  1. My dad and i have a P reg 110 with Exmoor trim seats. They are the modular design with the new risers. What we would like to find out is how do we get the seat to pivot on the front hinge? The only way we would be able to access the battery is by removing the seat which would be a bit of a pain espcially when we are out off roading.
  2. Thats a bit of a pain then but thats fine as well. We will just do a few lanes up on the plain. In early summer we did a few lanes up on the plain around Chitterne. It was a tad hard in places due to the fact of no rain for ages. I checked the news letter for May and it said they had no firing going on around Chitterne. Whilst having a tea break at the mud hole we saw thick white smoke coming from the german village on top of the hill then soon after alot of gun fire. We phoned the range master and asked why they were firing on a range that was apparently open to members of the public during the day. He couldn't answer that so we up sticks n left pretty sharpish. As we left we met 2 APC's and a Challenger 2 tank coming up the byway. So i will defo be checking the newsletter. I read through the may one several times as well and marked out the area where we could go and the areas we couldnt.
  3. Cheers Ron. I know they had put TRO on them last year but wasnt sure if they had put them on this winter because of the frozen ground. We did the section between the race course and the next road and it was rock solid. Nicely surfaced but rock solid.
  4. Checked the 110 this morning. Sounds so dodgy but i had it on four axle stands with Oak logs as back ups on the diffs incase the axle stands slip. Had my dad put it in low range whilst i was underneath to check for excessive play in the UJ's. And it was the UJ's on the front prop shaft that are going. That will be the project in the new year. The clunk from the front was the calipers (which scared us a bit). We tightened the nuts down so there isnt any play in them at all. Whilst i was underneath i checked for any other problems or mods we could do. The big one is a "skidder" plate for the tow hitch as we caught our one on the disco several times. The last time we caught the towhitch on the defender it was held on by bungee cords on the way home.
  5. Does anyone know if there are any current TRO's on the Ox Drove between Salisbury Racecourse and Donhead St Mary? As in the new year a couple of friend and i are planning on doing the full legnth as last year most of it was closed. As were the adjoining byways. Even half of Wingreen was shut.
  6. We are already with Dorset Rover and FODROW. We have used Douglass Motors in the past for various bits. We tend to use a garage in blandford as it is just round the corner from our house and he has a couple of land rover specialists. We orignally got our 110 from Rudkin Vehicle Services in Clapton, Crewkerne. Its just a bit too far to go for the vehicle to be looked at.
  7. Ok will check those when the weather improves. Its still a tad snowy and damp.
  8. My dad and i have noticed that our 110 has got quite a bit of vibration at about 15-20 mph and again at 60-70 mph. We think it might be the front diff as the noise and vibration is coming from that end. I checked the UJ's and they are ok. It is a P reg and has done about 128k. When the weather improves i will put it on axle stands and check for rattles from the front and back. Any idea what else migth be causing it? P.S There is also a clunk when we brake heavily, same as before from the front. The calipers are on tight so it wont be those.
  9. Ours had tax and MOT til next April. It recently (2 months ago) had a big lots of welding done but not welding on the chassis. It just had new bushes all round and the gearbox is fine apart from the layshaft bearings just starting to make a little bit of noise
  10. Would anyone say that £800 is a very reasonable price for a P(96) Reg 300 Tdi Discovery? It had 132,000 miles on the clock, all terrain tyres, a few dents here n there but nothing major and the odd small water leak (but only around the sills n sunroof).
  11. Thats funny we have the same problem on our P reg Discovery. It has done for the past 2 years and our mechanic has said its nothing to worry about. he said its like the layshaft bearings if they make noise they will make noise for ages before they completely go.
