That's the correct seal, if you look closely at cross section drawing you can see the open side of the seal goes in first, so flat face towards needle bearing.

From my RAVE manual :
Clean stub axle and drive shaft and fit hub assembly to axle
Fit spacing washer
Fit hub adjusting nut. Tighten to 50Nm. Ensure hub is free to rotate with no bearing play
Back off adjusting nut 90 degrees and tighten to 10Nm
Fit a new lock washer
Fit locknut. Tighten to 50Nm
Tab over lock washer to secure adjusting nut and locknut
Fit a new gasket to driving member and fit to hub. Tighten bolts to 65Nm.
Nothing about using a dti for this. ??
It then goes on to describe setting drive shaft end float, using a dti, which is attatched to the hub for this purpose.
Are you getting confused with using the dti for checking drive shaft end float. Land Rover manual makes no mention of dti for setting hub bearings. As mmgemini said dti not needed.
Have you looked here. http://www.camskill.co.uk/m64b464s234p0/SUV_Tyres_-_4x4_Tyres_-_All_Terrain_Tyres_-_Off_Road_Tyres_-_16_inch_Kumho_Tyres_SUV_4x4_Kumho_KL71_Kumho_KL_71_-_R16_inch_-_235_85_16_235_85R16
Had dealings with them in the past with no problems

You did change the release bearing? Is it the right one and correctly located in the arm, is the spigot bearing in the crank ok, nothing in there that shouldn't be.
