  1. Hi Geoff, been a while, hope you are well, the dent in the door isn't huge and i have pulled the wing back out so I am mulling over just replacing the hinges and strap and just taking a small hit when i sell it b4 i go to Aus, its not in perfect shape anyway so how much difference the dent will make i'm not sure.
  2. many thanks - they have the door in black. Just wonder if the diesel to get from sheffield to the south coast and back is more than another colour resprayed..... hmmmm..... thanks for the number.
  3. I think since it was owned by BMW at the time we will blame the Germans. I was giving someone a lift to the top of a windswept hill in my P38a when they had the great idea of opening the door and letting go! The wind took the door (passenger front) and put it to about 125 degrees, snapping the retaining strap and both the stops on the hinges, bending in the wing and creasing the door. I was so impressed with them at this point. My question, does anyone know someone with an old p38 NSF door that i could respray and put on (or a black one) ebay seems a little empty at the moment. Many Thanks
  4. Will try the idea, thanks. Waiting for new handset batteries to arrive (today hopefully), this still wouldn't explain why the door EKA procedure is not working.... Any ideas?
  5. OK, took her to the gym to pick someone up after, got out, blizzard like conditions, well raining anyway. Pressed the Key.... nothing. Open door manually - alarm. Key in Ignition, ENGINE DISABLED. GRRR. Forward planning, get phone out with EKA code (impressed?) No interest from rangie whatso ever - no flashes no beeps nothing. Just wondered if anyone knows if this might be an outstation thing. The interior light do not go on when i open the door - where is the switch for this, the window works but the mirtror doesn't. Anyone had a similar problem. She is grounded at the gym for the forseeable. thankyou
  6. Hey, My diesel P38 has started sounding a little uneaven at idle, usually only when it is cold. Sat at traffic lights I get an intermittant vibration which I can feel through the whole car... Its not major but it is new so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts... she has plenty of oil and is about to get a new fuel filter. Many thanks, Ben
  7. me thinks that will definatly be worth looking into - thankyou for the link. As for blend motors I found a place selling them cheap..... and I can't remember where it is.... can have a hunt about if you find you do need to replace them ( Pug 406 motors I believe are a direct replacement at half the cost ?) Ben
  8. Educated guess time..... Sounds electrical to me.... I know nothing about the autobox though. First thing I think you need to see where the contactors are for the park selection and ensure they are being made. "the selector lever moves into Park ok"... does it engage transmission park do you know? Ben
  9. Hello to you, Out of curiosity how do you know it is only running on 5? Have you any history of the engine... how many miles etc. Ben
  10. All that happens is that they make the most annoying noise the P38 has made yet, in search of a really thin hoover nozzle now Gonna have to get mine regassed at some point - need to check my condensor first tho - assuming it is leaking :-( Good Luck.
  11. out of curiosity how much did you get charged for the re-gas? My P38 (air con not working) changes temperature for every degree - noticable difference if LHS is 3 deg warmer than RHS. Carefull you don't drop leaves into the gap where the pollen filter goes... ask me how I Know Ben
  12. had the rear end up again.... wheel ran smoothly... took the brakes out and re-coppersliped them... so far so good. Really wierd - good she has been on the road through all the floods tho :-)
  13. Got the diagram.... considering I spend half my life designing electical circuit schematics it is a poor show I can't work the thing out. Think the design engineer had had a few when he drew it.... will e-mail you the pic see if you can make more of it than I. Cheers Geoff (PS. CRTT is this w/end - we don't get to play :-( )
  14. Ric, Have heard rumour of wiring harness not giving quite enough voltage to the clutch - I believe it is an electromagnetic thingie.... Try putting 12v straight from the battery to the clutch +ve Then you will know if it is power or worn clutch. If worn clutch then I think David Sparkes wrote a fairly comprehensive article on it :-) Ben
  15. Well I decided I had some money to throw around and I purchased a Kenlowe. However she runs soooo quiet... more power.... less drag.... and I am getting about 30 Mpg. Was really worth it IMO, would recommend anyone with VC fan which is getting sticky to change it. Ben (PS thermostat was also broken so all mpg gain cannot be put down to the fan entirely)
  16. Well my Diesel P38a has never had working A/C since I got it. The book symbol only seems to come on when I turn the A/C on - its fine when the A/C off button is pressed. Is there a relay in the fusebox that I can frig out to see if the compressor clutch has failed? If so does it have to be professionally un-gassed before i can do anything. Unlike you V8 boys my compressor is way down at the bottom of the rad. Anyone else come across similar problems? Ben
  17. Hey, As the title suggests my P38a Diesel has decided to paint the road. As I stand facing the engine there is a large pipe coming off the LHS of the engine, which has a split in it. It is about 2-3 inches in diameter and goes to the radiator / intercooler area. I am guessing this is part of the intercooler system and it appears to be from there that the oil is coming out. Not too much - but enough to go onto the bottom of the rad and pool and drip onto the floor. Does this indicate possible wear on the turbo mainshaft? Any pointers would be of great help :-)
  18. Hi Jon, I don't know much about the soft dash, however I have seen a similar thing done. An EAS ecu wasn't turning the compressor on, so it was wired through a relay (NOT gate) to the pressure switch. A quite effective method of solving the problem - although it has its obvious dangers. Sounds like the ecu stopped some functionallity but not all so the previous owner bodged it into a semi working system. Good luck rebuilding it - software comms are inverted serial I think, plenty out there on the forums for pin maps etc, I have nothing for the soft dash i'm afraid. Hope you sort it Ben
  19. Extremely Helpful - thankyou very much. Yes if I try and drive off it is in low ratio (the two times I have tried it), will whip the motor out and give it a clean and have a look at the binary sender unit :-) Thanks again
  20. could be, but can I be sure it is actually going fully into low range? Does the transmission move through neutral to get there? The usual thunk seems absent.
  21. Hi, New and original problem has reared its ugly head this week. My Manual P38 has decided not to go into low ratio - well not quite that simple... Press the button and it does something, if you try and drive off it seems to have engaged but says SLOW DOWN, doesn't actually say LOW on screen. Very occassionaly it seems to go in, but only once in a while. Has anyone come accross this one before?
  22. From info I have picked up a hard fault is the only fault that displays the 35mph max speed on the dash tho... could be wrong - would just be nice to regain control :-)
  23. Money aside I think it would be a bigger shame to chop it up. Not many left I believe so would be a great pity to make it one less.
  24. Does anyone know of a decent specialist in sheffield to clear my fault codes? DLS in Matlock said they would do it for £15, but finding a time to get to them is difficult. Even though she appears to be in hard fault she still comes up onto air and loses the 35max after about 10 mins of driving - still no control tho.
  25. Correct on all counts... Big rubber mallet and a friendly helper to spin the wheel :-). Wheels off. Disc on LHS had had screw drilled out... not replaced and disk was wobbly. Replaced with new disc but still no screw... shim on hub tho. RHS stripped head on the guide pin housing... trip to paddocks on saturday :-( Did find interesting things while underneath tho - dampers on rear have sheered off on lower side - hence the bouncy ride and the RHF air spring showing signs of old age - if she were a tyre she would have put points on my license. It does take over your life - but at least it does it in style. (PS Geoff, I hear Ric Mac has himself an LPG 4.6 P38 :-) think you started a trend )
