  1. Bosch rotary injector pumps as used in the Tdi engines, can be destroyed by low sulpher diesel. The first symptom is failing to stop when you switch off, remove the stop solenoid and it will be covered in swarf. The best and cheapest option is to run it on at least 10% veg oil, mine is running on 60% Peugeot know about the problem and in some countries advise the use of additive. In France this is why all diesel is 5% bio.
  2. As a biker, may I say this NEVER NEVER NEVER DRIVE WITH NO FUEL CAP!
  3. I had a Valeo clutch disintegrate when it was hardly worn, it had "made in france" stamped on it so it appears they make them everywhere.
  4. So as the O2 bit came from the air anyway, and most of the C bit on a diesel comes out as carbon (soot) then the CO2 output of a diesel must be less than the calculation says?
  5. I'm an engineer, not a chemist, so I want to ask. How does slightly under 1 Kilo of petrol emit more than a Kilo of CO2
  6. If it doesen't conform to construction and use then you are automatically not insured, so best not ram that prius off the road till you find out then!
  7. I used to run my S3 on regular unleaded for years with no ill effects, in fact I never put leaded in it as soon as unleaded became available. I never even had to adjust the tappets so there wasn't any valve seat problems.
  8. Mine is carbon neutral thanks to chip fat
  9. I have in the past used dome headed allen bolts, and hammered a ball bearing into the hole afterwards. Many toolkits from machinemart etc now have torx and security torx bits in them, and most pikeys will have stolen one of said toolkits by now.
  10. In a local case many years ago, the court decided that a vehicle is obstructing someones access may be moved enough to gain access but no further. You can use reasonable force to enter the vehicle but must not do unneccesary damage. The only reason that the defendant was fined, was because the vehicle had shopping in it and he emptied a jar of jam over the drivers seat.
  11. And dont put the drum brake back on. Fit an X-Brake, best bit of kit i've bought for years.
  12. I think the excise men would know what I am running on from the fact that it smells like a chippy!
  13. The quickest killer of Bosch pumps is ultra low sulpher diesel, as it has insufficient lubrication. Veg oil mixed with your diesel will solve this problem. First symptoms are the stop solenoid not working and being covered with swarf when you remove it. I am running on filtered WVO from the chippy with a electric/water heat exchanger to warm the oil. I havent yet tried 100% veg oil though, but so far it runs like a dream on about 50% and most of the diesel rattle has gone. I am trying more and more oil until I find the ideal mix, although with the heater it should run at 100%. We will see! The duty you pay is not dependant on whether you mix it or not, but on the quality of the fuel. If you can prove the cooking oil is of "diesel quality" has an ester content of not less than 96.5% by weight and sulpher content not more than 0.005% then it is bio diesel regardless of how thick it is or how you have refined it. If you cannot prove the quality then it is a "fuel substitute" and you pay the same duty as low sulpher diesel. Obviously the quality of used oil varies a lot. I had some from a hotel which was mostly fat and water, but my local chippy changes the oil every week, and it has so far proved to be very clean. I only filter the oil once after letting it stand for a week and draining off any water and fat from the bottom of my storage tank To keep it legal the paperwork is really easy. The guys that dip your tank at the side of the road can tell if you have any veg oil in your tank, so you must declare something each month. Also they can tell if you have heating oil in your tank and will throw the book at you!
  14. I was once sitting in an empty inside lane of the M25 doing the same speed as the other two lanes, about 40 MPH with a traffic car next to me in the middle lane. As I was thinking "better not overtake on the inside" the passenger in the police car waved for me to pass on the inside, so I did.
  15. Dammit, I filled up today. Oh thats allright, I got mine from the chipshop, and they aren't mentioned.
  16. I have also made an official complaint to the BBC about the way they describe 4x4 vehicles. Tomorrow I will drive something the same length as a Mondeo estate, but slightly narrower. It will last 4 times longer. It carries twice as many people. It is easier to recycle. It runs on chip fat. Yes I drive a "polluting 4x4" 110 county
  17. Apparently a Jeep Wrangler is 60% cleaner than a Prius over it's whole life! I voted for hybrids.
  18. Stihl make 3 different ranges of chainsaw. They make excellent proffessional "expensive" saws. They make average farmer range saws. They also make utter cr** cheap saws but still charge "stihl" money for them. Only sell because of the name. I mend them for a living, and I would say if you are buying an expensive stihl, you won't go far wrong. But if you want a cheaper saw, with good spares availability and excellent reliability try the Tanaka range. Above all GET THE SAFETY GEAR AND GET TRAINED.
  19. Cunifer is (was) a trade name, I havent seen it for some time now. You used to be able to get copper/nickel alloy pipe in larger sizes for fuel pipes etc as I used it on several kit cars in the past. I dont know where to get it now though. Cunifer will not work harden and will easily outlast the car, it is also much tougher than copper so it's harder to bend neatly. I don't like small bore pure copper pipe on a vehicle, I have seen it fracture even when attached to a chassis to stop it vibrating.
  20. Another possibility is that when the cambelt was last changed, the injector timing is not quite right? Also I could not increase the boost very much with my snorkel connected, so I cut a hole and fitted a large gate valve to the air filter housing to increase air flow for road use. It made a hell of a difference. The valve came from a local fishpond supplier.
  21. No, the one I fitted isn't a bleed valve, they are available everywhere (Halfrauds) and are cra*. Mine seals off the line to the actuator until the desired pressure is reached, it is far more accurate than the bleed type as it works on the actual pressure rather than being just a "controlled leak" Have you got enough fuel on full throttle, You need to be burning enough diesel to produce the boost in the first place. I didn't get full boost until I changed the fuel filter!
  22. I found shortening the rod on my 200tdi had no effect at all, and I have been told it can actually damage the wastegate. I fitted a boost controller which is much simpler to adjust once it's fitted as I believe this to be the "proper" way of doing things I got mine from www.armval.co.uk but it seems they are temporarily unavailable.
  23. Mine's been stuck on the front of the bonnet for years, never had a problem with mot's or anything.
