  1. Thanks LR90 and Yes Jim we had thught about that and it is an option. I am going to see JE in the UK next week so I will keep you updated. I intend to do a photo diary as well so I will send the link as and when. Iam driving the TD4 from Spain next week so hopefully no gremlins will appear. Hasta Luego Amigos
  2. Hi All After the disasterous TD5 90 experience not put off I am venturing again into the Land Rover world. New vehicle for Er Indoors sorry Dear Lady Wife ( who is as nutty about Land Rovers as I was errr am!) a 2003 Freelander Kalahari, okay so this is going to be the new "play" vehicle and we have plans to do a bit of tinkering here tee hee. JE Engoineering or Jeremy Fearn are topping the list of possibles at the moment................Any advices gratefully received. Will be fitting off road kit snorkel etc... as starters and then looking at performance, lift, tyres and then just normal totally unecessary bits n bobs... Yep and I have been blessed with a budget for a new car and the new Freelander 2 has won the criteria and requirements checklists. 5 doors comfy 4x4 cross field ability all weathers, etc, etc... Decided on XS spec with a couple of extras... So any help on quickly installed and removed peformance chips that do not leave an "imprint" in the onboard computer etc... So I do get to play a little so long as it remains in warranty. Any cosmetic asserories are okay that can be removed etc... Speak to all soon Cheers TD5Spain
  3. Hi All, remember me and the trials and tribulations of my 1999 TD5 with a 2002 engine smoking etc etc... Well we have now parted company having suffered almost irrepairable damage to my love of the Land Rover. Anyway the LR has been sold to an unsuspecting self appointed LR expert who thinks he can tame the beast and cure the latest batch of problems. Just so you know TD5 engines and management systems are not:- Suitable for a lot of dusty conditions (refer to small print in owners manual) Suitable for deep wading or sticky muddy conditions (refer to smaller print in owners handbook) Possible to repair unless in a multi million pound franchise dealership Reliable to go anywhere solo!!!! Designed to run without any of their sensors, so why put them in stupid places and not waterproof them ie throttle potentionemeter, which will stop functioning if dusty damp wet or goes over bumps too fast! Used too often slightyly offset or not bolted down with exactly the right torque! MY has had 3 replacements.... I think I drove it with muddy boots once ! ECU compatible ie it is placed in a leaky "metal container" which willingly lets water in but not out! Yes i did try to seal it, and no I did not want it on the roof. etc etc getting bored now. I bought the LR because I need to access the mountains and Countryside around the inland Costa BLanca, so it was well set up; lifted, intercooler uprated, EGR finally blanked, snorkel, peformance air filter, etc etc.... Anyway that has vented my frustration with how LR apparently make a fantastic engine ie the TD5 Storm then run it with sinclair C5 electrics and sensors? I am now saving up for another 4x4 not sure what yet, lost a few grand on the TD5, but may even look at a new one with the FORD ENGINE IN IT. Thanks for all the help originally with the problems and I will be back. Hasta Luego TD5Spain
  4. WWWHHHHHHOOOOPPPPPEEEEEEE! Guess what yes I have picke d up my TD5 today and it has "no" smoke and goes like the train it used to! Okay so what have they done, or not done as the case may be. Apart from all the work that has previously been done, as posted in this post, the final set of work has comprised:- 3 new injectors... Injector wiring loom...again New Turbo, full assembly... 1 new pipe!... New EGR assembly... New Flywheel sensor...SEcond one New MAF... Second one New throttle potentiometer... second one BUT still this did not work...... They then turned their attention to the ECU ah ha! They first of all said they "swapped" the ECU with another and this still had issues, although I dont believe they actually did this. Then I reminded them again that the engine was not original and still under warranty.......oh they said and started to look more closely at the existing ECU not matching up to the engine??????? THANKS IAN IT WAS YOUR POST THAT MADE ME PLANT THE SEED RE THIS. Anyway they traced the "faults" to the ECU and the relationship to the injectors coding etc... etc... and the fuelling. Before they had just believd the ECU was okay and the faults it was reporting. They tell me that they "remapped" and reprogrammed the ECU engine management system ( there may be some discrepancy in translation here so sorry) and hey presto all back together and it works. and work it does...yipppeeee. It basically came down to the ability of the mechanic who reads and understands the fault codes etc... and them listening to what they were told in the first place...As I read today the ECU can think everything is okay eventhough the sensors are not operating properly and it fuels etc... accordingly. So until the LR garage had the car I had spent over 400€ and then 200€ + on the