  1. I did say it was an insane idea and one that generated a very interesting discussion with varied opinions.

My starting point was is this possible which I think we have determined through discussion that it is.

Is it sensible? Given the trailers available to me the answer to that is probably no. We have discussed it and I probably need a flat bed trailer 6m long to even consider it. So this is either an excuse to buy a new trailer or to get someone in better equipped to do the job.

I find it is better to have a sensible discussion about something than to wonder forever if it is possible.

Not sure how you'd have a ton to play with unless your trailer is only 300kg which I can't see happening!

Container is 2.2 tonnes max but could be 1.8 tonnes

    Trailer is 0.7 tonnes

0.7 plus 1.8 is 2.5 trailer is 3.5 rated as is the Range Rover so I nave 1 left over. even at 2.2 tonnes I have 0.6 tonnes to play with.

In my experience containers are usually able to be delivered (and put where you want by the Hiab) as part of the sale at minimal if any extra cost - is there a reason that isn’t an option for you?

I live in Scotland and the thriftiness has worn off on me over the last 60 years lol. Also locating it on site will not be that simple.

Logs under is I think a bad idea as it's additional weight, will make it taller and potentially unstable, you can always jack it up when you get to location.

    Mike

If the container is 2.2 tonnes with the additional weight of the trailer I should still have nearly a tonne to play with. The logs would also help with the unloading and allow be to centre the load on the axle as I would have 1/2 metre either end.

We usu. put the Tara weight of a 20" ctr. on 2.200 kgs.

Width varies between 240 and 250 cm.,

What makes them awkward to transport on a flatbed trailer without "twistlocks" is securing them - you def. don't want them to move. Also, they don't like to be transported on their floors - they sit on their corners.. They tent to be a bit tail heavy - the doors are more metal.. Also, the police will want you to have mirrors that look rearwards alongside the container as required by law. We have used reverse camera's in the past but some LEA will not like that.

Have you got something to unload the thing ?

At this stage it is just toying with the idea as I have the ability to transport the weight and wondered why I have never seen it done.

The tying down issue is certainly something I had considered also aware of the mirror issue but think I have extending ones somewhere if not certainly have a camera maybe even able to use a venture cam.  Have measured the Ifor and if I pit the doors to the hitch it would balance the weight quite well.

Was thinking of putting the the container on logs for two reasons 1 to spread the load the other to assist rolling at the other end.

As I said insanity but worthy of a discussion even just to confirm my insanity.

  5. Am having more, potentially, insane thoughts.

Am thinking about buying a shipping container as I need one or two for a project. Sane so far.

A 20ft container weighs between 1.8 and 2.2 tonnes is only 2.4m wide so in theory is could be transported on a 3.5t Ifor or similar trailer. I have two trailers of this capacity an Ifor car transporter and a Bradley flat bed.

Has anyone done this, if so would they do it again and what are the likely problems other that the Police not liking the look of the load?

Your not the only one with tin worm pain

Old friend just called to see me and told me his 2011 Toyota hilux is getting scrapped, he was lucky his steering failed when he was going dead slow, on investigation mounting points on vehicle had rotted away and allowed steering rack to drop, while looking for the problem he also found most of the chassis steel hidden by the belly plate had rotted away, he is not a happy bunny...

    Regards Stephen

A freind of mine wanted to buy my Sport but wouldn't wait so went and bought a Highlux instead. Within one week the chassis had folded between the cab and the body. The eventually bought my Sport.

Gosh - you work fast! I have taken this long to just look at mine :)

Needs must. None of my other vehicles are running. I have two away getting work done, one is ready but cannot collect it because it still need a little work for the MOT and will need trailered home.

Am about 12hrs into it with another 4hrs to go to finish. Hopefully get it done this week. I need to get another car on the road though  as once it is MOT I have sold it to a freind.

What happens now? I don't know anything about RR metals but I presume a new subframe is not available. Will you need to source a suitable used one?

I had a couple of good ones amongst my pile of bits.

