  1. Correct on both counts. Sorry forgot to mention yes it's '97 300 tdi and your also right about the interior light in that the light works when manually switched on but not with the doors opening/closing, not sure about the fogs though. Many thanks will check it out tomorrow.
  2. I have noticed since having a flat battery that I now have no rear wiper or heated screen, no front heated screen, no intermittent function on the front wiper and also both front and rear screens will wash but not wipe. I have checked the relevant fuses according to the hand book but they all appear ok. Is there another fuse that may affect the operation of the above functions or can anybody suggest where to start looking for the soloution before I start taking things apart unnecessarily. The battery was removed and recharged and I have since found there is a drain on it but not had time to track it down yet. I'm not entirely sure if these issues were present before the battery going flat or not but have only noticed afterwards.
  3. I'd advise against Adrian flux, wouldn't suggest them to my worst enemy. Want to know the ins and outs of a cats arse and make you jump through hoops however this happens AFTER they've approved you and taken your money!. They wanted to cancel my insurance after a month due to the fact they had not received details that I had already sent them 3 times about an accident that my farther who is on the policy had had over 4 years ago, crazy people to deal with.
  4. Agree with the marshals issue, I found a nice solid bit of grass to park on just off the Tarmac lane and was told I couldn't park there and was pointed in the direction of a freelander traveling sideways across a field, now I'm not a huge freelander fan but instinct told me if a landy is sideways and struggling a vw golf estate should not follow, so I took evasive action across the field. I then walked past where I was told I could not park about 5 mins later to see the same Marshall happily talking to people in the 3 landys now parked there, his mates I wonder?. No organisation as far as parking was concerned, surly common sense would say where certain vehicles would be best parked ie send the 4x4s into the mud and keep the cars/ vans on the dry stuff.
  5. Went today, what a pile of carp. Trade stands full of cheap tat or rusty junk and 12 quid to get in was at least 10 quid too much. Plus I didn't take the disco and instead took the golf due to it doing over twice the MPG (160 mile round trip) then found I had to park in about 3 inches of mud luckily I didn't get stuck but plenty did including some arse in a spanking new RR Sport lol and the driver of the mx5 next to me wasn't best pleased at all.
  6. Hi I've run a search on this but have turned up nothing so far so am after some help/ ideas. I went out earlier this evening in the light and parked up at my destination, when I returned in the dark I jumped in started the truck and switched on the headlights, the blue main beam indicator illuminated on the dash so I pulled the lever back till it clicked but the main beam indicator remained on. I then looked up expecting to see bright lights but could not see very much at all and thought I had no lights, on getting out to check i found I only had dipped headlights. No matter what position the switch is in that's all I get is dipped beam no 'flashers' either but still the main beam indicator remains illuminated in both dipped and headlight positions. It seems also that there is a relay in the passenger footwell that clicks when I operate the stalk switch. As its dark and the neighbours won't be too happy if I'm out there knocking about in torchlight I am after a few ideas or at least a starting point for my investigations after work tomorrow. Thanks in advance. Trucks a 1998 300 tdi disco ES.
  7. Nice tip that, wish I'd heard that earlier as my tyre fitter told me to stick to the same/manufacturers pressures when I fitted 235/85/16 BF Goidrich MT to my disco 1 and before I knew it both outer/inner edges had worn quite quickly compared to the centre. Have now upped the pressure and they seem to be wearing more evenly now.
  8. When I lock my '97 300tdi disco using the key fob the central locking operates and locks all the doors (indicators flash three times as they should) but then almost straight away unlocks its self, this happens for the first 3-4 attempts then it will stay locked, though I do worry I will come back to it to find in my absence it has unlocked itself, also when I open a door after it has unlocked itself a clicking like a relay sound can be heard coming from near the glove box area. When the doors eventually do lock however the central locking works perfectly i.e. it will lock and unlock in succession with no issue but left to stand for 10 mins the problem returns. Have checked the door sensors, the little button type things in the closures but all seems well. Its worrying as the key doesn't work in the drivers door (turns but nothing happens) so can't lock the truck that way either, any ideas guys? Help will be much appreciated.