diagnostics test etc... They have had the TD5 for over 3 weeks and done shed loads of work on it, I was dreading the bill. The turbo. injectors, wiring loom, MAF etc.... plus the labour and the umpteen diagnostic tests they have done. Are you sitting down here is the final bill from the LR garage............................NIL absolutely zilch... no charge...zero and they even smiled about it. The workshop manager explained in his bestest english that the warranty would cover the work as the original engine replacement ( Landrover) and re set up of the car "had not been done correctly" and the engine warranty would cover the costs........... I did not push the fact I had already spent over 600€ on it and been without a vehicle for over 3 weeks. Restored my faith it what was becoming a very very stressful episode so thankyou to all on here who have supported me with ideas and good wishes. Now I can start planning the addition of more "toys" Thanks again TD5Spain
  5. Not being an expert but knowing quite alot about all the sensors on a TD5 from ongoing experience (see TD5 Misfire posts) the 2 sensors inside the MAF are very very delicate and brittle when used so if you touch them they will break. I was advised first off to spray them with electrical contact cleaner as they get an oily build up which stops them sensing properly, then try again, I could not find anything else to play with so I ended up buying new one, but if you can wait a couple of days I will hunt out the old one and "dissect" it and see if there is anything I missed. I will try and post some pics also. Let me know Regards TD5Spain
  6. Can you believe it is now over 3weeks, lost count really. IT has been with the LR dealership and they have yet to sort the problem! They have replaced turbo, injectors and everything elso they "say", but it is still problematic... The latest is they are swapping the ECU over to see if this is the problem, but they are talking over 3,000€ for a replacement is this a normal price do you think £2000!!!!!!!!!!!!! I and they are at a loss I have arranged to speak to them again tomorrow to get an update to be honest I get the feeling they are giving up! I would like to spend soem time with the mechanic but this seems impossible, although only my first TD5 I have had over 20 Land Rovers in various guises. I have sent an email to LR in the UK but they have not responded and I have also tried to call but none has returned my calls. I have an issue with the costs as the engine is under warranty and why should I pay for all the things they have done so far if they have not fixed the problem.... worth a discussion anyway. I will keep you up to date. Thanks for the interest James TD5Spain....... Craig
  7. Hi I am inland between Alicante and Valencia so no not down south much. The trouble is I am either torn between Alicante, Benidorm YUCH, or Valencia LR garages as these are the nearest options. I have been recommended a decent garage in Barcelona but that is about 5 hours away! or a 1000€ grua ride (sorry breakdown truck). If it had been runable long distance I would have driven it back to the UK via the ferry I am that disallusioned over here with the sham of LR Concessionaires. Cheers TD5Spain
  8. I had to leave it in the hands of Landrover in the end no other option here...... If anyone is still interested the garage still have my Defender which now makes it over 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!! They say they have "repaired" the turbo, sounds worrying....... and they have now replaced 3x injectors ( incl wiring loom), flushed out the tank and supply and return lines, and "tested" the pump, but guess what thye say it is still smoking and similar problems as before. The head has been pressure tested and every sensor tested cleaned and or replaced, etc etc....... There are apparently some "experts" coming across from Landrover? although I bet not specifically for my landy eh! I have an appointment at the garage next wedensday when they are going to discuss what to do! This doesn't sound good does it? Keep your fingers crossed for me Regards to all TD5Spain
  9. Well we get stopped here in Spain regularly by well armed Police and civil guard....When they set up road blocks they mean stop... There will be several vehicles at different angles to make vehicles entering the checkpoint slow down and several upto 20 officers will be positioned around at various vantage points... They are all heavily armed with both automatic weapons and side arms. They also have an answer to the UK "stinger" which a long multi pointed chain which literally shreds the tyres off the rims not slowly releases the air! It is quite disconcerting when you first see one but then you just accept them. I am not a warmonger and do not support conflict however I fully support all of our lads and girls on the ground because they are doing a fantastic job when most of them do not believe in the actions they are having to support. Anyway enough from me on this one. Cheers TD5Spain
