miles) roundtrip to collect this one.

I was happy with the trailer and the new to me Discovery did what it should do.

    France is a big country....

Nice sized trailer for a trip around the UK that, long overdue a visit to this part of the world!

  2. Another vote for std Defender seats, I've done several 500mile days on them with no trouble.

I've also driven offroad in seats designed for sports cars and they can give you a right pounding in the kidneys if the car lurches side to side.

I currently have a Stonefield 4x4 P5000 V8 Chrysler all up and running. Needs work to be put back on the road as it has been dry stored since I bought it and just not had the time to do anything with it. I have that and a Series 2 Land Rover to rebuild as well when ever I get the time. The Stonefield is a brilliant machine and a lot cheaper than a 101 forward control which is what I originally wanted but they are way to much money now.

The other thing that can cause this is the bushes parting on the rear upper wishbones. I was shocked how knackered mine were, and I noticed no other symptoms. In fact I think the TC cutting in masked the real problem - the TC notices the movement in the back end just before the driver does and takes control, leaving the driver unable to tell what happened first.

Cheers, I'll check this, only a couple of months past its last MOT so bushes should all be ok, it was doing it pre-MOT.

    • Steering Position Sensor
According to the internet, this is a difficult & very expensive problem!  However, it's just a magnet ring slipping on the steering column shaft.  I glued it back in place with some Jenolite Epoxy Putty which took 30mins without dismantling anything, just reaching into the footwell.  It's been good ever since.

Hi Simon, this is interesting, my D3 ABS is coming on on left hand uphill hairpin bends which I am told is a sign of the steering sensor being a menace. I looked at the cost of a new one and decided it wasn't really that annoying afterall. Looks like a few minutes with the blood rushing to my head in the footwell might be worth trying... 🙂

  7. I've gone from 20 years of a 110 to a D3 and I love it to be honest. Its quick, economical and reliable so far. Cavernous boot, and air suspension make the practicalities of daily chores easy. Hitching trailers with air-suspension saves lots of effort.

I went for the best serviced D3 I could find. In my case an ex-Armed Response Police Car. It's on 174,000miles so far with service history showing a service every 4-6000miles from new, it runs like new still.

Theres tons of room inside to sleep, for solo (or two for a short trip) camping it is a perfect car.

  8. Is it possible to tweak D3 suspension settings via some software? I modified my old P38s standard ride height and more specifically the offroad height to deal with a particularly nasty rocky ledge I drive occcassionally. The D3 has the proper HD tow hitch which I do need but it does catch in a couple of places I drive even on offroad height.

I know I could put lift rods on it cheaply but don't want to compromise getting my dear old Mum in the passenger seat by raising the access mode.

Bigger AT tyres are going to need to happen before too long, I just need to decide what size and whether to stick with 17" or go for 18". Head says 17 for bigger sidewalls, running an L405 on 22s makes you paranoid about sidewalls 😕

  9. I had an 'auto handbrake release failure' error come up recently. I eventually found a fix for this online so just recalling it here so it may help someone else.

It appears its an XYZ sensor problem that can be reset by finding a long straight road, you need to reverse until R registers on the dash indicator then  engage first gear and drive up through the gears to sixth waiting for the dash indicator to register the gear each time. then stop and turn off, remove the key lock and unlock the doors. Key back in and turn on the ignition, problem solved!

    Woohoo, a free fix! 🙂

you owe me a pint if this helps.

  11. I scrapped my red 110 after 20+ years of ownership, I parked it for a year to ensure I was doing the right thing. I don't regret scrapping it, I do regret not looking after it a bit better!.

Sell the CSK and buy something stupid, thats what I did, but I'd suggest something a bit less stupid and more useful that will appreciate, like an early V8 Discovery or a good P38 or early L322.

  12. I'll never retire, doubt I'll ever be able to afford it, not with my lifestyle. There is a good chance my lifestyle will remove the need for retirement anyway. I've always said if I die with enough money for a good dinner and a decent drink I'll have failed at life as I missed out on that dinner and drink. I want the bank to be in mourning when I go 🙂

Yeah the new timber is from B&Q and will be trated inside and out

    First mistake 😉

modern softwood is, frankly, carp, as is a lot of the treatment available now its all eco safe. There are lots of suppliers of decent local hardwood if you look around I know a few in North Devon. Get it in, rack it up to air dry for a while then make some doors that will outlast you.

Plan B is Cuprinol 5 star the hell out of it before you start and treat every cut and screw hole again...and again...and every year forever...