  9. As suggested above try a thermostat, I had one that came in a blue box and it took forever to come up to temp then only gave me mildly warm heaters for a short space of time, I took out the said stat and replaced it with a Bearmach one, still only cost about £3:50, now I get warm heaters in about 5 mins they actually warm up quicker than my 2.8 v6 Audi A4 and they now stay warm too. That said the heaters may warm up sooner but the interior of the Audi still reaches a comfortable temperature more quickly simply because the disco is a barn of a thing to heat and probably less well sealed too.
  10. Strata is open to drive all year round but you take your chances at this time of year especially after heavy rain, it can get scary!. Soar y mynydd is quite close and is also a lovely drive.
  11. I've had some different opinions on this subject from friends that work as mechanics or fitters so I want to run two questions past you guys aswell, 1. If I fit a decat pipe to my Disco will I get any real benifits power/economy wise?. Bearing in mind that there doesn't seem to be any issues with the existing cat and I don't consider a 3bhp and/or a 1-2mpg increase to really be worth the effort untill the cat does actually give up and then it would not only be for those savings it would be for saving on the buying a cat itself. 2. If I do decat then will it fail the new incoming MOT regulations as I have heard that any particulate filters or such that were fitted as standard to the vehicle being tested must be present at the time of test.

  13. Took the battery back today as it was still under warrantee and they checked it and told me it was charged and ok, I'd had to use the jump pack to get her going and went straight there approx 2 mins down the road so I'm guessing that short journey would not have injected much life into the battery. I told him I suspected that the battery was simply just not big enough, he then got his big battery book out and said there you go mate its the heavy duty one as advised in here, I looked and the suggested battery was only 450 cca, so I got him to exchange it for a 700cca, which I think is more like it, so fingers crossed eh?.
  14. I lost a good engine due to someone possibly putting thread lock or the wrong strength of thread lock (I am lead to bilieve there are 2 strengths) on the crank pully bolt, it would not be undone. Every trick, even the dodgy/risky ones were tried. To cut a long story short the engine got taken out and swapped again after only being in the truck for about 3 months due to me not being able to change the belt. It sounded really nice and pulled really well, I was gutted, not to mention the cost of a second engine and fitting. So draw from my experience what you will. HTH.
  15. Am having the same trouble with my 300tdi discovery at the mo, been fine untill the cold weather now it's disco no go, but as you described once started via jump pack/leads then it will start all day long no problem. Let me know what you come up with, unless it's specifically petrol engine related, as it's starting to become a little boring now having to jump it all the time.
  16. Thanks for your suggestions guys, will run through them on the weekend but am wondering if it is a drain/voltage leak why would it only cause an issue when the temp drops? Been turning over and starting really strongly untill it got cold.
  17. I've checked through previous posts via the search facility but the posts I have come across relate to split charge systems to power a winch or other auxiliary items. Right my issue is with a 300tdi which part way through last winter was fitted with a new battery from the local tyre/battery supplier due to the old one failing to start the truck in the cold weather. However the new battery followed suit about 2 months later and was replaced by the supplier under warrantee and also updated to heavy duty. The rest of the winter and summer went by with no problems but during the recent cold weather I'm back in the same boat and am forced to use a jump pack most of the time for the initial start, after which it will start with no problems (unless you leave the radio on for a while when you change the rear brake pads lol). Now the vehicle is a second vehicle used for green lanes maybe once a month but the rest of the time the journeys are short start/stop hops about the place, pick up logs for the fire, pop down the local shop etc. So does anyone have any battery suggestions for me? Been looking at optima but they're a bit steep in the price department.