  10. Thanks Jules Sorry to hear you have a similar issue. It has been a very expensive nightmare so far, and I have picked it up again from the LR Garage and "driven" it home to try and get the aprts from elsewhere and try and find mechanic qualified to repair it! it cost me 250€ just fro the diagnostic testing.....! I willkeep you all in touch and updated. Many Thanks all Cheers TD5Spain
  11. Thanks Andy I have just found out this info also and they say the reason is that each injector is coded with its measured resistance and this code has to be entered into the computer (ECU) for them to work properly...!!! Apparently if this hasn't been done and they are "new" to the engine this could be part of the problem as to why the ECU is throwing up fault codes on the injectors although I think unlikell in my case as they were replaced at the time of the new engine. Cheers TD5Spain
  12. Okay here is the wisdom from Land Rover They have carried out a thorough diagnostic systems check etc..... and they have come up with the following:- Turbo Compressor is not working correctly............New one 1600€ (approx £1200) plus VAT 16% 3 x injectors are blocked or not working properly...New one 400€ EACH 1200€ (approx £800) plus VAT 16% Labour etc......... between 8 and 12 hours?????? @ 50€ say 10 = 500€ (approx £330) plus VAT 16% So that is 3300€ OVER £2300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And guess what none of this is warranty work even though the engine is under warranty still? Any ideas anyone? They say the injectors are special tools and set up and NOT DIY even by a non LR Mechanic? I am going to p[rice the parts up in the UK any suggestions please? What about the Turbo Compressor is this easily changeable? and is it not servicable? Cheers TD5Spain
  13. Diolch yn fawr Gwyn (thankyou in Welsh) I will speak with the garage tomorrow morning as no news today!!!! iechyd da ( "Cheers" ) in welsh! Said yakidarin english! TD5
  14. So funny ..... Thanks for making my day I had forgotten what the system was like in the UK having been away for a while....LOL Looks like you will all need to stay in bed then... but keep moving about to stop bed sores..... CHerrs TD5Spain
  15. I wish! They have now had the Landy for over 2 days and they are still going ummm arrrr. It is the same in spanish! Tee Hee.... Basically they have been through and "apparently" checked allthe items I had already done! and now they say they are going to recheck it on the computer, but there are no faults being thrown out? They the ECU is ok....Thank goodness and that the wiring harnesses appear okay, but they are baffled... When I cam to start it up on MOnday to take to the garage it was a real bitch to get going, it started first time but then proceeded to cough and splutter and spew out loads of "white" smoke, once it cleared it was back to the same black smoke and power problems. I thought this must be the head gasket....... but they say they didn't think so as there is no water in the oil, fumes in the coolant?????, condensation or gunbe in the oil filler cap, or the other normal pointers to a head gone. They have said it may be the injectors but are doing a thorough test... I am remortgaging to pay the bill!!! Some good news though the re[placement engine was actually fitted in march 2005 so they have said any warranty work will be covered.... That was a surprise! I will keep you informed when I hear later today...I hope Cheers TD5Spain
  16. Yes I did and they seem fine thanks, funny thing is when sitting still it willl rev full on! I have really run out of time and patience. I have a niggling thought that the Throttle Potentiometer is problematic even though I have my mates on at the moment. It just doesn't make sense....... When I gently rev even on load it reacts differently it is as if it is accelerator led! So this I think points to the TP or the high pressure system of the pump. But as I say no more time or energy to spend on it. Thanks again and I will keep you informed. Cheers TD5Spain
  17. I GIVE UP I HAVE STOPPED SHORT OF DROPPING THE TANK AND CHECKING THE PUMP SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED NEEDS SOME ATTENTION!!!! SO I HOPE THIS IS THE CAUSE WHEN IT GOES TO LANDROVER TOMORROW OR TUESDAY WHENEVER THEY CAN FIT ME IN I WILL OF COURSE UPDATE YOU ALL WHEN I GET THE NEWS IF THE BANK ACCOUNT STRETCHES THAT FAR FINGERS CROSSED BY ALL PLEASE THANKS AGAIN Cheers TD5Spain
  18. Hi If you send me what exactly you are looking for I will try and get the reference numbers from the website for you so can order on line if this helps. If not Imay be able to source them locally here and send you the details of how to order. Here are a couple of books to source if possible:- GUIA DE CAMINOS NATURALES EN ESPAÑA Follow this link to a whole list of routes and excursions organised in spain by 4x4 http://4x4.coches.net/revista/Rutas-4x4/Rutas-4x4.aspx or this one...... http://www.telebase.es/sportauto/ I am afraid there is nothing in English at the moment but I will keep looking. With maps they are not very good in spain as there is no equivalent to the UK style os map, there arelots of road maps by Michelin etc... but there are " blue maps" which are detailled a sthey come but they are expensive and only cover small areas. I think they are still controlled by the military. These are called MOPU Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Urbanismo, the Instituto Geografico Nacional. These are 1:25.000 and have most roads and tracks on. Normal road maps WILL NOT have the required details for 4x4 routes, following tracks blindly on the Continent is not recommended. AS for the rules and regs most of them are in the back of the "104 rutas de espana by toyota", but the local tourist information have the details also. Any permits will need to be obtained from the Policia Local. Happy 4x4ing.. Cheers TD5Spain