Have now got the replacement back in, not too bad a job once it is stripped down.

First the bare frame, then the diff, the left wishbones and hub as one unit then the right side.

Just the brakes and the exhaust to go back on so hopefully complete before the weekend.

I'm more shocked that people can get enthusiastic about Toyotas.

He has some rare cars. He's got about 4 70's Celica's three of which he is rebuilding and one which he is the second owner of with 55k on it and in original condition.

It is great to have a neighbour who is as mad about cars, whatever marque, as I am. The only thing that bothers him is people coming to his house for Range Rovers. He even chased off a freind of mine yesterday when he dropped off my Sport.

Ha! That's brilliant. I have to say after a previous mention of your rough location on the forum it didn't take long to find the stash of RR and RRS on google maps

It is a local landmark. If I want to give people directions to my house most locals already know it.🤨

  11. Got the subframe on the deck. Not out yet because the rain came on but this is how bad it is

For some reason the picture is upside down even tried to rotate the original file but still came in upside down. Maybe a mod could sort this.

Surely it ain't proper if it doesn't come in a plastic gallon jug that looks like it might've previously contained vital fluids for a tractor with a hand-written label stuck on it?

I once suggested this to management, as there was a railway property she'd have loved. Instant response!

    "No, far too cold!"

My wife moved to Scotland last year and loves the weather. Much better than her own country where today she was showing me pictures of ice on trees. While outside just now it is raining. As I have always said to her "we have 4 seasons, damp, wet, wetter and wettest and can get them all on the same day"

I always avoid Jocklandshire cars, and cars for Derbyshire (more grit than any other county), coastal areas, liverpool/manchester, east of england and south wales

Everywhere is a costal area!! The furthest you can get from the sea in the UK is 75 miles.

  15. A 2000 vehicle is 24 years old and will probably have in excedd of 150k on the clock. When "I was a lad" (that makes me feel old LOL) you rarely saw a car with ver 100k on the clock and were usually rotten by 10 year old. Can we complain really?

My dad always bought Vauxhalls and after three years old they were prone to rust. I spent many weekends repairing the wings on my mothers Chevette

I have a 2007. I cannot beleive how bad they are for rust given the originlal purchase price etc. You would think the components should have been much better quality. I'd love to move mine on but the arches need attention before i can do that now.

I also have a 2007 with 80k and it needs the inner and outer cills welded. Has just had a new front diff and a new front sub frame.

Has this truck been in the sea? Or is it a common issue?

It's a common problem in Scotland which is the reason I prefer to buy cars from the south.. I have two cars from London and both have very good sub frame so I am not short of a supply.

I never thought that it would literally pull the wheel off. I will update the photos once I have dropped the frame as I'm sure it will look horrendous.

  18. I have a failed front cross over valve so stripped one off a spares car. Under the front wheel arch cover on a 2003 car.

I tought this will be a 5 minute job to replace on my late 2005 car. Got the car up and stripped back the cover to find two piped disappearing into the bodywork. No valve.

Does anybody know where the valve is likely to be located?

Could it be a sensor giving a wrong signal? I remember a D2 with a similar problem, TC activating when driving off, until the error would come up. Disconnecting that one sensor made the car drivable until I could fit a new sensor.

It make sense for the TC to be linked to the EAC and the ABS so one sensor could throw things off.

  20. Long story short.

Bought an L322 needing a diff which I replaced twice as I forgot to put oil in the first one DOH! took it on the road and blew the OSF driveshaft then fitted a replacement which is now operational.

At some point the suspension has lowered and come up with the suspension inactive message. The suspension I fee is down at the access level and is a little bouncy on the road.

The crux of the matter is associated with the ABS which I suspect could be because the suspension is too low. When I pull away the traction control fight me accelerating for a while untile the HDC inactive message come up. I cannot find anythis in the codes that would indicated a problem with the ABS or the EAS so really struggling to get to the bottom of this.

I have disconnected the ABS which allows me to use the car.
