  1. Cheers, so a 285/70/16 or a 265/75/16 would be about the same size and keep the speedo reading correctly.
  2. Cheers for the continued info. Plan to leave the SAGs on the rims they are on at the moment, will hopefully pick up a set of wheels with tyres and then may sell the ones I've got. Hence the Qs about what wheels will fit, as I am not fussy on alloys or steels, so will buy them based on the tyres available! To be honest I quite like the wheels I have, they are just the basic steel ones, possibly modular wheels (not sure what they are called!) Am guessing some spacers would sort the clearance issues if I did want some different wheels? Just out of interest, what are the best tyre sizes to go for? Have read I need to change the speedo cog if I change the wheel size, will do that if needed, but have seen quite a range in tyre widths and profiles being advertised and not sure what sizes are best?
  3. Cheers guys, so I have big flanges on the front! Anyone know the PCD and what wheels will fit with the hubs as they are? Have read good things about the BFG MTs, watching a few sets on eBay and some kumhos on 15" steels went for £400 last night also. They did look like they'd work well on road, more of a chunked out road style tread than the tread pattern on the SAGs.
  4. Looks like some good stuff there, will take a closer look when I'm back from my hols!
  5. I did do a search on here, but the word manual brings back mostly references to gearboxes!
  6. Yes, drums on the back (although I may change this at some point...) There has to be a tyre that looks chunky but is still good on the road, at least better than the SAGs!
  7. My 90 has a 3.9 EFI from, I believe, a RRC. The ECU says its a 14CUX, which should make it a 1990-1995 era hotwire type from what I have read. The V8s aren't covered in the 90 manuals, so looking for something specific for the engine. Assume the Haynes RRC manual which runs upto the 1992 model would cover it, but a lot of manual on a RR which I don't need, just need the engine bit. Ideally something that shows how to take the engine apart, fit a new cam, head gaskets etc. Cheers
  8. Am planning on getting a second set of wheels/tyres for my 1985 90. There are loads of sets of alloys and tyres on eBay, but I have no idea what wheels will fit. I have 'modular' wheels on at the moment (I think...), am not sure what PCD they are or what sort of offset I should be looking for on a replacement set? Was hoping to pick up a set of cheap wheels from a defender / disco etc. with some half decent tyres for road use. Talking of tyres for road use, I touched on this point in another thread but it fits here too...a few posts around have recommended mud terrain tyres as the best compromise for road use without losing the chunky appeal of an offroad tyre, welcome any recommendations on a good road tyre (my landy will be used 90%+ on road most likely and I can put the General SAGs on if going offroad), but something that still looks like it belongs on a 90, I like chunky with white lettering.
  9. Cheers, will get a Haynes and take a look. Did notice they only so a Haynes for the Diesel 90s, mine was always a V8. Assume that, apart from the engine which is now a 3.9 from a RRC, that they are all the same?
  10. The steering in my 1985 Land Rover 90 is very 'loose'. Most noticeable when cruising as opposed to when on throttle. Guy I bought it from put it down to the tyres (General SAGs) not being designed for road use but I don't think it can be just the tyres, although I do intend to buy some replacement wheels/tyres for road use only and keep the SAGs in the garage for offroad. So a few questions... Whay tyre makes and sizes would you recommend for road use? I do like the beefy look and the white lettering like the BFGs, but road handling is the primary objective. What could I check on my 90 to see if there is anything wrong with the steering mechanism? Am new to Landys, so got a lot of learning to do. Think I better buy a Haynes manual pronto. Its a 1985 that came with a 3.5 V* but now has a 3.9 EFI (Hot Wire). Thanks
  11. Thanks for the warm welcome. Picked her up yesterday. V5 does still say 3.5 V8 but I have it insured with a replacement 3.9 V8 engine as a modification, so covered in that perspective. The V8 does seem down on power a little, not what I would expect 180bhp and 250 ft/lbs of torque to feel like from a V8, so it maybe that the cam is warn. The main decision is whether to try and tune it as a petrol only engine or to go the LPG route and tune it for LPG. E.g. with an RPi OMVL LPG kit you get a dual fuel chip, so no need to spend £300-£400 on an optimax or tornado chip and also avoid the need to replace the ignition system etc as you get all new injectors and leads. I don't really want to tune the engine for much more power, just want to make sure it is making the sort of power it should and doing it as efficiently as possible! I do however need to first think about the steering, was like driving a boat. There is a lot of movemement in the steering column before you feel anything from the wheels. So any advice on what might cause wollowy steering?? It does have offroad tyres on it, they are General Super All Grip (like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/750-16-General-Sag-Super-All-Grip-MUD-tyres-x-4-/190237555615), so think a change of tyre to something more suited to the road might be in order. Any recommendations for some good road tyres? Am hoping I'll be able to pick up a set of used alloys with road tyres cheap second hand, so let me know if you have any!
  12. Just put a deposit on my first Land Rover, an '85 90 truck cab (with soft top too). Was originally a 3.8 V8 on carbs, but that has been replaced with a 3.9 EFI from a RR. Mechanically and structurally seems sound, but the bodywork needs some serious TLC (any advice on best places to get good cheap bodyparts welcomed!). Going to run it for a few weeks then most likely get the engine spruced up with an uprated cam and a chip, or possibly go the LPG route if the economy is real bad and I find myself doing more miles than originally anticpated!