  19. Okay I am back looking at the problems but to cl;arify the white smoke is only when started up then it clears to black smoke when the accel is pressed, the thing is it doesn't smoke constantly,if i depress the accel slowly it appears ok but when I floor it or rev quickley then the smkoe appears. The engine is still juddering/ lacking power/ misfiring however I can describe it when under load......... This is really becoming problematic so anyway todays tasks are: Check fuel regulator...... Drop tank and remove the pump and see what I have there! Failing this I have run out of ideas and will have to succomb to the useless LR garages here and let them loose on it! I will update later today re the results and what else I have done Thanks Again Cheers TD5Spain
  20. Okay I am going out too have alook at Rugby half time..... Sorry about the Hail it is glorious here and very warm for January I'll try and send some over! Will let you know. Cheers TD5Spain
  21. I knew there was one missing from my to do list..... Where is it situated ????? Cheers TD5Spain
  22. Okay update.................... MAF airflow meter changed for new one.............okay fuel filter changed and new one chekced and .....okay throttle potentiometer ......................................okay ECU plugs .......................................................okay flywheel sensor ................................................okay fuel in tank.......................................................okay EGR cleaned and sensors plug ...........................okay--------- I WILL be blanking this off. vacumn actuator on top of turbo cleaned.............okay air filter new.....................................................okay injector wiring loom...........................................okay All vacumn hoses blown through.........................okay All visisble sensor leads cleaned and replaced......okay Oil clean and coolant clean (not head gasket!)......okay So all that is left is the tyre pressures!!!!!!!! NO seriously the only thing I have not done is the Fuel Pump ........ How do I get to it and remove it to clean and replace if necessary....? THE BILL IS ADDING UP Thanks for all your help up till now everyone. Cheers TD5Spain
  23. Hi yes we have had days of fun with the 104 rutas de espana and there are several others... although they are all in spanish but with road books and fairly easy to follow. The only problem can be in the little villages where there are no sign posts and very very narrow streets which you struggle to navigate in 110s, Discos etc... I will have alook this weekend for you and post a list etc here.... But dont just look at the pyrenees there are loads of mountain ranges in Spain especially the granadas, you can travel for literally hours even an hour from the coast and have great off road fun. Teruel is fantastic, just inland from Valencia and the Sierra bernias inland from Alicante, fun in the Navarra region is second to none and there a a couple of off road safari tour centres there also, etc...etc... Have fun Cheers TD5Spain
  24. Okay so I have now checked and cleaned the ECU plugs and tried the "new" air folow meter disconnected and basically ben through the majority of the system and cleaned contacts etc etc... Okay there is a plug connector on the engine side of the inlet manifold...What Is it do you know?......I took it out and cleaned it, it was well sooted up but what should it look like? mine has one "prong" and a hole to a "sensor, it looks to me like there is piece missing! Anyway how is it running...... still missing on high revs and smoking badly.. white smoke that smells like parafin! and then black smoke and boy can it smoke.... it pulls really well from start off and then judders as the speed and revs increase. When it starts cold it is sluggish and lethargic to say the least but if I rev it, it clears and starts as above. IT starts easily from cold or hot. I have contacted local LR dealer and they just say they will look at it min 2 hours €100........ Local Auto diesel centre just went oooohhhhhh oooooohhhhh difficult these you know...Yes I bloody well know that. I was recommended a local repair centre but when I spoke to them they knew very little about TD5's having only ever worked on Santanas. Before I give up and leave it to the hands of the unclean I hope someone has some more ideas please...? I am quite good normally, but thois has flumaxed me. Cheers TD5Spain