  12. My dad and i are currently having a P red Defender 110 County Station Wagon built to our spec by Rudkin Vehicle Services. The one thing we forgot to add to the wish list was a snorkel and it is currently at Exmoor Trim being re-upholstered. We are planning on buying a snorkel kit off the internet but only from well known and trusted sources. How easy would it be to fit the snorkel kit at home and how long would it take to fit it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
  13. my dad and i have given the dealer our wishlist for kit to be added. we're having a full refurb of all of the upholstery (seats, etc) done by exmoor trim. and a new set of 5 insa turbo dakar mud terrains. all things being well we wil be having our new toy by the end of august
  14. How many miles you had out of them so far? We had some C-Trax All terrains and they lasted about 15k.
  15. My dad and i are having a Defender 110 County Station made to our specification. it is pretty much all there. All it needs is a decent set of mud terrains. Any idea what Insa Turbo Dakar mud terrains are like? Also, does anybody run Insa Turbo Traction Tracks?
  16. Our Discovery has just done 130,000 miles but its hasnt done any towing so to speak. The clutch has slipped once.
  17. OK. Cheers guys will check the alternator tomorrow evening when i get back from work.
  18. Whilst my dad and i were going for a long drive searching for a newer defender than our P reg Discovery we noticed that whilst the engine is under high revs and goin up hill in 3rd or 4th the rev needdle is flickering. Yet the engine is not rising or dropping in revs. After noticing the rev needle was flickering we looked in the passenger side mirror and rear view mirror and could see a long and clearly visible smoke trail behind us. Our mechanic had tweaked the fuel pump because according to him it couldn't pull a skin of a rice pudding never mind itself up a hill. Any ideas what would cause the rev needle to flicker but not change the engine revs? And, do you think our mechanic has tweaked the fuel pump too much?
  19. We had 3 winches stolen at one of our work bases in West Dorset. All off a Land Rover Defender 110 Commercial. We had CCTV in place and recording 24/7. We handed the CCTV footage into the local police station and found out it was a group of local travellers that had actually inhabited one of our sites and followed the vehicle back to the base. We now have a brand new truck and the winch has been welded to the truck. The nuts and bolts had disappeared but the winch remains we just occasionally replace the nuts and bolts.
  20. My dad and i are local to dorset and have all of the relevant OS maps for that area. We use OL15 (Purbeck and South Dorset). We mark out all of the byways with highlighter pens and colour code them as per their designations( byway, opra, ucr, restricted byway, etc).
  21. My dad and i and a couple of friends drove along it the other day. Although it was busy with cars that had overflowed from the main Stonehenge car park, it wasnt badly cut up. There were occasional big holes but they could be easily avoided by going on the wide verges( if you were in a car). I think all the local authority needs to do is put up signs saying "Not suitable for Motor Vehicles" or "Not suitable for low riding vehicles". Unfortunately in this "nanny" state we live in it would be easier for the authorty to close the lane and they wouldnt have to maintain it. People can't exactly use it as a rat run.
  22. Thats worrying as we had a "Landmarc" range pickup drive by about 5 minutes before but he drove along the army track and didnt even check the byway section. My dad and i were sort of hoping that they were using blanks for the heavier artilery. We were in the bottom of the valley next to the deep mud hole when the rounds started to go off. But there were no signs or boards stating that we should not drive on that particular byway so we proceded as normal.
  23. Whilst my dad and i were driving around on Salisbury Plain on 15th May 2010. We noticed that a large quantity of the wider byways that criss cross the plain have been surfaced over the past couple of months. The bit that surprised us the most that despite having no proper rain for months there was still some very deep sloppy mud in the Chitterne Down mud hole. Whilst we were towing our friend out we were aware of a large quantity of false smoke arising from the German Village. As his engine slowly dried out they began firing what we think were blank rounds. Yet, according to their firing dates Chitterne Down, Westdown/Larkhill and Warminster ranges were meant to be fully open to the public. When our friends engine dried out we very quickly left that part of the range and drove round to the Westdown Range to try out the byways there. Has anyone else got lost on the byway that goes to the back of Westdown Camp from the A360 and had to ask the guard for directions?