  18. It is more likely that the leaks are coming from where the sunroof cartridge is bonded to the roof itself (as mine and two other mates sunroofs were). They are easy to remove, you've already done the fiddly bit by removing the headlining, so take them out scrape away the old seal and renew using the likes of Tiger seal/sikaflex (I used tiger seal and have so far had no further ingress). I made the mistake of thinking it was coming from the rubber seals or drain tubes but could not be botherd to remove the headlining etc. so I opened the roofs and squirted silicone everywhere and just closed them down wiping the excess from the outside, needless to say they still leaked and I had to remove the headlining afterall, so in being a bit lazy I lost the use of two perfectly functional sunroofs.
  19. The section of Sarn running from Aberdulais to Banwen has a TRO on it and is only open for use from 31st May until 22nd of August. This TRO was campaigned for by A Mr. Walters of 'Walters mining' A multi millionaire who owns 'Walters arena' up at Severn Sisters. He wanted the section TRO'd so that it would not interfere with any 'motorsport event' he was holding on the section that includes part of the byway, now by my and a lot of others opinion if A TRO is in place then there should be no use of the byway barring access i.e. For Farmers to feed livestock etc. however Mr. Walters continues to flout the regulation that he campaigned to have introduced under the guise of preventing damage to the byway by use through winter months by using the area for profitable motor events himself during the exclusion period. Just please be aware that any payment for use of the site at Severn sisters/Walters arena is money going towards helping him close the byway for good and then allow him to charge you to access an area that is A right of way. As for the section running through the Brecon becons national park some will tell you it's open and some will say it's closed permanently, I myself can not get 100% clarification either way so have not driven it myself. Hope this helps and hope you have A good outing wherever you go.
  20. I found the headlights on my disco 300 tdi a little less than adequate so bought some Osram night breakers same watt etc. As standard lamps but somehow seem to give out more/a better light, so much so I updated the lamps on the Audi too.
  21. As SteveG ^^ I have Guardian jackable rock sliders but no jack adapter, so far all has been well just using a high lift on the bottom section to jack up the disco.
  22. Sorry this is going to be no help to you but, I think your mate should remove his bushes and frame them as anything made by Britpart lasting more than a week or two is virtually unknown lol. I once replaced my bottom rear shock bushes with Britpart (rubber) and they lasted a whole three days! That's a cost of £1.25 a day! lol.
  23. I really can't see what all the fuss is about, he doesn't seem to have caused a huge amount, if any damage. OK I agree he should not have done it but it's now got to the point of stupidity what with all the talk of dismantling it and bringing it down on the train or indeed having it air lifted off and handing him the bill, common sense should prevail give him a stern talking to telling him what an idiot he has been and to jump back in and get the bl**dy thing off there ASAP and don't be so daft as to go to the next big mountain and try the same there and leave it at that. But I bet there's some tree hugger somewhere saying that unless we make an example of him and send him to jail for longer than a murderer then everybody with a 4x4 will turn up on the weekends and attempt to drive up there, or something equally as dim as that. Rant over lol. That said I do like the idea of some places like this being opened to pre registered people maybe once a year as suggested above, and I only think it's been a stupid thing for him to have done because the powers that be say your not allowed to do it, thus making it illegal and so giving responsible 4x4 users a bad name, but at the rate the areas that we are allowed to roam are decreasing there will be no such thing as 'responsible' 4x4 users unless you buy your own couple of acres to play on and even then you won't be allowed to invite friends around without having some sort of public liability insurance, I'm ranting again are'nt I? Lol. All the best to him and I hope common sense will prevail.
  24. Just when pulling? Lol mine is noisy all the time, I've had my P reg 300tdi ES Disco for about a year now and when you jump in to the full electric leather, fake wood cabin it seems like a nice place to be then you flick the key. Close your eyes and it wouldn't be hard to imagine your behind the wheel of, oh I dont know? Maybe an old J or K plated Transit van, it's at it's worst when started from cold lasting about 3-5 mins then the noise lessens but I could never describe it as being at all/in any way quiet. That said I've enjoyed many miles and pointed it at some very rough terrain (it's all set up for green laning 2" lift, big tyres, snorkel etc.) and it's never let me down. But if your looking for refinement then a diesel Land Rover ain't gonna do it for you unless you got enough cash to buy something quite new.
